what if, instead of making more REALISTIC graphics, they used the n64 color style as an art style ( lots of solid looking things ) and they just made it look... better. not necessarily more detailed on features, but more detailed shape, while saving the same bold colors. i've been playing ocarina of time, and i like the way it looks from an artistic standpoint, despite the graphics themselves being not up to par with todays standards. i just think that since we're playing VIDEO GAMES, they should look like VIDEO GAMES, not necessarily like the real world.

an example i guess would be... SM64 as opposed to SM64 DS. granted the GRAPHICAL standing doesnt change much, but you can tell that its changed. im thinking something like that but 10 fold. basically i want it to be cartoony, but not cel shaded.

An example in todays standards would be SMG. Instead of lets say Twilight princess?

I'd love that. The cartoony look of past games appeals to me. I noticed this while playing Melee. Even though Link has had a significant graphical update, the cartoony style he had in Melee was better.

yea basically, brawl went overboard... they gave mario's trousers stiching, that is not needed. i jsut want... graphics, not reality. the only instance in which i like "real life graphics" are racing games

Tell that to the Xbox 360 and the PS3 and see how they follow up on that.

Actually just tell that to every developer. I bet it will work ;)

Especially cause no one really pays attention to that or cares for that matter. It's too insignificant.

I love TF2's graphics. That's what shooters should like like. I always preferred the graphics of the N64.

The only drawback I see in the wii is graphics or lack thereof. That said I am a happy wii owner amongst other consoles. Slight boo on nintendo though for non lovely graphics. Go ahead hate me!

I really feel like platformers and 3D adventure games almost have to be in a cartoony style. I mean the great thing about them is the ability to climb or jump on anything, which if everything was realistic wouldn't happen. I'm not sure why there can't be a game with realistic graphics and the ability to climb all over things, but I really haven't seen any. For example, in Windwaker and OOT you could really climb all over the roofs of houses and stuff and in Twilight Princess that was definitly not the case. I don't think thats its a coincidence that there seem to be less of this type of game while graphics are getting more and more realistic.

Also, how weird would Mario feel with realistic art style?

I guess what both duffman and I want - I think - is for the figures/models/environment to have a sort of metonymy to them. We don't need stitching in overalls to know that they are overalls, fire doesn't need to behave like real fire, just color it red, orange and yellow and we get the idea, a tree's leaves don't need to be animated separately - the trees in SM64 are a perfect example of this. We need to keep the game a game and stop trying to make it real, it won't ever be.
