Normally, machines turn off when the battery dies, but mine stays on with the screens black and the red light still flashing. I have to hold down the power button for several seconds to get it to turn off, and then it takes a bit for it to start up after it's charged. I'm not concerned about it, because it just means I need to put it in the charger sooner instead of playing all the way to the end, but I'm just trying to see if it's a common occurance.

I've never let mine get that low. It was probably just conserving power so it would start up quickly once you got it plugged it.

Can't really help you out there, I've never had my battery drain.

Though, that is weird for it to just freeze instead of just turn off. I know my DSi used to just shut off when it was low.

It might be going into sleep mode to preserve what little power it has left. Would be quite useful if it died midway through a game because you've got a chance to plug in the charger and save it, if you hadn't done so already!

That doesn't happen. When it first did that, I thought that's what it was doing, like when the PSP shuts it self off. The PSP gives you like 10 minutes or so to plug it into t he charger before it completely turns off, but the 3DS doesn't seem to come back on even after you let it charge once it powers the screens off.

Mine actually did that just this morning. It sucked because I was definitely in the middle of a mission on Ghost Recon.

i think it's a "device", for the lack of a better word, to keep you from losing unsaved game data.
