In the last issue of Nintendo Power there is an interview with Zelda Director Eiji Aonuma.

In it he says he never considered VA and he doesn't like the idea. Also he mention having the NPC talk and not link as a horrible idea.

He also says ther art $tyle was choosen becauses it shows off Link's sword moves very well.

Confirms Zelda in the game but no anwser on Ganondorf

The tea table has not been upended

No flying like Pit

I'm not sure how to site this so I'll just let you guys/gals check yourselves. Those aren't his words there paraphrased cause I didn't think it was allowed due to NP being a print media

I'm super happy because any voices at all would ruin the world zelda creates

Ugh, Nintendo has to keep up with the times. An action adventure game like Zelda definitely should have voice acting, it'd make it a lot more atmospheric.

1.- Play the CDi games. 2.- Return (if you can and dare) and 3.- Tell me if it's a good idea to have VA in Zelda.

Yeah, if they implemented voice acting in Zelda it would be exactly like the CDi games.

Even if there were good voices, it would just feel awkward in a Zelda game. I hope the Zelda that releases in 15 years doesn't have voice acting either.

It makes no sense how people always bring up the CDi games whenever dealing with VA in Zelda. Yes, the voices were horrible, but the cutscenes were animated by Russians who didn't know English. I'm sure Nintendo is competent enough to find good voice actors that would work for the Zelda franchise.

I never liked the idea of having voices in a Zelda game because I like to have an imaginary voice in my mind while reading the text.. Same goes with Final Fantasy 1-9.

But voices would really ruin the game. Zelda is all about the adventure being yours, and doing it your way.

Who says you can't have it your way with voice acting? Games like Oblivion and Mass Effect have had that 'doing it your way' gameplay with plenty of voice acting. Honestly, there is no reason for there to be no voice acting.

How would that ruin the game? There are so many other RPGs,Action Adventure, Adventure titles where "the adventure is all about being yours" and have VA and that hurt hurt those titles one bit.

Well this is kind of sad news. And I don;t mean that in the end that there isn;t voice acting in the game (although I certainly would like it). But the mere fact that he says he never considred it? Or that even just NPCs talking is a "horrible idea"....just wowo. I love Anouma but damn.....that is just dreadful to hear. I have no idea why that is but I feel it's a shame to have that outdated approach. Especially for a 2011 game. I have no doubt Skyward Sword will be amazing, but this is one small but integral thing that needs to be fixed soon. Imo.

I'm completely unimpressed with this game. Not that voice acting would have changed a whole lot, but to me would be a step forward. This seems like the same old Zelda only with motion controls. To me that is not much of an evolution at all. Also, what is he talking about? Link never talks. The NPC characters talk to Link, and Link never talks. See, its already happening, but in text form.

well he's right. having half the cast talking and the main character being a retarded dude that can only moan would be ridiculous. and he probably doesn't like voice acting for the same reasons i don't (at least not in games where you can skip text). the artstyIe thing i already knew (since you have to be accurate, it would be hard to notice the patterns in a more realistic look, so they went with colorful cel shading) i don't get the tea table thingy and it's OBVIOUS link wouldn't fly... did anyone really think he'd grow wings?

Fine by me, I don't care about voice acting in Zelda games. In a way text without voice acting really works with Zelda adventures, and has become traditional of the 3D games. I think's fine the way it is, having some NPC's have grunts or screams or whatever, and having Link remain silent. Link has always been the silent protagonist and to have him speak would ruin that.

And who thought Link was going to fly like Pit?

I point you to FO3, where every single person in the game talks except for your character, you don't utter a sound, not even a grunt or moan. Often people's excuses for why voice acting wouldn't work are often inconsequential or unrealistic. I don't thing its necessary for the game to "get with the times" something your going to hear a whole lot of over the next few months and in reviews. Not having VA doesn't matter to me at all, but your hard pressed to make a legitimate case for why its inclusion would definitely hurt the game.

That's really not an excuse, there are games like Digital Devil Saga where every character talks except for the main one, and it worked pretty well.

just for the record, i really disliked the voice acting in fallout 3, excluding the parts where people were screaming in combat (read: when there isn't dialogue lines). and yes i still find it weird that your character will remain mute. in fallout 3 you had dialogue options, but in zelda, it's never been much more than a "yes" and "no" every 300 pages of script. link's usually just grunting or moaning during dialogue, while people either put words in his mouth or use telepathy to figure out what he's trying to say.

Well whether you like it or not is not really the issue, the point is, there are games where your character not talking and everyone else does works. Even with dialogue options, your character didn't actually say a word, what was he using sign language? Anyway that's what Zelda is, just because there is no actually voice to the characters, it doesn't change the fact that the NPC do all the talking and Link just answers with a nod or a smile, so they must be telepathic or something. All voice work would do is add sound to that already one way dialogue, nothing would be different.

