Why is that even an issue? I've been gaming for over 25 years and have always played the more casual games. Not everyone that starts gaming is going to want to move onto the so called hardcore games. Your statement makes it seem like you are only welcoming women gamers as long as they are playing the games you think they should play which is absurd because everyone has different tastes. The great thing is that there is something for everyone on the Wii.My only issue with the female Wii gamers that I know is they won't cross the bridge from Wii Sports and Wii Fit. But I'm all for anyone who wants to play Wii, playing it.

idk, it just does. I wish they would make the attempt to cross, and at least check out the other side a little.
Hi my name is sakura and I'm new too this site, I'm also new to gaming I guess that makes me casual nonetheless I'm happy that I choice the wii as my 1st console. For years I wanted to get into gaming but backed away because all I saw was complex military war shooters even thou I new nintendo was different I still felt that games was too complex that is until the wii came out. Its motion controls was simple and easy to use now I fell like a true gamer now. I bought wii fit and I love it soooo much. Bought wiisports and I loveit to death-wm+ makes the controls even more easier to use. It seems like only nintendo is focusing on the female gamer these days and I truely respect them that, they captured a group of gamers that controls 44 percent of the market. As a female I certainly say that I love the wii andhope nintendo stays with my group, because sony and microsoft simple don't care for us! What do u think? Am I right? Do u agree? ayumi_miyazaki
Hey I'm also a female gamer and the Wii was the first console I ever owned. I wasn't new to gaming though. I played on my computer, but I understand what you mean entirely about intimidating console controls. Somehow, the computer keyboard and mouse were not intimidating even though they had more buttons because they were familiar. After 3 years with the Wii, I got a PS3, so I don't think it's entirely true that female Wii gamers aren't crossing bridges.
It's sad though that so many of us got the impression that video games are focused on guys and are only for guys to the point that it seems that only just now is anyone (Nintendo) focusing on the female gamer. I got this impression that video games were for guys from my awareness of the GameBoy, booth babes, war games, save-the-princess/girlfriend plot-lines, and all the scantily clad ridiculous unrealistic female characters in games. But there are tons of PC games that are very appealing to female gamers as well and I'm sorry that you missed out on those.
I think it was probably The Sims that turned me from a casual player to something more than that, because it got me to play more, to search the internet for guides and help, and to learn how to find and install user-created content. But it was Tomb Raider of all things that made me feel like I wasn't just an intruder in a man's domain. For the first time I saw a char that was female and was put into the role of a competent, intelligent, even witty main character. Usually women were just relegated to the roles of helpless kidnap-victims or eye-candy. And then here was Lara, exploring jungle ruins in her shorts and hiking boots or exploring the Arctic in her snow-pants and parka.
Anyway, if you liked Wii Fit but want some *real* exercise, you should check out EA Sports Active. It's an actual workout program that will make you lose weight and build muscles. Wii Fit is more casual feel-good exercise focused on improving your balance and breathing and stuff. Also you might want to check out Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon. Oh and happy to see you on the forums. :)
actually ps2 and 1 were geared towarda big audience as was snes and nes so this wasnt the first, gba as well and all nintendo handhelds
its nintendos goal , to get sales ,and make games for everyone this is why you dont see 50 thousand fpses on a shelf ,instead you see a balance of everything , (this is the same reason the following consoles sold well-nes -80 million snes 60 million ps1 100 million ps2 130 million wii)
so ya
Oh really? A handheld called the "GameBoy" was geared towards women? Only 6.7% of PS2 owners in Europe were female and only 11.1% in Japan according to Sony, and I doubt the NA numbers are much different.actually ps2 and 1 were geared towarda big audience as was snes and nes so this wasnt the first, gba as well and all nintendo handhelds

Actually the Gameboy (other than its name) had software that appealed to all types of gamers and has been a huge influence for the Wii and DS' wider appeal sensation. Nintendo has even made their core franchises more appealing to females by switching the damsel in distress archtype with Peach as the hero and Mario as the victim, the LoZ: ST gives Zelda proactive role side by side with Link, and games before it like Donkey Kong Country 3 where Dixie Kong was the lead character saving someone else.
Don't sell Nintendo short when it has come to appealing to the fairer sex because:
1) Just because they made the damsel in distress archtype popular in the industry does not mean its their fault. As the problem lies with too many games having this archtype and not the archtype itself its the other companies faults for overusing it. Nintendo has used both male and female roles saving opposite roles.
2) Nintendo along with revolutionaries like Will Wright have trailblazed any efforts that have been made in the past and very much the present to appeal more to female gamers.
As for female gamers not usually crossing the "bridge" to more hardcore experiences; there are female gamers like that in small numbers and they are such small numbers because again so many of the good hardcore games alienate the ladies for many reasons already outlined. Its been a boys club too long. I get the feeling we are missing out on some very creative ideas if we continue to alienate a crowd that has a very different perspective than what has been experienced in the gaming industry in general.

