I liked it better for how open Sunshine was, its hub world was incredible, while Galaxy's was virtually non existent. I also liked that they made a decent, though very simple, story for a Mario game, where as Galaxy just didn't even bother. On the other hand, Sunshine had some horrible camera bugs and its level design feels lazy in comparison to Galaxy's.meetroid8
I agree, I don't like all the small planets in galaxy, while it has nice designs they just don't do it for me! I thought sunshine was fun and different with the water spraying.

It was okay. Just the worst of the 3D Mario Platformers and an example of why there shouldn't be fully voiced dialog in Mario games.

I liked it alot and loved the way you had to figure out what to do unlike Galaxy holds your hand the whole way.

mario 64 was better than both of them

dingo1339
^full of win. but in all honesty galaxy 2 was by far the most difficult of them all(considering all 242 stars) Mario 64 is without a doubt the best one but personally mario galaxy 1 comes in 2nd, super mario sunshine in 3rd, and galaxy 2 in 4th. Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and galaxy all were they're own individual, unique games. As to where Galaxy 2 was just an expansion of Galaxy 1. It didn't deliver the same experience as the 1st galaxy. You didn't get the excitement of the physics as you did the first time around. It just didn't have the same effect 2 1/2 years later. As for plot Sunshine's story was my favorite. Though it wasn't clever or the creme of the crop it was good for a Mario game, At least it tried. I love them all though and they all easily deserve a 9(except for super mario 64 which deserves nothing less than a 10 :) )

The levels were lacking in Sunshine when compared to the amazing design of Galaxy.

I really liked Sunshine. I'd say the big 3D (or 4) Mario Games are a tough choice for a favorite

I absolutely loved Sunshine, but I think both Galaxies are far better in my opinion.

Maybe it's just me, but I find Mario games to work best when they're simple, limited in terms of where you can go and all action-focused:

start the level, try to reach the end, maybe re-enter it at a later time to find a hidden treasure, and that's it.

That's what you get in the 2D Marios, but the more free-roaming style of both Mario 64 and Sunshine is better suited

to the RPG Mario games, IMHO, not the action ones.

It's like they tried to do too much: it's a Mario game, it's supposed to be simple, it's not Zelda!

Nintendo did the right move to bring the focus back on the action with Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros, I think.

Nintendo never stopped focusing on the simple platforming game concept that first delivered Mario, they just decided to make the series a little more diverse, with Paper Mario. Imagine if they only stuck to platforming and never came up with Mario Kart, what a great game we'd be missing!

I was weird for not liking SM64. Sunshine droped off the map for me as Gamecube was the only nintendo system I skipped out on and it seemed the same for my circle of friends. I'm weird again it seems for strongly disliking SMG. Out of them all the only one I could find any enjoyment out of was SMG2 but it still wasn't enough for me to continue on past 20%.

I don't find personally those 3d mario games to be "platforming" but more of a an adventure type game in which case I like playing games like Zelda and Okami. The linearness in the 3d mario games just eats away at my soul.

I haven't completed SMG2 yet, but I think Sunshine had the perfect atmosphere. All the levels were awesome, and designed perfectly. A very hard game, and the atmosphere is what I loved so much. All I ask for in a game is a good atmosphere, and Galaxy 2 kind of...failed. D:

I replayed it last year and loved about 40 stars of it. Every level has one, usually two red coin hunts. Additionally all "secret" levels have a red coin hunt. Also each level had a "race" star which was really straightforward. And then there's ALL those blue coins. Too much collecting overall, I like some collecting but would appreciate more actual objectives. Also the last level was unbelievably lame. I still love the game but it has a lot of flaws.

I love mario but sunshine was one of the most boring games I had ever played. I went from being excited, then disapointed to boring to hating this game very quickly. I had to force myself to play this to 40 stars until I just turned off at how unfun this game was.

Mario 64 > Galaxy's 1 and 2 > sunshine.

Mario 64 wins just because the impact and overal design and feeling of the game was better then galaxy's. The galaxy's were good if not just as good but it just didnt have too many memorable areas and such. Also the planetoid idea was good but got repetative.

Sunshine was a good game, but not better than Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2. I liked the tropical environments, a few of the boss battles, and the platforming levels that took place in an alternate dimension, but those blue coins were annoying to find. The only improvement it had over SMG was the hub world, but that's about it. I would like to play it again sometime, though, because it's been a year or two since I last played it.

Sunshine was a helluva lot harder than Galaxy that's for sure. I haven't gotten far into Galaxy 2 to comment on that.

They were both very good and very different. Not really sure which I liked more.

No its not. Mario Galaxy series is the 3d Mario game that I always wanted. And not a Action/Adventure like Sunshine and Mario 64.

To me, Galaxy 1&2 were way too linear. To get the star in most areas, all you had to do was follow a set path. It lead you right to the star. In Sunshine, you actually had to move around a decent sized area to get to the objective and then figure out how to do that objective. Sunshine was much harder, and a much better game than Galaxy 1&2 in my opinion.

I thought that Super Mario Sunshine was tons better than Galaxy...and maybe a bit better than Galaxy 2.
I didn't mind the blue coins at all, and I think that's why a lot of people disliked it.
I think the levels were always really fun and had the perfect challenge to all of them.
On the other hand Galaxy 1 & 2 were really easy IMO

wiicube64

talk about repetitive topics...

personally i liked the galaxies a bit more than sunshine. but im not saying sunshine was a bad game, it wa prett good.

Sunshine Pro's

1. Open hub world

2. Bigger open areas

3. Obstacle course levels

Sunhine Con's

1. FLUDD

2. Tropical theme gets old quick

3. Boss battles

Galaxy (1/2) Pro's

1. Excellent level design

2. Huge variety

3. Does virtually everything right. There really isn't a bad level.

Galaxy (1/2) Con's

1. Big area levels are lacking

2. No TRUE hub world to explore.

That said, Galaxy is undoubtedly the better game.

Sunshine and Super Mario Bros 2 is the worst Mario games (in the main series). Galaxy and SMB3 is the best

I think this pretty much sums up why some people didn't enjoy the Galaxy games. They're just too linear.

Every Mario game before Mario 64 where linear. I guess people where expecting the Galaxy games to be a lot like Marioi 64 instead of a 2d Mario platformer in 3d.

I liked FLUDD. I think it was a nice addition. Also enjoyed Sunshine more than Galaxy 1 & 2. Love the tropical setting, the hub (Delfino Island) and the game also felt much, much more rewarding (probably because it was quite hard).

I liked Sunshine, probably more than Galaxy 1, pretty even with Galaxy 2. Super Mario 64 is the best 3D mario.

The Galaxy maps are all very linear, the maps in Mario 64 was much more open could be explored and played in many different styles.

I'm just hoping that the next 3D mario is like that, large classic Mushroom Kingdom worlds that lets you explore and play it the way you want to.
