This thread is about the VC and emulation.

So we've got the VC all up and running with an awesome array of games from all of the top systems of the 90's...well the ones that really matter anyway.  It's great, I love the idea and plan to support it.  But I wonder:  Is the VC really going to take off like so many people know (hope?) it will?  Honestly, I don't really see this VC catching on.
It's 2007 and video game emulation has ben around for many years.  Usually, the only investment required (beyond owning a computer) is a USB controller.  You can buy them at some places for $20.

My point is basically that every game on the VC and 100,000,000 more are available for free on the internet, so why is Nintendo banking on the idea that people will want to pay $5-$10 a pop?  Maybe now's a good time for me to make it clear that I do not support emulation.  Emulation hurts us all.  A true gamer doesn't resort to that for many reasons.
But in the real world, people do use emulators.  LOTS of people.  And that's why I see the VC as a risk Nintendo probably shouldn't have taken.  The problem is so widespread that I just don't see this working out for Nintendo.

What do you think?  Is emulation so widespread that the VC is already doomed?  Honestly, you know what I'm talking about.

You would be surprised how many people who actually obey laws there are.

Legal for your personal use. ROMS are still illegal if you distribute them over the web and even if you have the original copy of the game.

That true gamer thing isn't true.  If it weren't for emulation I would have never bought a NES or a Genesis again.  Emulation helps true gamers appreciate games they got rid of when they were younger.

I don't think the VC is going to fail.  Sure, alot of people know about emulation but there are many more that don't.

I don't do emulation much anymore, just the VC.  And that's only for SNES games.

I think old school gaming is a little overated, I really don't get it when people download something they already own in some form either. But the VC's sales have been immense its certainly here to stay.

If you actually own the game you wouldn't need an emulated version of it. So you would only have an Emulater and be using it illegally. More people choose to buy them legally then emulate them illegally.

Interesting.  But in your case, you must be one in a million.  I think what your saying is that you sort of used emulation as a way to pre-view or rent games before you decided to actually go buy them.  You did the right thing in the end, but I'd be willing to bet the only console out there that's possibly benefited from emulation is the original X Box.  How many people would actually go out and do what you did?  I'd bet not many.  But who knows.

While some people do buy games they already own, for the convience of not having to pull out that old system, and hoping it still works, and things like that. More people will probably buy games that they missed out on.
