Do you find RPGs on a small screen less immersive?

I'm considering buying OoT 3D, but I've never felt immersed in an RPG on a handheld. I can't really feel like I'm in another world when I'm squinting at a screen a few inches across. I still enjoy them for the strategy, team building and number crunching, but OoT doesn't really have any of that.

No. Pokemon White was extremely immersive and highly addictive almost till the end of the main story. I think by what you said, you should skip this Zelda on the 3DS.

Yeah, I was mainly thinking of getting it because frankly there aren't a lot of other options coming soon.

Nope. A small screen doesn't stop me from training my Pokemon, defeating the Elite Four, throwing pokeballs everywhere, and still wear a damn red hat.

The size of the screen doesn't have a significant impact on my sense of immersion. It's what's on the screen that matters.

Get yourself Rune Factory 3, it is pretty immersive per se and a better story/social model than the other RPGs. You do not feel immersed concentrated on a pair of small screens using buttons and stylus?

yeah, I don't really equate Zelda to rpg in the sense of number crunching and planning out class trees and builds, etc. I am looking forward to SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked as the first 3DS game like that....but its been kicked out to August now. *sigh* I tried to like Spirit Tracks but I just don't like those sorts of timing puzzles and the whole 'gotta throw X just right to get Y and Z triggered to open some door over there' mechanic. To the actual question, no I don't find the small screen less immersive, so long as the graphics and menus are crisp I quite enjoy it. I do miss expansive games like LOTRO and would love to have something like that on the 3DS someday. Rune Factory 3 was a good recommendation as well, we just need more 3DS games out there to balance out the overpopulation of fighting games coming down the pipe :/ imo at least

To me it's about immersive gameplay and a compelling story. To be honest a smaller screen can actually be a good thing because you end up blocking out the rest of the world.

The question is moot for me- I get immersed in action games; 1st/3rd P shooters and melee combat games- fast-paced, kill badguys stuff. RPGs on the other hand, I enjoy for the character building and the (mostly) epic quests.

I don't know why but I actually find handheld RPGs more immersive than those on consoles. Maybe it was all those RPGs I played on my GameBoy as a kid, or how close I sat to my TV as a kid!:P

Yeah it is, but not in the traditional sense. You PLAY a ROLE through a story in a GAME. Role Playing Game? Sounds right to me.

By that logic almost every game ever made would be an RPG.

None of the Zelda games are RPG's. They're adventure games.

Also, to answer the question at hand, I can spend hours with the likes of Pokemon and Dragon Quest IX, so no.

Most racing, sports, party (like Carnival Games and Mario Party), fighters, puzzle and strategy (like empire building or Sim City) games have no stories at all. That's a lot of games.

In my experience (regardless of it being a handheld or console game) unless the game has solid writing and fair graphics I wont get truly immersed. What is your handheld experience though? Do you think it's the 2D graphics that have put you off from being truly immersed? Do you think something like Phantasy Star 0 or Crisis Core on the PSP would fare better in your eyes? Anyways, like people have said, Zelda is an Action Adventure game so you definitely will not find any of the number crunching from real RPG's but you do have the new top widescreen which could help.

(With your logic), Mario Galaxy is an RPG along with Super Mario World as well, Metroid is an RPG, Call of Duty - RPG. Getting my point? RPGs, need some sort of customization of the main character(s) and allow them to level up (Baldur's Gate, Fallout, Neverwinter Nights) and also another thing that differs Zelda from RPGs,which some devs arn't doing, is a Turn Based Strategy, whether ATB or just turns.

The only Zelda game to fit the category of RPG is Zelda II The Adventure of Link (which is the most difficult and most different, except CD-i, in the series).

SimCity _IS_ a role playing game! You play the role of a City Major or City Hall. The assumption is more that you can choose character types to call it RPG, but those must be easily conceptualized. Arcade games like breakout would be more easily called non RPG but the category seems to be a leftover from precomputing times. A City Major is easily conceptualized and empathized with, a platform jumping Mario is not. Maybe RPGs should be called dungeon crawlers and even Castlevania includes some character development (in the acquisition of weapons), but RPG is shorter.

Yeah I know, but it's just something that makes sense. Role Playing literally means 'Playing a Role'. They may as well have called RPG's dungeon crawlers (like syntotic said) because the name RPG doesn't specifically fit the game genre of RPG's.

Absolutely not.

Examples:

Pokemon Games

Dragon Quest IX

Dragon Quest Monsters Joker

Dragon Quest VI

Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy III (Remake)

....and those are just some examples for the DS
