How hard is it to make a decent FPS for the Wii?

Red Steel stank, as did Far Cry: Vengeance, Call of Duty 3 was good, MoH: Vanguard will prob stink. Do we have to wait until Metroid Prime 3 comes out for a decent FPS?

I enjoyed playing Halo on the Xbox, would be great to see something similar on the Wii (and with online and with textures that don't make want you to hurl the controller at the television)

How difficult can it be to produce something that's not a piece of dog turd?

I just think that developers are still getting their feet wet, so they're probably not going to put out astonishing games right out of the gate, especially considering how differently the Wii works. Just wait, we'll see some good shooters come out for the Wii

Yeah I think developers are just putting out shooters right away to make some quick cash. Just wait a couple of months and we should see more decent shooters. MP3 is going to be amazing. Especially if it has online wi-fi.

Metroid Prime is not an FPS. Please. It' a platformer with very simple shooting elements, just like the SNES-titles, but happens to be in first perspective, but it's definatly not what is generally called a FPS. I expected FPS-fun when I bought MP and MP:H and was disappointed twice. So - I imagine it's quite easy to make a decent FPS for the Wii. The problem is, it's always easier to make Brain Training XD 2010 Deluxe 2 than a FPS for this system. And porting one, which is so much cheaper (all of them have been ports, except for red steel, which just didnt get enough time), doesn't work because as far as I understood it, the Wii ports all look horribly because the Wii (or the developers) can't handle games based on directX.

How can you even say that Metroid Prime and it's later renditions aren't FPS??? The entire game is shooting...from the FIRST PERSON perspective! seriously.

Well if they gave Red Steel CoD3's controls it would be a somewhat decent game at least, given another month for debugging. Potential is there, just not met.

Succes in Metroid Prime is not determined by the way you interact with enemies, but rather by orientiation, platforming and interaction with the environment; new weapons for example barely effect the way you fight, but the way you travel. The "prime"-series merely translates the classic metroid-gameplay (including it's painful backtracking) into the first person perspective. That's fine in it's own right, but people who didn't like the classic Metroids but like FPS won't like "Prime". Pong won't become a FPS if you put it in first perspective, either.

I think you nailed it right on the head.  I loved the classic Metroid games and Metroid Prime is just Metroid translated into 3D.  When people talk about FPS they are thinking of Halo, Gears of War, Half Life, and the many many other games like them.  Metroid Prime has similarities to FPS but it simplifies combat (auto aiming lock on function) and focuses a lot more on challenging the environment.

Well all they need to do is look back on the years and years of good FPS with motion controls and they'd have it.

Oh wait, this is the first year they're doing it.
It'll be better in 2007.

Personally I want something more then  Halo, Halo is a boring game now that's only kept alive by multiplayer, everything else in that game is dead.
Hopefully Nintendo will be able to do something more then just giving us a new playground.

Since there have been no announcements yet about any other FPS, Metroid will probably be the only good FPS at that time, but its gonna kick like an angry kangaroo.....that had a few too many........and is angry because no one gave a good method on how to get a Wii teo freakin days before Christmas.

First off, gears of war isn't an FPS.  and yea i would say metroid prime is like a FP adventure game. just like oblivion is an rpg, but is simplified so much and made a certain way that its pretty much a FP action/adventure game, not an rpg.

You know I have been thinking about this for sometime. I played Call of Duty 3, and I was quite pleased with the controls and I could see how well it could work.Call of Duty 3 was to busy and the textures were washy, because it was ported from 360 it also suffered from frame rate issues. The Wii needs one truely great FPS to be ported before Developers will make great FPS games for it. The Wii controller works like a mouse so why not port a PC game to the Wii, one that hasnt been sent to console and is a little older so the graphics match up with Wii.

