Is anyone else upset with the new direction Metroid OTHER M is taking?

I loved Metroid Prime's unique gaming style and I feel like all Nintendo ever does is think:

" How can we make this game more appealing to other types of people and gamers?" And it ruins the whole thing.

FMV's are cool, but from the trailer the game looks very different than an exploring/adventure/scanning sh** game. Most people found that boring, but I loved having a game like that, and now the only one is gone D=

Anyone else feel the same?

I don't remember them saying at any point that they were making Other M appeal to everyone :O

They said it was taking Metroid more towards its roots, which is awesome.

From a story perespective, taking it to roots roots would be awesome, but from the trailer you can see that it looks like it's not in first person and it has a lot of sideview 2D environments, IOT their definition of taking it to its roots is making it half sidescroller.

BTW when I said making it appeal to more people I meant people who thought The Metroid Prime series was boring, with all the backtracking, puzzles, and tedious gameplay at times.

OTHER M looks very action-oriented and fast paced.

Im actually happy they are changing the style. this style isnt new. this perspective was how the original metroid was. it was changed to an FPS in the prime series. Its about time it reverted back to the original Metroid formula. The primes were good, but not as good as the originals

Do we even know what direction Metroid: Other M is taking?

I sure don't. We have, what, one single two- or three-minute trailer? Of course the trailer is going to have action in it; so did Metroid Prime, and that's what makes for an interesting trailer. People don't get hyped for a game by watching Samus scan stuff and then read text.

I guess it's all preference then, I hated old Metroid games then gave Prime a chance and have very much enjoyed the gameplay and the story of all 3 games and was hoping for a fourth, but who knows maybe it'll be great, we'll just have to wait and see

Sounds like someone is jumping the gun. Does change scare you? People *****ed about Metroid Prime because it departed from tradition too.

I'm glad they're refreshing the series again.

The Metroid Primes were awesome, some of my favorite games of all time in fact. But what more could they do with that first person perspective? 3 games was enough.

Now we can look forward to something new and different :)

I saw a lot more third person and first person in there than I did 2d, but maybe thats just me.

I actually think its the opposite. By having Team Ninja on board, they can capture the Western Audience that LOVE action, action, and gorgeous cutscenes. Just take a look at God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy, etc.

other mother m 2

Judging by these two screenshots it seems there will be first person and like 3D side scrolling which im not too sure about having both. I love the Metroid Prime series graphics and gamplay which was in first person; 3D side scrolling may not be too bad but i am curious as to how there could be both in this game. Also, the graphics seems more colourful, i liked the more realistic graphics of the metroid prime series. Whether or not this will be a good direction for the metroid series is unknown as there has been little information released about the game.

No, opposite of the opposite lol

Japan was the place that made Super Metroid a hit

What did Nintendo do to reward their support? Turned it into a FPS and the Japanese audience left in droves, good ol' fashioned slap in their faces

The Wii is doing badly in Japan and part of their plan is to bring back a noteworthy franchise to the genre Japan wants

A better question would be if anyone is upset that Nintendo and Team Ninja are so blatantly trying to dethrone SMG as Wii Graphics King.

Honestly if Nintendo believes that Team Ninja is going to do a good job with the Metroid series then we should at least wait to see more gameplay before we start to judge. Not much has been shown and Team Ninja has donea great job with its other games so we just need to wait to see. It might be a great hit.

I was coming in to say the same thing, also from that trailer it would appear that Other M is taking an old direction to be more like Super Metroid. Any all Metroid trailers show action like Gabu said, your not going to show a Zelda trailer of Link doing a block puzzle, you show him during action segments.

I liked Prime 1 and 3 better than all of the other metroid games too, so thats just his opinion. Other M seems like it will be heavily influenced by fusion, so I expect more of a story.

I am not sure what type of direction this game is taking and so I am simply happy that we are getting a new Metroid game in general! Of all of the new games announced at this years E3 (on any console, but not hand helds. Golden Sun made me giddy with surprise.) Metroid: Other M was the one that actually excited me.

The only thing that upsets me about Other M is that it isn't released already and at my house, and in my Wii with me playing it insesently and taking a week off of work to do so. Curse that game! ;P

By direction i believe he means the gameplay perspective. Like going from first person to a third person sidescroller. in actuality it was TP-->FP-->TP again. Either way. i liked all the metroid games. My favorite Metroid was Super Metroid, and my favorite prime game was prime 1.

Some fresh air won't hurt. Aside that I think the important things in Metroid series are the atmosphere and the somewhat slow pace of the game progress. Be it in 2D or 3D, it really doesn't matter.

I own Ninja Gaiden DS and I believe Team Ninja will do an awesome job.

Umm.... you do know that Metroid has always had low sales in Japan compared to the west, right? The only reason Metroid has stuck around is because of the huge following it had outside of Japan...

The reason they went with first person is because they had no idea how to update Metroid for the 3D generation, so they outsourced it to a little Texas developer who had a vision. That vision has run it's course, so now they are teaming up with another developer with a different vision.

I'm upset that Nintendo didn't hand off that style of gameplay to another forgotten franchise like Kid Icarus. The Metroid franchise already establised itself with the 1st-person-shooter Prime series, and Other M appears to be overdoing it.

Team Ninja + Fusion Team + Series Director Yoshio Sakamoto ... who has worked on every Metroid title but Metroid II - He supervised over the Retro games. So yeah, its in good hands.

Also the Metroid series needs to evolve from what it already was. The Prime series was good, but the 2D Metroid titles are far better. The best thing the Prime games did was create an amazing atmosphere.

With Team Ninja working on the game, they can make the game more story heavy and have more action.

I actually like this, another Metroid Prime game would be too much. It's a great trilogy but it's time Metroid tries something new again and it'll probably be awesome. I just hope a new sidescrolling Metroid comes to DS.

Don't worry. Yoshio Sakamoto and the guys behind Fuison are assisting Team Ninja. I don't think Samus'sother daddy (Gunpei Yokoi was the other one) will trick away from the form of a Metroid game. The game looks sweet and I want to see Samus in a space bikini :P Which never seems to happen in 3D

I am happy with what I saw but I am not sure if I can tell the direction it is taking based on a three-minute trailer. But do you really think Team Ninja will produce a game that will appeal to everyone? I don't think that will happen.

nope....nice to see a change in direction (or a change back to the origonal direction if you will). my only concern is that team ninja will just make it an all out action romp.....and that would be bad. but if they can get the right mix of exploration, puzzels, action and kick a** bosses with an interesting mix of powerups then it should be another cracker in the metroid series.

It looks awesome and I don't even know how I will be controlling it or playing it. I like the idea of 2D, I like the idea of more 3D... all I know is the teaser did its job and I'm hooked waiting for more info.

Actually, I'm glad with the new direction Metroid is taking. The Prime Trilogy was good and all, but I think people are ready for a change to the Metroid series. My only concern, like the guy a couple posts above me said, is that Tam Ninja would turn Metroid into an action frenzy and destroy the exploration aspect the series is known for. Then again, all I saw was a 3-minute trailer, and trailers are supposed to look fun and exciting, so action is the main focus in the trialer. Since I know that it actually won't be action, action, and more action, I'm reassured that Team Ninja and Nintendo will not dissapoint.:)

I love the idea of physical combat. Let's hope the days of someone simply touching Samus's armor and doing damage are over for good.

in the trailer Samus's HUD said 03 2010

anyone else think thats a potential release date? I hope so. But then it would go HEAD TO HEAD with God of War 3. So maybe not a wise move.

i hope to have this beautiful looking mash up of 3D side scrolling and first person shooting in mah handz asap
