I can't imagine many of my friends having enough time to enjoy Etrian Odyssey. Pokemon is one of those games you can just pick up and play. Etrian Odyssey is different, you have to really be into the game, and play for at least half an hour every go.PharaohsVizier
I like Pokemon too, and I'm 40+ hours into the game on the Diamond version.
I'm not discrediting Pokemon at all. For what the game is for and the intended audience in which the game was made, Pokemon is in many ways a superior designed game. However, for more mature and hardcore RPG gamers who are looking for a true RPG experience, Etrian Odyssey is the better choice.
With that said, I agree with you, Etrian Odyssey is not for everyone, but that's because it was designed that way, for a niche crowd. Pokemon is too mainstream. It was designed to be more accessible. Young kids, teens, and even adults enjoy it. But Etrian Odyssey is designed around RPG veterans who like taking pleasure in torturing themselves playing through countless hours of a hardcore video game that kicks their butt around.
Etrian Odyssey is not for the impatient or the casuals. It is hardcore to the bone, too much for RPG beginners, but a awesome experience for RPG veterans. But that's not to say that beginners shouldn't try it. I highly recommend this game to anyone. Who knows, maybe you'll get into it and become a fan?
On a related note, it is ironic that the Dragon Quest series is beloved by all ages in Japan, when in fact it is basically the exact same type of game as Etrian Odyssey is. It's a dungeoun crawler and the only major difference is the first-person perspective. Anyway, just a interesting note to think about.
