A lot of gamers are playing their Wii's on HDTV's and get very differing results. Some think it looks good, some think it's horrible. You might just say this is just the individual but I disagree, I think that in a lot of cases it's the TV or to be more specific the TV's scaler. On a 1080p TV, the 337,920 pixels that the Wii outputs are being stretched to fill the roughly 2 million pixels of a 1080p TV. This stretching is handled by the video processor (or scaler) and the results can vary dramatically.

I have played my Wii on 4 HDTVs via component cables running in 480p mode and the results varied on each TV. The best by far has been my Sony Bravia 52 inch XBR4. Wii games on that TV look fairly Crisp and some games for some reason even look as sharp as my PS3 games. This is kind of surprising because supposedly people say you should play it on a smaller TV but the 2 smaller TV's I tried it on look noticeably more jagged and pixelated then my Bravia. One of those smaller TV's is a well-reviewed Samsung (who is known for making good TVs). So it's not simply a matter of good TV's do a good job with the Wii, it really is a case by case kind of thing.

My advice for any avid wii owners who are planning on buying an HDTV . . . bring your Wii to the store and try it on whatever TV's you are considering. The difference the TV makes for the Wii is in my opinion a bigger different then either the PS3 or 360.

The choice of a HDTV shouldn't matter, the display should be the same no matter what model of tv you are using.

Of course it matters, for any content, but especially for the Wii because the Wii is not native 720p/1080p content and has to be upscaled. The Scaler chip as I explained above has to take the Wii's pixels and fill up nearly 7 times as many pixels with it. Scalers can go from cheap general purpose chips that you find in cheap TV's to higher-end chips to standalone scalars that cost thousands of dollars, and needless to say they have varying levels of quality.

It probably does not make THAT much difference to go through that much trouble. Nobody is going to buy a hdtv with the Wii in mind.

They actually are supposed to let you bring your own devices to try them out. I've never actually tried to do this though. Also the Wii looks great on my 42" tv.

My Wii is running on a Sylvania 20in EDTV LCD. It maxes out at 480p but it doesn't look to bad. We also have like a 40in 1080i HDTV in our house but the Wii looks worse on it. It is supposed to upconvert 480p images to 1080i but it doesn't help on the Wii.

We have a really high quality LG 42" that runs in 1080p, but I run it on a Magnavox that prolly runs in 720p or so. Looks great to me. I've played some 360 games on it and they actually look the same as good Wii games since it's low-def for 360 but HD for Wii .

in dominican republic, they most likely will. :) SO if the TC is there, he/she can get around that. If not... it may be harder, but now at days, I would not be surprise if they let you.

It makes a huge difference. The hardware has to be pretty smart to figure out what color the missing pixels should be a fairly powerful to keep up in real time.

The TV you choose can make a huge difference when it needs to upscale in image (without the upscaling, you would have huge black borders or tons of black pixels in between the pixels that are actually used).

So lemme get this straight... if I purchase a "Video Upscaler Device" and plug my Wii component cabels into it, then plug it into the TV I will get an HD quality image?!

Not quite. No upscaler can produce detail that doesn't already exist in an image. A good upscaler just adds information that makes an enlarged image look good. Whenever you enlarge an image, you need to add pixels in order to fill in the blanks. Think of a 1 foot by 1 foot puzzle and pulling the pieces evenly apart in order to make a 2 foor by 2 foot puzzle -- there's going to be blank spaces in between each puzzle piece in the two foot by two foot puzzle. An upscaler guesses what those blank puzzle pieces should look like, and fills them in. A cheap upsaler is not very good at guessing what those blank pieces should look like. An HD image was created as a 2 foot by 2 foot image and has extra detail built in. Have you ever zoomed in to a digital image on your PC and noticed how blocky it becomes? That's like a cheap upscaler. A good upscaler keeps the image smooth.

... And this is one of those comparisons we'd expect a good gaming site or magazine to do for us. just like when there used to be graphic card comparisons, driving wheelcomparisons, price vs quality and that sort of things! A good gaming site would get like 6 HDTVs from the major brands. try them and post the results for us!

some of you seem to be more knowledgeable than i am at this subject. i think it matters what kind of tv you hook your tv up to because even picture quality from your cable or satellite service varies by brands and models. anyway, i have a 50" samsung dlp and i am very pleased.

