What do you think Nintendo will use on there next Generation Handheld? Will they use Discs or Cartridges? I think they would use cartridges.

Cartridges don't even really have load times to begin with.

256 megabytes is 2 gigabits. With modern compression tech that 256 mb can have more content then a lot of the early cd-rom games.

I'm pretty sure you mean gigabits which are 1/8th the size of a gigabyte, making the cart 250 megabytes, in which case you are wrong because there most certainly is the technology that allows 2 gigabytes to be stored on a cart, however, they are fairly expensive. Most games for the ds out right now are on 64MB carts, with the occasional large game on a 128MB cart, which are far cheaper then 2GB carts. A 700MB CD costs less then 1 dollar to make (although they are larger then a portable gaming device would be) while a 1GB cart probably costs around 15-20 dollars to make

size on DS carts can be limiting BUT that doesn't mean that the next gen nintendo hanheld will have that problem. flash memory is becoming much more affordable in larger quantitys. the next gen one could probably even have 4 or 8 gigabyte carts.

I used to always think discs were the way of the future...until I had a discussion about the DS's card and a UMD. Cartridges and memory sticks are the data storage devices of the future and I think Nintendo will stick to its cartridge format (at least for all it's handheld consoles)

They are also more durable. Discs can get scratched really easily, which may ruin the game.

I think Nintendo will keep the cartridge format because of the decreasing cost of solid-state memory.

They'll probably stick with cartridges, since they load faster than discs and that's the point of a handheld.

i think they will stick with cartridges unless they plan on pulling a psp kind of ordeal with the umd but i doubt it. nintendo wants less loading times and i think cartridges are their best bet.

  1. Cartridges w/out batteris
  2. Disks
  3. cartidges w/ batters

I dont really know the mechanics of current day cartridges but in the past they ran off batteries which means they will die eventually. You may be able to scratch a disk but if you take care of it, it can last forever. And you can remove scratches.

I think with playstation's memory card they were able to make cartridges that dont use batteries?? And then you have gameboy advanced and DS game cartidges that probably dont use batteries either.

I was going to argue for Disks but then i realized you need memory card when you have disks so its basically the same thing as a cartidge only now you need two things instead of one.

cartridges have never been a bad thing, so i don't see they'd change to discs. my only worry though is that the next nintendo handheld uses cartridges the size of a human tooth. after all, they just keep getting smaller....