Girl gamers are cool. I goto school with a few of them (who are going to be designing them along side myself).
Unfortunately, women are still a smaller group of players that make up the entire bunch of us.... but the numbers are growing more and more.
I would just like to know what some of these girls look like (not here). Not to be ignorant, but the girls that game at my school are all weird. I mean, pretty much everyone is weird at my school.... but whatever. :P
Finally?!? Geez, girl, where have you been?!?
J/K:P
All joking aside, though, I'm glad you found a console you enjoy. I, too, am glad that Nintendo is actually catering to different demographics this gen other than the male teen. Hopefully Microsoft and Sony can learn a thing or two from Nintendo, 'cause as of now, I think they're losing some customers 'cause of their constant release of hyper-violent shooters.:P
Nice Try! ayumi_miyazaki but internet rule 16 states that there are no girls on the Internet.

This is what I would say if I haven't said it already in a clone thread.
The only game for women is one that can be played while in the kitchen, preferably one that works on their cooking skills.

Girl gamers are hot. I've actually discovered I can't have a relationship with a woman who isn't into gaming, it just doesn't work. Last girlfriend I had pointed at the PS2 and asked "Wanna play Mario?" *facepalm*
I'm happy that Nintendo brings in the girl gamers!
I love my Wii too, but you're really using a strong stereotype against Sony and Microsoft with the whole "focus on military shooters." Yeah, it sells during the holidays as a killer-app for the system's core group but sister, you ain't lived til you got some Viva Pinata injected in your veins. And Sony's doing it on their end too.
Since when did these "military shooters" only appeal to guys? I've played Halo with plenty of girls and some of them were beating everyone on the playlist. Same deal with F.E.A.R. and Call of Duty 4. My sister doesn't play videogames often, but for a few months she only played Oblivion. She hasn't played anything since, but still she spent over 100 hours in Oblivion.
And it isn't like the other publishers aren't trying to develop more casual gaming experiences. The last company that focused only on hardcore gamers for a console was Sega and they had to go third party in order to survive and lost a ton of their creativity in the process. MS and Sony know better than that and games like Viva Pinata and LittleBigPlanet should show you that.
Yeah, you're enjoying Wii Sports and Wii Fit and I've got nothing against that in any way, and I know some Wii fanboys are going to try and argue against everything I've posted, but they're also the same guys screaming in anger over the fact that they don't have enough quality shooters on the console. All I'm saying is you don't have to use a generalized argument or even the stereotype of 'too many shooters' to justify your purchase to anyone. You got a Wii. It's a great console. It has great games. So do the other two consoles. And they have better shooters than the Wii to boot.
every girl loves mario, mario kart, and Wii Sports. Plus, every girl remembers either SMB3 or SM64. What better console for girls?

I had Cooking Mama in mind while writing that hahaI don't know if I'd consider myself a "gamer" if I only play Wii Fit :S
I personally can't stand that stuff. Whatever happened to working out on DDR?
I do not think it was until this gen that real significant games were being made for females.
Before it was plaster the game in pink and give it to a no name developer to screw it up. Games geared toward girls should not just be prettier versions of preexisting video games normally geared toward boys. There are whole different concepts different than theA to B goals we usually see in games and they have to be explored to attract female gamers. Just like games geared at children should not just be little simpler versions of adult games. Children have their own interest that can be just as wholesome and engaging as the run of the mill AAA.

