8.5 seems a bit high. It's a good game, but I would probably give it a 7 or 7.5. Well, it's IGN after all, they overrate all games.

Yeh, I think it is to high. I reckon it's worth a 7.5.
I third this .. :)

[QUOTE="wiifan001"][QUOTE="Sepewrath"] Yeah you don't see alot of shooters on the other consoles. SepewrathOn-rail shooters work better with the wii than anything else. So does a FPS, or a TPS or any other perspective you can think of. Like I expected, if you read the IGN review, the horror aspect was thrown out the window. That is because the game is on rails, you cant provide scares in a controlled situation. Without that feeling of tension that was always present in the original Dead Space and the actual scare moments, its just not Dead Space. Its just another action game where you shoot monsters.
Yeh, I do agree with that. I basically feel the same regarding RE. When they released RE4 it just didn't feel like RE anymore.
I'm disappointed this is another on-rails shooter. I want to be able to freely explore the world like in the original Dead Space; not be taken by the hand the whole time. I hope they're able to released a true Dead Space game for Wii sometime in the future.:(
4.5/5 from gamespy: http://wii.gamespy.com/wii/dead-space/1028656p1.html
Surprised at the scores so far, didn't think they would be this high. But even tho I liked the first one It's still hard for me to get excited about an on-rail game. If this was 3rd person I would get it for sure but on-rail!? maybe I'llpick it up eventuallybut right now I'm in no rush to do so.

SepewrathYet there are other reviews that say the exact opposite. And if you think about it, the part I bolded above just isn't true. What about horror movies?
Personally, I've never really been scared by horror films, so I don't expect to be scared by Extraction. I also haven't been very scared throughout the original Dead Space (I'm almost to the end). The only games to have ever actually scared me are the original Resident Evil games, especially the GC remake of the first one. And ironically, it's the lack of good controls that makes that game so scary, because you know that if something jumps out at you or comes running at you, you're gonna have to deal with the tank controls to either kill it or run away.
But my point is that if you get scared or at least a little freaked out by some movies, then you can have the same reaction to Extraction. The fact that it's on rails doesn't mean it can't still be scary. It's just a different type of fear than if you had full control.
What about horror movies? The only horror movies ever to get me was Nightmare on Elm Street when I was a kid, if that didn't scare the hell out of you when you were a kid, you must have had some issues or slept with your parents of something lol. The original Dead Space had a strong aura of tension throughout, like that first scene where you get chased into the elevator, you know your suppose to escape, but your in full control of your hauling ass so you can get caught which gives it tension. In Extraction you know you will be caught or you wont, its not up to you, so there is no tension. Horror movies do one of two things, they prey on your pyschology like the Elm Street series did, saying as a kid, your not safe when you go to sleep, something you have to do.
Or they go with the jump moments like the cliche close the mirror and there's the killer. A good horror movie or game can do the former like Silent Hill and to an extent the original Dead Space, Extraction would be lucky if can sneak in the latter. Because like I said, on rails its already decided whether or not its threat, and if it is a threat the game makes it clear and gives you a chance to react accordingly. Unlike in the original Dead Space, you walk into a room with no oxygen and therefore no sound, you swing the camera around and boom and necro right in your face and its very much threat and you have little time to react. Thats a moment that can never be pulled off in a rail shooter. Oh and I never found RE to be scary, slow witted, slow moving zombies are not very intimidating.
Yeh, I do agree with that. I basically feel the same regarding RE. When they released RE4 it just didn't feel like RE anymore.redfield_137
Well with RE4, the series was in need of a new direction, after one game, I cant say the same about Dead Space.
Yeah, that's what I mean. These lulls in a rail shooter are pretty much the same as cutscenes in other games - there's no interaction and you just watch.
My point is that cutscenes in other games are just as bad as the actionless parts of a rail shooter in terms of replayability, unless you can skip them. They're good on the first time around, but when you go through them again, you just want to get back to the action.
JordanElek
But, most cutscenes in other games are skippable for that very reason. If long cutscenes cannot be skipped, that's bad game design. The game should be knocked for it.
Good Design: HOTD Overkill
Cinematic moments are separate from the actual game. Cutscenes are entertaining and hilarious, but are skippable after the first playthrough.
Bad Design: Extraction / Darkside Chronicles
Actionless, cinematic moments are part of the level. They cannot be skipped or fast forwarded. It's ok first time through, but bad in terms of replayability. After the first or second play through, you could careless about the plot and their futile attempts to scare/shock you. You just want to play the game, shoot stuff, get a higher score, and grab collectibles, etc...
Like one of the reviewer said...if you missed a collectible in the middle of the level, would you want to replay the level again knowing that for long stretches, you won't be doing anything?
Why do you think that? Do you have the game?[QUOTE="Xyonblade"]
8.5 seems a bit low, should be 9 or 9.5

What are the people basing their claims on when they think 8.5 is a bit too high? I loved the first dead space, the anime was great, and so far from what i'v seen of this game I expected it to be a 9/10 or a 10/10 like the first dead space game.
I will get this game, and I bet I will love it

The first game gave you full control of your character. This one does not. That is all that is needed when asking why it deserves a lower score.
Well, i am playing the game and it is pretty damn good. It is interactive entertainment. Its like a 6 hour movie, but you can interact with things. Shooting the limbs off the monsters is very cool and accurate. You have to stay on your toes and grab items like weapons and health as the camera pass by them. You cant cut out the cut screens because there are no cut screens...the game plays like a story or movie and the action come at you on the fly..it is seamless integration. This is a highly polished bit of entertainment; the acting, visuals, music, everything is top notch. Just to simply dismiss this game because it is a rail shooter is a mistake. This is nothing like House of the Dead OK. Its your loss if you want to act like this is beneath you or something. I would say this is one of the best games i have ever played on the Wii.

i played teh game, and as it gerne it deserve a 9 (and I tend to no give 9s) but 8.5 is pretty close and good. you can not compare this one iwth the 1st in any sense. this one is a complete different gerne. imoI went and picked up the game earlier today and that sure wasn't an easy task. I went to 4 different stores and nobody had it in stock, and the one Gamestop that I visited wouldn't sell me the game telling me that it dropped tomorrow and I had to reserve it because he had no extras. So I called another Gamestop about 2 miles away and they said they had 4. Went in picked it up and drove my a$$ down to the other gamestop went in and said to the same guy "How much can I get forthis used copy of Dead Space Extraction?"....."Oh wait, it doesn't come out till tomorrow." as I pull it out of a Gamestop bag. So that's that and as far as the game goes I'm only about 20 minutes in and I love it. I'm getting the whole Dead Space feel all over again and I even played the original Dead Space earlier today to hype myself up for playing extraction.
True, normally you cant compare games, but this new IP, dead space, has had so much planning put into it. And from what I'v read so far about extraction point, any studio that is allowed to make a dead space gamewill make a great game. Hell even the anime was good. This is a brilliant new IP, with many long hours of planning, writing, and so on, it sucks you in.
If a dead space game ever gets made that ever gets a score below 8, I will be more surprised than if they keep scoring around 9/10 or 10/10.
