Well, I can't post links because I'm using Google Chrome, but The Pokemon Company told Nintendo Life website that they have recieved DS2 developement kits.

If you want the website search "DS2 Rumour is Rumour No More"

They said it's not going to be released for a while and they it's in the beginning stages of development.

I did a google search, I saw two different things. I'm sure it's in development, but who knows? I wonder how it will compare to the PSP.

Duh, now we wait. It could take 2 years for them to design the thing for all we know

The Wii was in devs hands, Nintendo devs hands, in 2005. We didn't get it for 1 1/2 years

It's common sense that they are making another handheld.

And I did read this a while ago. The only thing is, is it another DS? Or are they going back to Gameboy?

Also, it won't come out this year...

I recon we'll hear something about it this year at E3. Maybe a winter launch in Japan, (where pretty much everyone already owns a DS by now! lol) and everywhere else next year.

*sighs* *takes a deep breath, starts reading* that it's on development, everybody knows. it's been like that since the DS was released, just like they were planning the wii even before launching the gamecube. and same for the wii's successor.

I can`t wait for it! the motion mechanic seems cool! I hope it will work well, i can somewhat imagine a motion based pokemon game where the player would shake the system to throw a pokeball.

It's inevitable that Nintendo will make a new handheld successor to the DS..... It's only a matter of when they release it. I hope it isn't soon. The DS is still going very strong. Maybe in four years.

That's not entirely correct. Only thing the insider said was that he didn't expect it to be unveiled in March. "The first version" implies that the hardware is already pretty far in development and needs some minor to medium tweaks, kind of like a beta. Nintendo wouldn't be asking for feedback if they were only starting to design the DS2.

Oh, how must it suck to have bought any version of the DS recently.

The DS proved far more successful than the GBA. So I doubt they'll go back now.

It wouldn't make much sense to start distributing development kits, even unfinished ones, four years before launch.

Right, being late to the party is better then not attending at all. Good thing I never bought a DSi though. The Lite will always remain the superior model.

the DS has almost no game releases, especially compared to how it used to. I'm hoping for a release almost identical to the DS, remake mario sunshine, make a new castlevania and advance wars and I'll be very happy but I know that won't be what will happen, sunshine wasn't popular.

I give it November 2011. The DSi XL will be here soon, and like the useless Gameboy Micro, it won't last more than a year before the newest addition to the family comes to steal all the attention.

Too bad the XL is selling so well, and the DSi

people said the DSi is just another GBM and its sold over 17 million units (GBM sold only 2.5 million in 5 years)

Even if DS 2 comes out this year (although I doubt it), I still probably wouldn't buy it for 2 reasons. 1) There are still plenty of quality DS games that I haven't played. Meanwhile, there won't be too many quality games for the DS 2 yet. 2) Considering Nintendo's track record with handhelds, the first design isn't the one to get. The GBA SP was superior to the regular GBA, and the DS Lite is considered superior to the DS chunky.

I would rather wait a year or two for the second version DS 2, and continue to enjoy the DS 1 catalog.

So is there any proof beyond NL saying a Poke-Dev told them this?

Really? Like can we get a more official comment from the Poke-Dev?

Nintendo Life isn't grapsing at straws here, but its a big enough topic to get them attention

Of course they're working on new handhelds constantly and of course Pokemon company would be experimenting with it

But as the hardware isn't likely finished (unless Tegra rumors are true) then i doubt they have dev kits already and with all these 3rd parties saying what they want in the next ds makes me think they have no clue what is in the next ds. Therefore it can't be close to completion as third party devs still say they want things like the MH guy wanting better DS WiFi

I think the "semi-official" sources simply want to avoid risking their careers by leaking out more info. But there have been some small hints from a few insiders around the internet, you just need to look for them and not ask for too much beyond that. E3 is just around the corner. ;)

One of my missions for Game Developers Conference 2010 was to get more information on the successor to the Nintendo DS. I heard some cool rumblings about it in February and wanted to use the show to pester developers for confirmation. While nobody would tell me the name of the new handheld or the exact dimensions, I was able to extract some pretty cool information on the "DS2″.

The system has two screens, just like the DS, but they are bigger and higher resolution. I'm sure most of you could have guessed that, but the interesting part is that the gap between the two screens is negligible. Developers will be able to use them as one giant screen. At the very least, this will allow for some awesome cutscenes. It also has some potentially cool gameplay potential, with developers shifting the action from dual screen to single screen depending on the situation.

The next Nintendo handheld has an accelerometer. I blame the iPhone for this. Everything has to have an accelerometer now. Yesterday I bought a sandwich at the Moscone Center and it had an accelerometer in it.

The dev kit is similar in power to the GameCube. Developers that worked on GameCube or Wii games will find it easy to create with. I found this information unusual. The DS successor is rumored to use an Nvidia Tegra chip, while the GameCube and Wii used PowerPC based chips. The people familiar with the dev kit made it sound like there wasn't much of learning curve on the new system. I have to admit that I'm not familiar enough with Tegra, but I imagined developing for a system-on-a-chip platform to be different enough from developing for a CPU/GPU system. It could be ignorance on my part or maybe the DS2 uses something other than Tegra.

The developers I spoke with will be finished with their games before the end of the year. The Nintendo DS is still going strong and the company could delay the next handheld's release if it wanted to, but it looks like an E3 2010 announcement and a late 2010 release. That's all I have for now. Remember, none of this information came from Nintendo. It came from developers that claim to be working on the new system. Some of them I've met before, while some were introduced to me by people that knew I was looking for DS2 details. Hopefully none of them were hammered and thinking, "Hey! Let's mess with the guy trying to dig up Nintendo information."Raymond Padilla

True. And I think nowdays gamers are just getting tired of buying a new system every 5 years, and they would much rather keep buying games for the same one than have to stop and upgrade. I am pretty satisfied with my DS, personally I see no reason for Nintendo to make a new handheld. Just keep making new versions of the DS. :D

Then don't buy it. Simple as that. And honestly, I'd rather have them release a portable GC than countless DS interations.

Depends on whether the next console was backwards compatible or not. For some people (myself included), it's just as fun to play games from the last gen that got missed (for whatever reason) as it is to play games on the current system. Now if (and in this case) it DOES have backwards compatibility, it really depends on how you look at it. You could just take it as a loss, which is perfectly acceptable, or you could just enjoy it while it lasts and get the next console later in it's life (as was done by getting the DS lite/DSi this late anyway). Either one works, if you think about it.
