Gamespot reviewer gives Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey a 6/10

I'm sorry.. now I have played a lot of video games.. mostly rpgs (sadly :/)Now I havn't played a lot of shin megami tensei games .. in fact devil survivor kinda bored me a little bit (looking forward to stepping back into it though..) either way though I'm sure many will agree Strange Journey is pretty damn epic and a damn fine game in itself that doesn't deserve anywhere near a 6/10.. from what i can see this has been one of the first and only reviews even under 8/10 by a "respected?" critic.

Someone had to be smoking something..

No Western reviewer will ever get any Shin Megami Tensei game rated correctly.

I can't say I'm surprised, considering the score the Persona port received. I'm twenty-some hours in and loving it so far.Definitelyone of my favorite DS games.

It's still a person's opinion though, and the person who reviewed it happens to be a big SMT fan (and also reviewed Devil Survivor) and didn't enjoy it as much as some other people might have. That doesn't mean his opinion is any less valid.

Personally, I've played Strange Journey and I still think Devil Survivor was much much better. I know the two can't really compare, but I wasn't exactly blown away by Strange Journey (story or gameplay.)

It shows that Lark is a big fan of the Shin Megami Tensei series, so there's no reason for him to score the game low unless he actually thought it deserved the score.

but as ive said in other threads, he fails to mention numerous positive gameplay mechanics that really makes the game atleast worth playing to begin with and not just for dedicated fans of the series

Those positive points are maybe not that positive to him. You judging him as a professional reviewer is simply based on your opinion of the game itself. You don't look at the matter as such that some things you may like about the game Lark doesn't like. That's part of the "it's his opinion" fact. He, as a professional reviewer, gave the game the score he felt it deserves.

I don't remember whether it won or not, but GS are bigger fans of JRPGs than most other Western critics I've seen, so I'm grateful for that. Lark is, for instance, a bit SMT fan.

Completely understand that it is an opinion.. all reviews are ..

BUT!

the thing that bugs me is that sadly a good portion of the gamers in the US unfortunately look to gamespot for a professional review before they go out and buy a game without even taking a second glance at others.. Maybe none of you I'm sure cuz we all know gamespot can be a little harsh sometimes.. but its kinda sad to know that a good chunk of people (mostly tards none the less) will choose to pass this great game over based on that review

Literally in like 3 different forums i counted a good 40-50 people who stupidly stated " Im waiting for the gamespot review to try/buy" ...

True, but the point I was trying to get across was that the only way the score wouldn't be his general opinion is: a) if he's against the genre (no) b) if he's against the series (no again) or c) if he's against the system (Devil's Survivor got a 9.0, so no once more). From all of these points, you can see that this really is his opinion of how the game holds up to other games in the genre.

Guys, it's a review, also known as an OPINION. Most of us already have the game and are throughly enjoying it, so why should it bother you that one person doesn't hold the same OPINION as you on a particular game. It's not like him scoring the game under your expected score magically makes the game you've been enjoying for hours upon hours unplayable, does it?

i'm 20hrs in to the game and i'm loving it!
