Usually, I buy games from gamestop. Whenever I buy, I notice some part that isn't exactly new...

The instruction manual is bent and torn slightly. and the case is scratched under the sealing plastic.

Aren't these signs of a used then sealed game?...

When I purchase something new, I don't want to spend 50+ dollars on a used game.

I have also heard that some people purchase new ds games that were upside down in the case.

Is it possible that gamestop is selling us used games at full price?

Yes, they sell used games as new

They are a shady and disreputable retailer and no one should shop there

i just found out that circuit city has a 'gamers club' which offers 10% off on all games and accessories. any avid gamer could use this. its only $20 bucks and it last for an entire year. and we know how big 09 will be for all platforms, so if you wanna drop gamestop, circuit city has some very nice offerings. i joined!!!

If the game is sealed, its new. Bent manuals, upside down carts, and other such issues are often factory errors. If its unsealed being sold as new then I'd be wary. Back when I worked at EB/Gamestop, I borrowed out the unsealed floor copy of Mass Effect right after it came out.

But as for "used sealed" games, I'm gonna call bull,  we sure as hell didn't have some magic resealing device in the backroom.

They've been doing it for years.

Sometimes they do but I only buy used games from them, so it's not a problem for me.

Sometimes they have to open a new game to use its case as a display. Then they'll take the new disc and put it in that case and reseal it when you buy it. I remember I bought Metroid Prime 3 used and it was fully sealed and never opened but the instuction manual was bent up at the top right corner.

Yeah its not possible that things are damaged during production, or like Plasma said you get the display copy, granted there are a few scumbag employees who would do something like take a game play it and return it. However you can't condemm all employees and a franchise for a few bad apples. I for one have never gotten a damaged game from GS.

Agreed, I try not to shop there anymore after my experience with buying Dragon Quest IV new for 40 bucks, and they take it out of an envelope, put it in the game box from the display with this big fat price sticker on it, and give it to me. Im not sure if they've noticed, but that's not new.

Unfortunately it's the only store near me that sells games at their actual retail prices (theres another place, but they're still selling mariokart DS for 45 bucks, and warioware for 60), but I'd gladly go a little further to shop somewhere better.

Once at Gamestop, they gave me a display case and just put the game inside. The case was extremely scratched and the manual was disgusting. Bad experiences all around. Find another place to shop.

Given that many other retailers are cheaper than Gamestop, I only go to one when I'm looking for an older game that is no longer available to see if I can find a used copy.  Because, I'd rather buy from Gamestop than some punk on eBay.

From these comments I guess I'm lucky we don't have Gamestop in Aus.
We have EB and I've never had bad experiences before.
Oh crap I just realised something. I bought Zack & Wiki 2 weeks ago from Dicksmith and it wasn't sealed. I guess I just got ripped off, yeah?

I'm not sure if you got 'ripped off' as such but it's preferable for everything to be sealed. I'd say stay away from Dick Smith in future mate.

I'm from Aus too and most of the games I have bought from EB are still sealed. The only exception was when I bought RE4 - they had the disc and manual stored seperately and put it all together when I took the display case to the counter. I thought it was odd but I couldn't be bothered arguing it and going somewhere else (end of a long day and I just wanted to get out of there).

I haven't gone to EB since though - I'd recommend variety stores like K-Mart, Big W, Target etc. Their stuff is always sealed and the prices tend to be a tad cheaper too. Also, JB Hi-Fi have everything sealed with good prices and rare games (only place I could find Okami and No More Heroes).

If it doesn't come with the factory plastic around it, it is a used game... and don't let them tell you otherwise. Anyone that has bought a game from them that doesn't have the factory seal on it and paid new... you are the definition of gullible. EDIT: And it is easy to tell the difference between factory sealed and repackaged...

Oh and one more thing... EB Games = Gamestop... Gamestop bought them out in 2005... they are the same retailer - different banner. Link to proof

You people sound as if opening up the game box makes the game used. It doesn't. EB/Gamestop storing the games seperate from the case doesn't make the game used. The definition of a used game is a game that has already been played. As long as you're the first to play that copy of a game, then it isn't used, regardless of whether it was in its box or not.

Things do indeed get damaned during production :) I saw a GTA4 game, straight out of the box from UPS with the label bent in half.. One of the funniest things I've ever seen.

You should be able to tell from the plastic wrap if it's new. The reseal plastic is very different.

And I've bought some new ds games where the cartridge was upside down. It's just factory error.

not necessarily.

I've bought "new but open" games from them before. my reasoning was simple: The "new" copy was actually cheaper or the same price as the "used" ones were, and they were in better condition. they really need to work on their pricing strategies

They're not going out of business

They have too many stores, to correct the problem they're shutting down some stores and liquidating what's in those stores.

The majority of stores plus online sales will be perfectly fine

While it might not technically be used, it's certainly not new either.  If you can't return it to the store because it's been opened, then they better not be selling them to you in that condition.

Wrong

New means sealed

EB, Gamestop reseal used games and sell open games as new.

That is wrong, they're shady

Agreed. If it is open (ie: not in manufacturer packaging) then at best it is USED: in mint condition. Anyone that believes differently is the type of person they are trying to prey on.

i have grown to hate the company gamestop, but they are just about the only real game company left that sells new or used games, I still wont forget when some people working at a gamestop once said that its like working for Nazi's