I played it on 480p cables on our samsung 55 inch full screen and it looks great. It looks better on my grandparents TV which is a dell which I'm guessing is 26inch HDTV widescreen. It works excellent on my 32inch widescreen HDTV though and thats my preference.

I have also used several different T.V's all with good results, below are my ratings on each.

1) 60" Mitsubshi 1080p DLP = 8 out of 10

2) 60" Samsung 1080p DLP = 9 out of 10

3) 32" Sanyo 1080i LCD = 7 out of 10

Everyone that has played on multiple T.V's should list their results this way, maybe we can find a common problem

My inexpensive Westinghouse 37" LCD which does 720P or 1080i somehow does a great job with my Wii. Go figure.

01_5k001

None that I have used. RE4:Wii Edition is not pretty on an HDTV, period. I've used multiple HDTV's with my Wii. Some games, specifically GameCube to Wii ports, tend to look worse than Wii games built with the Wii's hardware in mind.

I'm currently using a 60'in Mitsubishi plasma with DLP and most of my Wii games look fantastic. Scalers can make a difference when standard definition is involved, as other have pointed out.

Nice advice. :) I'm planning on purchasing a new television sometime in the near future -- probably a 40" television or so, I'll have to say. I was considering a Samsung or LG television, but thanks for the information. I'll do some more research on it when the time comes; I never really considered how much a television would make such a difference.

Samsung is now the leader when it comes to LCD technology so there's not much question on where to go

I used to deliver 36 inch CRT TVs to people's homes. I had to lift them out of the truck, unpack them, bring them in to the home (sometimes up multiple rows of stairs), and set them up wherever the customer wanted it all on my own. Dollies usually just got in the way so I just carried them. No way I could do that now, but it can be done.

You're a machine. I was glad to get rid of my big TV because I was constantly afraid that one day, my entertainment center would get tired of holding the beast up, and the thing would tip over and crush one of my kids.

I never heard that before, yeah they want to make a sale but then there is always the option that you wont buy it and two there is the problem of liability. I mean the TVs are already on which serve as a demo for thier function. Think about test driving a car, they will let you take it around the block because you cant test a cars performance sitting still, however maybe you want to use it for off road racing, they aren't going to let you take the car in the desert though so you can try it. Thats why the TV's have video on them, and a number of them have devices hooked up to them like a game console, or a bluray player or something. I don't see any major retailer saying, "yeah come on in and try Mario Kart on our TV".

They all do, just most customers aren't educated enough to take advantage of it

You should never buy a TV without watching it for an hour or more with whatever you're going to be using with it. That means an hour of SD watching and an hour of HD watching for each and every set you plan on buying.

So a person can just walk in and upset the whole display with all thier home entertainment devices to try on a tv they might buy. I doubt it, they already have displays featuring the bulk of items found in the common tv watching rooms. They aren't going to have people coming in and screwing that up, so I'm going to disagree. If you you find some small store that allows that, thats possible. But please your not walking into Best Buy to try Mario Galaxy on thier TV display. Thats the exact reason they have displays in the first place.

Nope, completely wrong

The displays are just TV's set up in a row, consider that 99.9% of them have inputs on the side you're home free and don't even have to move the set

Also the signals that go through for all the TV's suck because it's split so much

Any store will let you hook up your Wii for an hour (or take one off display to make the sale)

It's easier to let a customer watch an hour of TV then to deal with an open box return.

They'll also let you screw with the settings and calibration in the store as well plus get a feel for the remote

I'm still shocked at how many people don't use their power as a consumer, you understand that YOU'RE the one in charge when you shop right?

I have tried my wii on a Sony 46" Bravia XBR5 & a Samsung 46" aswell. It looks slightly better on my Samsung. Ive also seen my cousins wii on a Magnovax 36" aswell, but it didnt look very good minly because the black level & the TV causes slight distorition in of certain areas (not aspect ratio wise)

I would say the Wii looks at least BETTER on all High Definiton Televisions, it will never look worse than standard definition.

The Playstation 2 looks like crap in HD regardless.
