I know there are so many, and i know its hard to choose. but for me, Zelda:Oot, the first time i beat it i will never forget. Such a great game. Favorite game of all time. Mario: super mario land, Super Mario 64. so many hours in those games. i have lost SM64 though. i want to buy it again.
the reason i ask is because every zelda fan says OoT. but the ones who have the time to beat the other ones sometimes have a different answer. Just curious. ive hear people say oracle of ages/seasons are there favorite. Ive only played all the 3d ones, LttP, TLoZ, and the DS ones. also majoras mask is alot of peoples favorite, because its way different than the others, as for mario, its just that theres like 30 of them and i havent played nearly all of them. trying to get an idea on some good ones, cause reveiws are bull sometimes/

ALLTP was my first Zelda game and it is easily the best 2D Zelda (Oracles following it) and the second best Zelda game ever IMO, right behind OoT ;). I own them all (except Spirit Tracks), and have beaten most.
Woohoo! Mad props for the Super Mario Bros. 2 love. That was the first game I ever finished and it still ranks high on my best Mario games chart,
For the Legend of Zelda I would say A Link To The Past. I have not played through Skyward Sword yet so maybe that changes.
With Mario it is still Super Mario 64 though I had so much fun playing through New Super Mario Bros. Wii that it might be a tooth and nail battle at the moment.
Best Zelda? SS made it into my top 3 but my favourite Zelda is still OoT. The story, theme, races, chracters and enemys are still the most "Zelda" to me.
Best Mario? I dunno, I loved SMb1 & 3 SMW and NSMBW
Best Zelda is A Link to the Past, hands down. It's the one responsible for many established Zelda conventions. The same thing could also be said of SMB3, although both games were noteworthy for being awesome, not just for setting up conventions for their franchises.
Wind Waker takes the cake for me in the Zelda category for being the furthest evolution of the franchise. Everything since has been missing one or two major aspects. Wind Waker had it all in spades including the fact that it's the only Zelda with a truly stand out story and boy is it every fantastic!
IMO, mario seems to still be improving. I'll go with Super Mario 3D Land
Can't pick between Link to the Past (best 2D one), Ocarina (the cliche "best game ever") or Windwaker (sooooo big and pretty!!!) Ditto for Mario, can't pick between World and Galaxy. And you didn't ask this, but Metroid Prime 1 is best Metroid :P
