Hello there!
I was just wondering, does Nintendo has any plans of making Wii able to read DVD movies? Maybe with a new peripheral or a future update?

ya I was thinking that all nintendo could do was release a program that had all the codes and software to play DVD's, sort of like that way a computer DVD drive can't play DVD's without a DVD player program.

Considering the wii drive can read data off a regular dvd disk at 8x (yes they are regular dvd disks and yes it does read at dvd 8x) I don't see any hardware based limitations. I think it's due to licensing issues. IF your console is a dvd player you better pay up some royalties, so the software drivers required are missing, to make the wii cheaper.
And frankly my dear, I don't give a dam, if you haven't picked up a dvd player (they cost $20 (au) for christsake) then seriously..whats going on.
I have 4 dvd players lying around they house, they were all cheap ass, they all still work perfectly, scrounge a few bucks and buy one.
Well it isnt all useless. I just use my 360 because it is so much easier to navigate the DVD with the controller such as rewind, fastforward or skip.Buy a DVD player if you want to watch DVD. Today, it's really a useless thing to have on a console.

It's not entirely useless. Our TV only has two component inputs, and one is used for digital cable. That leaves only one input for the Wii and a DVD player. We could just buy a switcher, but it'd be nice to be able to use the Wii to play DVDs.
