I usually prefer fantasy over realism. However, anime is awful when it's terribly generic looking and makes you think "Haven't I seen that girl on the cover of like, fifty games, mangas, and DVDs?". It's easier to get attached to a character when they stand out. Writing is important, but in a video game, their appearance is what first grabs your interest. Obviously, realism has to try even harder to avoid looking generic. WWII games don't have to try at all though, since nobody except war-fanatics and gun-aficionados will ever be able to tell any two games apart.
My cat has completely black fur and green eyes and manages to look distinctly different from most other black cats. My friend's quaker parrot (don't ever get one. Birds are evil, and this little monster would rather be all alone and starve than let anybody, human, rabbit, or even bird, try to get near it. they're also noisy as hell, and take pleasure in screaming endlessly) looks like every other quaker parrot, even my friend can't tell the difference. Just like the cast of Final Fantasy XII! :P
