Screen protecters are good to have its not nessecary but in stops dust from getting into the side of the touch screen but if you just use a nintendo licenced styulus.. My ds olny has a few hairline scratches not a big deal. Easy to clean with glasses cleaner cloth with water
its not a must have, but i like them so you don't have to worry about scratching it, i know if u get a crappy one its not worth it, my friend had one that any stylus you put on iot would leave a huge scratch on the protector behind, it became so scratched it was harder to see and slide the stylus across, mine on the other hand works well.
They are certainly not a necessity, and this is from experience. I believe they are a waste of money, since once you open them up they collect an abundance of dust and fail to stick properly. However, this doesn't hold truth for everyone so if you feel you should give it a try then go for it. They are inexpensive, I'll give them that.
if you do decide to get screen protectors, import them from play-asia.com. The Hori screen protectors don't leave crap behind and the bottoms of them can be easily cleaned with a piece of scotch tape.
I use them and cant even see them on the DS. The only annoying this is that air bubbles sometimes get caught in between the protector and the screen when applying them. :? Mine did, but eventually it went away. :D I have both the original DS and DS Lite and when I bought the DS Lite I decided to use them.

..you can buy HORI gear at target... i think about $5-7 for screen protectors + a system cover.
i got a couple screatches here and there,not noticable unless i look hard.the ds lites backlight gets rid of em when u turn it on,so i dont care,as long as it works.to me screen protectors are for wimps and people who dont have self control.you can easily take care of a ds and not mess up the touchscreen.u dont have to press hard at all

I know you can prevent scratches by taking care of your DS but sometimes people get caught up playing a game so much that they don't realize they scratched it (took me forever to beat Jumping Jack Flash in EBA on Hard Rock mode.) Sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry. Besides I got my screen cover for free so that helps a lot.
I bought a set when I bought my ds lite and I used them until the one on the touch screen got so scratched up that I couldn't really see thru it any more which was very annoying. Its too much money to pay I think for two small pieces of plastic with some adhesive on them. I got another set which was a different brand that I used once and it got totally mangled by the stylus so I took them back to Best Buy and they gave me my money back. I noticed while I was trying to get the mangled screen protector off of the screen on my ds lite that there is already a screen protector on the screen that came on there when I bought the ds brand new. I haven't had problems with my screen being all scratched up since then.
I got Hori screen protectors for added protection(better safe than sorry). It's just preference. I got mine because of a scratch from playing Metroid on the road, now I don't have to worry.
No, i've had my DS over 2 years without a scratch, and i've never used a screen protector. Just be gentle.bluezy
