Instead of DSi, why don't they make a new DS with better graphics (Gamecube quality), that is backward compatible with current DS games, plays new Advanced DS games, and also Gamecube discs? Don't tell me that they couldn't make a portable to read those small Gamecube discs. And don't tell me that it wouldn't fly off the shelves if they did. This way they could continue making DS games and making new DS Advanced games at the same time. I saved all my old Gamecube discs in the hope that this would happen eventually given Nintendo's trend of making new systems play old games (like DS playing GBA games.) They probably had the idea of a portable system that plays Gamecube discs all along when they decided to release them so small.

Who wouldn't want this over DSi?

Here's why.

DS is selling like hotcakes and also has the highest userbase in the world (with the exception of PS2), so to abandon this platform is silly.

and Nintendo would never make a portable console that played GC games, because they couldn't make money off of reselling the games.

And another thing. Nintendo is trying to make money. Going all out and making the best handheld they can won't make sense. They wouldn't gain as much money as they could if they just keep making minor imporvements. They save money on the porduction of the actual product but sell the same number of units. Does anyone get me cause I can't explain it well.

Wouldn't you not be able to save your Gamecube files? Correct me if I'm wrong (I never owned a Gamecube), but I thought you needed memory cards for it.

Load times is the correct answer! Sure the GC and Wii uses DVD's, but that's only to compete with the current market. The new DS could use discs, but they have a history of ignoring better graphics/ sound over speed/ gameplay. The way I see it, portaible media drives are becoming cheaper and larger. Why not put the current 2Gb cartridges on 32Gb ones? Have to look at it from a business standpoint. Also they won't abondon the DS any time soon. Expect a new DS announcement somewhere from 2010-2012.

Why would I want a handheld that plays Gamecube discs? That's like asking me why I would want a handheld that also plays GBA games. I think it would be logital to have the next handheld play newer and better DS games with better graphics, and have a slot for Gamecube discs to add a replay value to these old games. So what if the loading times aren't great? People would be buying it for the next generation of DS games. The Gamecube slot would just be a bonus. Just like with the current DS. I didn't buy it to play GBA games, but the GBA slot made it an even cooler investment. I just thought this seemed a logical way to go. But I guess we all think differently.

I'm betting the next Nintendo hand-held -- the next TRUE advancement, that is -- will have GC game quality graphics and abilities, but the other posters are correct. Nintendo would rather (re)sell games to it's loyalists via download as opposed to putting an expensive and fragile disc reading device into a mobile unit. Downloadable content would do two things: Make the games available for a nominal price... Or make some of the less common games available, PERIOD! Also, it would make the unit cheaper to build and, therefore, cheaper to sell. Spinning media in hand-held units should be phased out and/or obsolete a generation or two before it is in consoles as a way to combat piracy and produce machines with fewer moving parts. Just one fool's opinion...
