Every RPG fan should not pass this up.

If you love the DS and RPGs make sure you pick this game up! It is definitely worth playing until some of the other RPGs come out later this year.

This is the best RPG on the DS right now (other than Pokemon if you consider Pokemon a RPG).

I immediately went to GameStop after school and picked up a copy. I'm loving it so far, even though I haven't played too much.

You have to go back to town to save.  So basically you have to go down a dungeon and explore the different levels, then you can go back to the top floor and exit back to the town...

Yes.

The game is the best I've played in awhile (besides Pokemon).  There's definitely something different about this title and I know I'm going to have a blast with this thing for awhile.  It's very challenging and there's a ton of freedom.  It took me over an hour just to get past the first floor, so I can only imagine how long this game will last me with 30 of them.

IGN's review of it makes it sound pretty intimidating.  i myself haven't even played advance wars due to the fact that i'm outright horrible at strategy video games.  i'll have to pass up this game unfortunately even though it sounds like a solid title.  still waiting for atlus to release PSP version of Riviera though.

I had no clue about this game. The last thing I need is another RPG right now but after reading you comments and some reviews my mind is starting to change. It  is always great to get an underappreciated game and love it. I think I might add this to the 2 games I am buying next week.

Yeah, games like these always pass under the radar. And I highly recommend you check this game out. I love RPGs and I think this is the best RPG on the DS right now for more mature RPG`ers.

Just a few more info on this game: it's developed by the guys behind the Shin Negumi Tensai series. The designer/producer is the same guy who did Trauma Center, and the music is made by the composer who did Actraiser. So this is a high-quality game and not just a budgeted title.

I think this game will have a limited release. At my local gamestore, Game Crazy, EB/Gamestop, they only had three pre-orders, including me. So if you get the chance, I hope you pick this up and add this to your RPG library.

It's definitely worth playing until Dragon Quest IX and the Final Fantasies come out.

Um....I don't know yet since this game is like 40+ hours long and I only played about 5! :P

But I did hear from an interview that there won't be a new game+ type of thing but there will be more quests, etc. after you pass the game....I think.

If this game was 3rd perso, I would be all over it.

But the the 1st person dungeon exploring makes me a bit "bleh" about the game.

Not if you're a fan of Dragon Quest.

The battle system is exactly the same as the old traditional DQ games, exactly the same, with a fresh feeling to it. There's a lot of strategy involved than just pressing buttons. For example, fire magic effects certain monsters more than others. As well as ice, thunder, etc. Also, status ailments play a important key. And it's very deep for a turn-based battle system.

It's also addicting which makes the grinding more fun. It's not simple or boring but it's very solid.

Basically, if Pokemon's battle system is elementary level, Etrian Odyssey's system is Harvard.

Honestly, you have to get Pokemon.  No matter how much I love this game, I have to say, Pokemon is much better.  It isn't because the core game Pokemon is good, it is because of things like WiFi and just how everyone has the game.  Etrian Odyssey, not so popular, no WiFi.

Update on where I am:  first FOE, can't beat him...

just bought Etrian and WOW awsome game.i thoguht i had to make the maps and play on them but i just have to make the maps and the levels are already made. the games is Definetly a sleeper. Some things would have made the game better but i think it's reasonable to tell expolorers they have to make there own maps how else would they get made right? this game takes the ease away from RPG's and works great i suggest anyone to buy it for there DS.

As much as I like those little annoying critters I'd take a pure, old-school meets new-school RPG experience of Etrian Odyssey anyday.

Character classes, a solid customization system, map-making, and great art direction. And add a fantasy makeover on top of that with a wonderful musical soundtrack than you got yourself a solid RPG experience at its truest form.

Pokemon's great....but like everyone says, it's for the kiddies. Etrian Odyssey is for the more mature RPG players.

I mean, yea Etrian Odyssey is a great single player game, I love it, and I think the single player is definitely going to be more deep than Pokemon, but the multiplayer in Pokemon is just way too good.  I mean, you get WiFi!

Either way, both games are great, and I suggest getting both of them.

i agree i just beat pokemon and it really had no story either. and the Wifi in Pokemon is kinda nerfed(means it's toned down or Useless) unless you got imediate friends you know and can add them. if they would have added random lvl 50 battles then the game would have been worlds better. Etrian is a single player experiance and so is Pokemon i wouldn't say either is for kids though cause i think Adults can play anything they want(it's kids who can't) Sure pokemon is more popular with kids but i think some kids might enjoy Etrian expecially if they never played a RPG ona console(cause it will spoil them and then without voice and asomo graphics they say it sucks lol) I think buying both is the best idea.

I can't imagine many of my friends having enough time to enjoy Etrian Odyssey.  Pokemon is one of those games you can just pick up and play.  Etrian Odyssey is different, you have to really be into the game, and play for at least half an hour every go.

I like Pokemon too, and I'm 40+ hours into the game on the Diamond version.

I'm not discrediting Pokemon at all. For what the game is for and the intended audience in which the game was made, Pokemon is in many ways a superior designed game. However, for more mature and hardcore RPG gamers who are looking for a true RPG experience, Etrian Odyssey is the better choice.

With that said, I agree with you, Etrian Odyssey is not for everyone, but that's because it was designed that way, for a niche crowd. Pokemon is too mainstream. It was designed to be more accessible. Young kids, teens, and even adults enjoy it. But Etrian Odyssey is designed around RPG veterans who like taking pleasure in torturing themselves playing through countless  hours of a hardcore video game that kicks their butt around.

Etrian Odyssey is not for the impatient or the casuals. It is hardcore to the bone, too much for RPG beginners, but a awesome experience for RPG veterans. But that's not to say that beginners shouldn't try it. I highly recommend this game to anyone. Who knows, maybe you'll get into it and become a fan?

On a related note, it is ironic that the Dragon Quest series is beloved by all ages in Japan, when in fact it is basically the exact same type of game as Etrian Odyssey is. It's a dungeoun crawler and the only major difference is the first-person perspective. Anyway, just a interesting note to think about.

Try not to get your guys killed all the time and maybe you'll make a profit.

So far, 3 of my party members have died once each and I've killed several FOEs already. It's really just knowing how to properly manage your party so that they don't get decimated in battle.

If you're only looking for cash, could always go back to the first floor and just farm for a while.

Better than me. So far, I'm only in the second floor. I've beaten two FOEs already...I'm grinding on the second floor right now and returning a lot to town and save...can't get cocky in this game, that's for sure.

The only thing I can say is GOOD LUCK, the second floor was hell for me but the experience I gained from it helped a whole lot.
