It seems everyone & their grandmother got a Wii this holiday season. People that dont even really like video games even. Which is great & all, but I cant help but wonder what this means for the console.

It def seems the coolness factor has worn off & everyone else is now jumping on the bandwagon. Usually when that happens, nomatter what it is, I'm always a little concerned because it usually means that things are on the downturn.

It sells out constantly every week and is the fastest selling console in history. I don't see your logic.

I'm surprized it took this long for video games to reach a wider audience.

If you purchased the Wii to add to your "cool" factor then you already lost the battle.

Why on Earth would more people than ever buying the Wii mean that it's on the downturn?

You can't "jump the shark" seeing as how this is what has been happening since the Wii came out. EVERYONE is buying it...not just gamers. Why do you think its so hard to find?

Jumped the shark? Buddy, the Wii *is* the shark in a sea full of fish. But it's one of those anime shark with hooks for eyes. And a big smile. And other things that make it look like the cutest animal on the planet so that everyone goes "awwww, how adorable" when they see it. Like it or not but the Wii is the new "it". As others have mentioned, it sells out everywhere. It sold a record-shattering 2 million units in november alone. How the hell can you say it's on the downturn? I will admit that Nintendo has had its worst holiday season in a good while though, but that's it.

At this point I'm half suspecting that Nintendo purposely threw this holiday season just to say to its competitors, "See? We can sit on our asses and do nothing and we still outsell all of you combined. Give up now or be crushed."

And then Reggie comes out and roundhouse kicks anyone who complains.

:D Who knows... Not that Nintendo needs that kind of laziness as they are mopping the floor with their sweat-stained competition regardless. But yeah, I can see their execs sitting back in their chairs made of solid gold and epic win plotting such strategies. Saving their game budgets for buying out Thailand or some other dastardly evil scheme and proving to both Microsoft and Sony how it's done at the same time...

Just to clarify, "jumping the shark" refers to an episode of Happy Days where the Foz jumps a shark tank on his motorcycle. The term has come to identify when something lives long enough to become a parody of itself. The Wii as a console hasn't changed since the day it was released, therefore the Wii in itself cannot "jump the shark". Now the concept of motion based controls can and will "jump the shark". An example of this would placing motion plus sensors on every extremity for more the involved Wii Sports Varsity. Yes that would be a triple backflip over the proverbial shark tank, but it wouldn't be the Wii. I can see individual games "jumping the shark" by taking the motion based control too far. I can also see M$ and Sony taking a jump with there stab at motion controls. The Wii is like the ipod. The beauty is in the simplicity. Wii Sports Tennis is a huge hit with everyone because it is simple. Top Spin is horrible because it is too complex. The Wii will only fail when it tries to get too clever for itself. My guess is that the next generation nintendo console is going to flop, unless they simply upgrade the computing power for better graphics.

The second line of this is just too funny. :) I have the mind of an 12 year old. And on topic: are you insane? How does the coolness factor wear off, but everyone still buys wiis?

Whoa Whoa Whoa. The Fonz did not jump a shark tank on his motorcycle. He jumped a shark in a pen in the ocean on water skis. If you're going to explain the history at least do it correctly.

Other than that I agree with you totally.

Although that is possible, I'm fairly sure that they wouldn't do it for that reason. Although it still was an act of laziness on Nintendo's part.

The Wii appeals to the casual gamer more than the hardcore gamer. It still has some stuff for the hardcore gamer. Because, until recently, it was the cheapest next Gen console, everybody (and their mother) wanted it. Whether or not it is "good" that it appeals to the casual gamer so much or not, it certainly makes it more popular, which means it hasnt jumped the shark.

I don't see how it has jumped the shark. in fact, i don't even think that any system this generation has come remotely close to jumping the shark. you want jumping the shark? There would have to be another Power Glove for that to happen.

Wii hasn't jumped the shark and don't mistake what the big N want from you and don't think Microsoft or Sony give a crap either, they'd drop their users at the drop of a tack if they believe they can compete with Wii now. Game wise Nintendo may have counted on better third party support then the crap that was given but that's not been the case.

Okay so people have pointed out that it isn't jumping the shark and that it doesn't make sense that growing popularity itself is a sign of a coming downturn. What they haven't pointed out is that, if everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, the coolness factor has clearly not worn off (or else they wouldn't be jumping on the bandwagon, a metaphor for following the trend of popular opinion.) I feel I have added something to this discussion!

I would have actually loved if the Saturn or Dreamcast would have sold near as many systems as the Wii did and still does. Those were my favorite consoles. So anyway, it's not a bad thing if a system becomes popular.

wii and 360 or wii or 360 alone is the best console this gen , no questions asked, 360s got the graphical and game arena covered wii gots the game and control area covered , i own all 3 and i play wii and 360 more then ps3,

so ya wii never lost its coolness or fun factor nor has 360

they are well balanced, they offer fps and other games and they come dirt cheaP, MUCH MORE CHEAPER THEN THE OTHER CORNER and they both have exceptionally well backwards capabilities, options and they now have their own specailly made online download games not just console classics or old xbox/n64 games, they have communty /small games, fun ones, no body does it better, i cant count the games i own for each on one hand or 2 ,

i got like 40-70 games for wii and 40-50 games for my 360 and only 15 for ps3 ,

There is absolutely no reason to believe that, whatsoever. Nintendo knows they can make crap games (wii music) or cheap copies (Animal Crossing) and make more money. Why would they go out of their way to make a hard core title when they can sit back and make money with very little work?

I think the wii is a good system. Its practicaly a must have for everyday families. But i remember hearing some percentage a couple monthes ago that over 70% of wii's are not played every day. So i think that they are slowly losing there appeal. especially to non gamers.