I think what he's trying to say is that voice acting would take away the feel of the Zelda feel. The whole Zelda world is a fantasy, based on imagination. Voice acting would take away any sort of imagination of yours, I just stated above, about how the voice work should go. Being on progress in an acting major, a voice given to me the questions go as: Was the voice good? Is it believable? Does it match the character's wants and needs? Usually it's a yes, no, sort of kind of deal. Whereas as a character with gestures and appearance, with text at the bottom, gives a question of: How do you imagine this character to give the certain material that the character speaks, How do you make it sound fitting and believeable?

I'd prefer voice acting. Even back with Ocarina I remember wondering why Link would yell while fighting or getting hurt yet all the people talking was text. Yes I was a kid who didn't know the limits of carts... It's incredibly silly in the year 2011 to have character interaction via text imo...

Wow no voice acting? I kinda expected it but really now? That's just lame. Many games have VA and it feels more atmospheric. Walking around, hearing grunts then seeing a huge text bubble thing with the character's dialogue while he/she laughs and grunts is just weird.

While I probably wouldn't have mind the NPC having VA, I'm ultimately glad there isn't any voice acting in the new game. Chances are if they did VA, I think when most people finally heard it, everyone's opinion would be split on the quality, regardless of how good it actually is or how terrible.

The Ganon comment has me concerned though. I hope Aonuma's reluctance to comment on him only turns out to be that Ganon plays a part SS, but he won't be a the main villain. I like Ganon, but it would be nice to see them try a new villain on the major Zelda titles.

i don't get the tea table thingyBrunoBRS
It's a common Japanese metaphor, I guess. Picture a table with all the places set perfectly, all the tea ready and everything, then someone comes by and flips the table over because something on it just wasn't right. Miyamoto is notorious for doing this. A game will be near completion and he'll come in with an idea that basically requires the whole game to be changed in some way.

Miyamoto did this late in the Twilight Princess development process by suggesting that wolf Link should have a companion on his back because watching a wolf run from behind looks very boring. They added Midna at that point, which obviously changed a lot about the story and even the game mechanics.

As for voice acting, the main problem facing the Zelda devs is that naming your own character has been a staple of the series, and if you pay attention, they LOVE to have NPCs say your name in dialogue, mainly because it exudes a sense of personal contact, like somehow the people in the game know YOU (unless you've named your character something vulgar just to laugh at the resulting dialogue). A lot of us might not care about something like that, but obviously the creators of Zelda do.

I'm wondering the same thing. Whenever reading pretty much anything, mentally, all of the characters have the same "voice." To me, at least.

I think what he's trying to say is that voice acting would take away the feel of the Zelda feel. The whole Zelda world is a fantasy, based on imagination. Voice acting would take away any sort of imagination of yours, I just stated above, about how the voice work should go. Then hire good script writers and good voice actors. Problem solved.

Is the community getting so lazy that they don't even want to read text in their games anymore? I honestly don't care about having VA in my Zelda games, and I can honestly say the majority of the fanbase can agree with me on that.

Or maybe some people find the text-only dialogue of Zelda to be outdated when many modern franchises have it nowadays...?

I'm wondering the same thing. Whenever reading pretty much anything, mentally, all of the characters have the same "voice."

I remember making a voice for the Great Deku Tree in OoT. It sounded a lot like Treebeard from the Lord of the Rings movies, now that I think about it.

Also, I always have different voices for characters in books. It's not something I consciously do... but usually the author has painted the character's picture well enough that I just associate how the person looks in my imagination to how that person would probably talk (although sometimes the author explicitly describes the voice, like Voldemort's high-pitched, raspy, cold voice).

[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"] OBVIOUS link wouldn't fly... did anyone really think he'd grow wings?BrunoBRS

Or you could see "No flying like Pit" as a confirmation that you do fly. Whenever I thought of Link flying, I always Imagined him on a dragon or some other creature that flies.

well according to the trailer, link's preferred travel system is "fall down head first"

Maybe his sword is magical and flies :P

[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"]i don't get the tea table thingyJordanElek

It's a common Japanese metaphor, I guess. Picture a table with all the places set perfectly, all the tea ready and everything, then someone comes by and flips the table over because something on it just wasn't right. Miyamoto is notorious for doing this. A game will be near completion and he'll come in with an idea that basically requires the whole game to be changed in some way.

Miyamoto did this late in the Twilight Princess development process by suggesting that wolf Link should have a companion on his back because watching a wolf run from behind looks very boring. They added Midna at that point, which obviously changed a lot about the story and even the game mechanics.

oh, that. the table flipping madness of master shija. it's quite famous, i've just never heard of it being referred to as "tea table upending" :P

Meh its all fine dandy saying that it doesnt need voice acting but now its getting to a point that it wont hold. Yes the voice acting might be bad but it is possible to hire GOOD voice actors or just give everyone else GOOD voices.
As average as the voice acting was in metroid prime 3, it still made the game better and atm that is why I am probably more excited for other m than zelda, since zelda almost seems afraid to evolve

Hm. I didn't think the VA in MP3 added anything to it. I'd actually prefer just text in that game too.
