By DVD you mean a movie on DVD, it's no.

Infact, I see a DVD playback as an useless things on a console. If you want to watch a movie, buy a DVD player.

Iis important to a lot of people, though. I own a DVD player, but it is more convenient to watch a movie on my 360 instead. It would've been a nice feature for Wii too.

you would think by now we'd have enough DVD playing consoles...

i have a stand alone DVD player along with a gaming PC that plays dvds, a PS2, an Xbox a 360 and a surround sound system with a dvd player...

i really don't mind the Wii being unable to play dvds

Theoretically the Wii can read DVDs since Wii Disks are basically Dual Layer DVD-9's. And about the whole spinning backwards thing, that was really just a rumor. The only difference is that Wii discs (as well as Gamecube discs) are CAV (Constant Angular Velocity).

No the Wii cannot read DVD Movies. But it should. But if removing DVD playback cuts cost then that was a smart move by Nintendo.

If you mean DVD Movies, the Wii has the hardware to read them (and even data files), but not the software. It's like having a DVD Rom Unit for your computer but not having any Media Player installed. As far as I know Nintendo initially was goin to feature DVD Playback but for some reason (that I ignore) they ommited it so there's no any "official"channel to play DVDs.

BTW I prefer using my PC to watch my movies, I didn't buy my Wii to watch them,a console is just for gaming IMO.

honestly, I like the wii for not having this feature. It makes it seem like it's sticking more to its roots and thus feels more like a gaming console. i have the same problem as above. Having my playstations and sound system being able to play movies and also this bluray player crap that I hope just ends up being a fad I've got 3 dvd players hooked up for no reason.

It can but Nintendo did not want to pay the fees, so if you add software which may lock up your Wii at an update it can.

Yes, the Wii can read DVD's. That's what the discs are. But you probably mean movies. Actually, it can! Hack/mod discussion is banned though.
