Does anyone know if you need pokemon diamond or pearl to play pokemon battle rev

Im not sure whether you need pokemon diamond or pearl for the ds to play battle revolution. I have a DS its just that i dont want to spend all the money on the gamefor it and I really want battle revolution because most of my friends are going to be getting it. Is there anyone here that can clear it up for me?

but if u do get it and you don't upload your own pokemon then you'll have to use rental pokemon, and of course the rental pokemon are pathetic, this game is basically only for people with diamond and pearl