Do u agree? ayumi_miyazakiWell I'm glad you enjoying the Wii as it's a really great system, I hope you take the time to expand to other genres like adventure/platformer, fighter racer, rpg, horror, and 2D games(to name a few), It always good to get a taste of every type of game genre that you can get, anyway were happy to have you onboard as a follow Nintendo gamer:D.
I disagree about certain systems being for men and women. I disagree about the whole All X and Y consoles are Z type games. There are a lot of shooters on the HD systems like there are a lot of mini game things on the Wii, but there is more than just that. Games like Banjo Kazooie, Tales of Vesperia, Ratchet and Clank, Little Big Planet. RPG's have had strong female characters. Aeris from Final Fantasy 7 did play a major role as well as Terra Final Fantasy 6. Not all females charactersare revealing air heads. Quistis from Final Fantasy 8 might be "hot" or whatever buther character is also very smart. Rita from Tales ofVesperia is alsothe intelligent woman of the group. Control schems are not that hard once you get used to them. Since this is your first system, you don't have experience with th D-pad and or analog sticks. The first time I played Mario 64 I couldn't control it with an analog stick either, I didn't know how to gethim to move. I pushedon the D pad and nothing happened. It just takes a bit. It's like doing anything else. People who have never played a sport probably think it ishard, but after they practice, it isn't so bad.
Not every game uses every button on a controller, you are never pushing every button at the same time. Gaming is nothing to be afraid of.Most of the macho male crap is just developers joking around a bit. The only people who think gaming is a sausage fest is the media andpeople who think they are too"mature" to play a game that does not have blood. I am not trying to force you to play anything you don't want to, but don't make it out like the HD consoles are appealing to only a certain crowdbecause there are plenty of non shooter stuff on both of those systems. There is more of a stigma around women and gaming in general. Once youactually sit down and play a game and realize that even though it might seem"male oriented" at first, your opinion will change. If Super Princess peach is a girly game, well then you might as well give meeverthing else that would make me a full time girl.
Games are games, screw the stigma and have fun regardless of whatthe game is supposed to target.I wish you well inyour gaming venture and hope your mind opens a bit more to whatgames actually are vs what the media and reports say. It is a shame more women can't get involved and put an end to the stigma.
i think you are going by exceptions rather than norms. Viva pinata and LBP does not compensate in numbers and choices to NSMB, Deblob, LKS and so forth. Just like you say there are more and surely better shooters, there are simply more open inviting games on the wii. Metroid trilogy as good as it is, does not compensate for the lack of say Killzone quality of shooters on the wii(1 game a console does not make). Same goes the other way, LBP wont compensate not having WSR, NSMB, Mario Party 8 and such.MS and Sony do, but they do less than ninty and others in that front. They have better shooters?sure ,but not a single fitness group game that you can play at the other hand. So again Wii is indeed very different than Microsoft and PS3 .They cater to all audiences in a much more limited(and similar between them) than nintendo does.Note i dont fully agree they have better shooters, they have more. Same goes the other way. then you say, you met girls you play halo, and i met girls who play CS.Sure as hell true. but what are the ratios? scarce. Plenty of girls?sure.Out of hundreths of thousands of males tho. Yet nearly 49% of the wii gamers are female. Which is in an entirely different level.I love my Wii too, but you're really using a strong stereotype against Sony and Microsoft with the whole "focus on military shooters." Yeah, it sells during the holidays as a killer-app for the system's core group but sister, you ain't lived til you got some Viva Pinata injected in your veins. And Sony's doing it on their end too.

QFMFT. Seriously, it seems to me TC isn't even a girl with the whole stereotypical "I'm a girl and like all girls I'm not into violent war shooters I only like dancing and getting-fit games" I've seen a crapload of girls playing Halo 3, it's funny cause sometimes from their voice (no offense) I can't tell whether the person talking is a girl or a little boy (Once I referred to a boy by "she" until I realized he was a boy. Awkward..)I love my Wii too, but you're really using a strong stereotype against Sony and Microsoft with the whole "focus on military shooters." It kind of irks me to hear that a system has to be "simpler" to be more accessible to girls. TBH, the Wii wasn't designed to draw in a girl audience, it was designed to be more approachable for non-gamers. Being female has nothing to do with it.

It is a shame more women can't get involved and put an end to the stigma. gamenerd15I think you're kind of missing the point. Sure there are plenty of non-shooter stuff, but most of that has traditionally been aimed at children. Sure, you can still have a fun time playing it while not being a child, but it's AIMED at children, and takes into consideration what children enjoy and want to see. Ratchet & Clank is very clearly aimed at kids. Yes it is still fun to play as an adult and it's still a great game, but the humour is geared towards kids. Just one example. There are not a lot of women on the staff of many game developers. That's starting to change but it is still true. Is it any wonder that the games they produce then mostly appeal to guys? Let's face it: men have no clue what women want. :P So to think that these games that are made by guys are equally appealing to women is simply missing the picture... and it's assuming that women want whatever men want and have no opinions and tastes of their own. What men like isn't the neutral standard of games. There are always exceptions, but for example, most females don't like war games --- in many countries, women aren't even allowed to take on active military roles, to women are ostracised from that whole culture to begin with... obviously it's not going to appeal to them as much. That's not to say that if women could take on combat roles in the army they'd instantly all adore MW2. But the point is that the subject matter isn't as relevant to females as it is to males, so it's quite predictable that it would be less interesting. Just one example.
Seriously, it seems to me TC isn't even a girl Arbiterisl33t69Attitudes like this are why video game discussion forums are sausage fests. Guys just don't seem to be able to tolerate girls' gaming opinions and tastes without calling into question their femininity.
Nintendo has repeatedly said that they made the system to capitalise on two relatively untapped markets: female gamers and older gamers. They most definitely had women in mind when designing their games and the console. Also, it's very clear that they've been focused on the casual market. Well, casual gamers are over 70% female, so it's pretty much synonymous. When you're talking about a female gamer, you're almost always talking about a casual gamer, and when you're talking about a casual gamer, you're almost always talking about a female gamer. It kind of irks me to hear that a system has to be "simpler" to be more accessible to girls. TBH, the Wii wasn't designed to draw in a girl audience, it was designed to be more approachable for non-gamers. Being female has nothing to do with it.
