[QUOTE="Pices"]That'll keep the HD fanboys quiet for nowArc2012Ha! Not likely. Still, this was a lot better score than I thought it would get. yeah im still mad its a arcade shooter instead of 3rd person
That'll keep the HD fanboys quiet for nowPicesCouldn't let this slip, we still havet he superior version.
[QUOTE="bobcheeseball"]Yes, it has co-op.Question does this have co-op?
If so then I'm interested.

Woohooo! Thanks :)
[QUOTE="wiifan001"]Very good. The developers took what works best for the wii that wouldn't work as well on the other consoles and created a great product.SepewrathYeah you don't see alot of shooters on the other consoles. On-rail shooters work better with the wii than anything else.

When gamespot reviews it, and it gets less than 9/10 than you can happily say you have ther superior version. Till then plz don't spew out your opinions.

i typically enjoy rail shooters. the only problem that i've encountered with some of them like hotd overkill is that the "fun factor" doesn't last very long after you complete the game. umbrella chronicles had replay value and i think that this game will as well. positive news is good news even though ign sometimes rates games a little on the high side.
NGamer review whicjh gives the game a 7.0 and having read the review I understand why.
Nomad0404
this review touched on what i was worried about in my previous post. according to ngamer there is no replay value which would make me hesitate to pay full price for the game.

They didn't even mention the challenge mode or if there are any hidden items like in Umbrella Chronicles. IGN didn't mention items either, so I assume there aren't any. Hidden items and level grades are really what give Umbrella Chronicles such good replay value. Neither review mentions those things... but unfortunately that doesn't mean they're not there. Bleh... give us all the info, reviewers.Replay value is what will change this game from a purchase to a rent for me. But people said UC doesn't have replay value either, and I've put a ton of hours into that game. It'd be nice to just get a review that does its job and gives us all the facts about a game....

there are collectables and challenge modes, how come there can be no replay value?there are collectables and challenge modes, how come there can be no replay value?PicesWhere did you see that there are collectables? They weren't mentioned in either review we have so far, but it wouldn't surprise if they just didn't think that was worth mentioning.
For some reason, hidden items are what made Umbrella Chronicles so lasting for me. There's something about going through levels over and over trying to blow up every possible set piece to find the hidden items.... I've played some levels at least a dozen times and still haven't found all the items.
If it doesn't have replay value I'm not going to buy it.
tom95b
I think the challenge modes are the replayability, which is a pretty good idea.. unfortunately I rarely buy games based on story, because once I've learned all the story there isnt much of a reason to go back lol, especially since I dont like on-rails..

Nice review. There's some really valid points that haven't been brought up anywhere.
The problem with these new breeds of on-rails shooters (Dead Space Extraction and RE: Darkside Chronicles) is that they try to make the game too cinematic. There's too much dull moments where there are no enemies on the screen. There's nothing to do except sit and watch as the game tries in vain to "increase tension". This really hurts gameplay and replayability.
Would you want to replay a level again knowing that there are several long stretches of dead, non-interactive moments that you cannot skip and have to endure?
They overrate what they hyped and underrate what they didn't. I'm not sure how much they hyped this though.8.5 seems a bit high. It's a good game, but I would probably give it a 7 or 7.5. Well, it's IGN after all, they overrate all games.

You could say the same thing about a lot of different games and types of games in general. First to come to mind as an extreme is Metal Gear Solid, but really any game with cutscenes is this way.The problem with these new breeds of on-rails shooters (Dead Space Extraction and RE: Darkside Chronicles) is that they try to make the game too cinematic. I agree that it does hamper replayability, but it's not a unique problem to this new breed of rail shooters. If anything, they're MORE like other types of games than they were in the past.
Ah, finally, had to go to Eurogamer for a good discussion of replayability:
Replayability is always one of the most attractive aspects of on-rails shooters, and Extraction certainly scores highly in this regard. With a couple of branching pathways in every level, hard-to-reach logs and improved gradings to go for, there's a decent incentive to go back and see what you missed. Another important facet to mention is the game's excellent drop-in-drop-out co-op play, which should make the tense slog all the more enjoyable for many.In addition to an exciting story mode is the game's score-based challenge mode, which unlocks gradually as you play through the main event. Set in the game's main environments, you face 10 waves of Necromorphs, with the idea to clear them as quickly and accurately as possible without being grappled with or taking too much damage. Even after you've had your fill of the main story mode, it's an exciting diversion which serves as an excellent accompaniment.Eurogamer
This is really pushing me towards BUY BUY BUY, because those are the types of things I really enjoy. And for some reason, the fact that you can pick up objects and toss them with telekinesis like in the original Dead Space (and Half-life 2) is a huge plus for me. It's just a blast.
They also mention that they think the pacing works really well in this game, where the slower parts are used effectively. So apparently there aren't SO many of them that it necessarily makes you get tired of them.

No, I'm not talking about cutscenes. I'm talking about extreme lulls in the actual game. Take a look at the latest RE: Darkside Chronicles video from the other thread. Between 1m45s and 3m20s, you are actually in game. You can shoot and waste your bullets if you want too. But, you only encounter one single enemy that whole time. There is no action. It may be ok the first time through, but boring and annoying afterwards.

These lulls in a rail shooter are pretty much the same as cutscenes in other games - there's no interaction and you just watch.
My point is that cutscenes in other games are just as bad as the actionless parts of a rail shooter in terms of replayability, unless you can skip them. They're good on the first time around, but when you go through them again, you just want to get back to the action.
You could say the same about the backtracking in a Metroid Prime game or the long dungeon areas in an RPG. They mess with the pacing in terms of action and excitement, but we put up with them so much that it probably won't be that much of an issue in Extraction.

The review from my favorite gaming site ever, Gamesradar.com, has confirmed there are in fact collectible items a la RE:UC, but they also describe these as a potential negative...
"If you're an obsessive collector, there are plenty of text and audio logs to snag out of the environment with your telekinesis beam, each one explaining a bit more of what went down before the marker was dug up. However, due to the constant flinging and shaking camera, some of these pickups (which include ammo and weapon upgrades) are damn near impossible to nab the first time through. True, youcouldgo back through and get them all, but if you miss it again, say nine minutes into the level, do you really want to restart and try again?"
Either way, most of the reviews so far are treating this much better than I ever suspected. I'll definitely be getting this either used or after a price drop, since I haven't even gotten Metroid Prime Trilogy or Muramasa yet, and my personal economy doesn't indicate I will any time soon.
Why do you think that? Do you have the game?[QUOTE="Xyonblade"]
8.5 seems a bit low, should be 9 or 9.5

5/5 seems a bit overrated:P
Haha ya I saw that and now I'm wondering if this is the best on-rails shooter of all time or something. A light gun shooter that warrants a perfect score has to be amazing, it's just a question of whether this score is deserved :P.Haha ya I saw that and now I'm wondering if this is the best on-rails shooter of all time or something. You be the judge.
Reviewers are so lazy. So far, I've read four reviews, and I've found at least one more bit of basic, factual information in each of them that wasn't in the others. The GamePro review mentions a leveling system based on accuracy and generally how well you do. That's a pretty important bit that no one else mentioned....

On-rail shooters work better with the wii than anything else. So does a FPS, or a TPS or any other perspective you can think of. Like I expected, if you read the IGN review, the horror aspect was thrown out the window. That is because the game is on rails, you cant provide scares in a controlled situation. Without that feeling of tension that was always present in the original Dead Space and the actual scare moments, its just not Dead Space. Its just another action game where you shoot monsters.
The review hints at tacked on motion controls :|