This got me to thinking and I play a lot of FPS gameson my PC and have for a long time, and I think a proper port of a PC game could be Just what the Wii needs to start the ball rolling. One game that I feel could make the transition to Wii very easily and be extremely accessible is No One Lives Forever 2. The game play is stealth and intense action would make it ideal. Also the graphics are still good and would fit perfectly for the Wii. The Coop Multiplayer and Deathmatch and Doomsday mode are perfect for small 16 player matches. NOLF2 is such a good game I play it single and multiplayer over many new games. It is a game like NOLF2 that would work well on the Wii. Also multiplayer is a must, I think once Nintendo has working Online Multiplayer developers will be more likely to make original FPS games for the system. Until then I think we are going to suffer with bad ports from other consoles.

I think No One Lives Forever 2 for the Wii would be a great game and save Wii from its boring FPS exsistance, and the Wii needs internet play before any FPS games will be truely successful.

I stand corrected, I carelessly threw in Gears of War as FPS but it's not.  A good port of Half Life 2 for the Wii would be pretty sweet but in the end it's all about how much effort the developers are willing to put into it.  Eventually someone will do the system justice, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I know the official genre, but the only reason they substituted "shooter" with "adventure" is because it's more of a free flowing game with a large open land to explore. They wanted to make it more appealing with the use of a different name. Aside from technicalities, it's still a FPS.

Umm no it's an adventure game, you find artifacts and you have a lot of platforming with hardly any shooting skill. It's the EXACT same things as Super Metriod only in FIRST PERSON.

GOW controls like an FPS but its from a 3rd person perspective, I dunno what to call it but to me it played more like an FPS, than a 3rd person adventure game.

Whats troubling about this FPS talk is the fact that the Wii is only getting 2 fps's for the first half of next year, MP3 and MoH. I don't think we're gonna see a original, kick ass, Wii exclusive, non-Metroid, online mp FPS for the Wii for a long time... if not ever...

Metroid Prime is an action adventure game with a first person perspective so its not a FPS.

GoW is a third person shooter with the similar third person perspective as RE4.

As for a FPS for the Wii, it will take sum time to really have the developers come out with a quality FPS. So for now i could care less about FPS.

Hm... you are not very informed.  Red Steel recieved mixed reviews, but it was unanimous that if the game had more time it would have been much better.  Also, Far Cry i think had decent controls (although that was the only thing good about it).

And your biggest misinformation is that Vanguard will suck.  Multiple sources have stated that it's going to be better than CoD3 and said that it has better controls (and graphics).

I dont think the Wii will have any outstanding FPS (Metroid Prime aside), but there will be improvements.  What do you expect when it's been only 3.5 months?

Leave him, people like to complain and bash things because it makes them feel better. If they would think a little, they would see that Ubis' attempt at making FPS wasn't a failure, but a way to experiment this great console, a step closer to a great shooter on the Wii.

The reason the FPS suck for wii right now is because they are making the cross hair move within the screen instead of staying in the center and having your area of vision move.....

There is a heavy incentive to put an FPS game on PC or 360. Even against stiff competition, a publisher makes more money by targeting the systems the "FPS buying" audience tend to own than they do by focusing on making the best FPS possible on a Nintendo system.

Like it or not, publishers have decided "people don't buy FPS games on the Wii" - so they don't budget the millions upon millions that a game like Halo gets for development. Because of this, instead of getting a polished game we'll play for years, we get a mediocre game like Red Steel.

The first decent "FPS" will be Metroid Prime 3 - however the multiplayer will either suck or be nonexistant, simply because of the nature of the game. When Nintendo launches competitive online gaming on the Wii, we might see a move to have an FPS on the system, but we'll see. Unfortunatly, other systems harbor that audience - I think if we peaked into a publishers office we'd see the market reserach showing that even a solid FPS would sell worse on the Wii than a compeating system (PC / 360) which prevents it from getting the "RE4 treatment" on the Wii.

I had some ideas for FPS games on the Wii.  It would allow some fun multiplayer PvP.

This one aspect is that while you drive a vehicle, if you accidentally or intentionally jerk the Wii-mote and nunchuck back, while positioned like you are driving, you will break the steering wheel off.  So, you are driving along and that incidentally happens, now your vehicle is out of control.  Otherwise, you park the vehicle at the edge of a cliff pointing out, rip the steering wheel off and leave it, and the next player may try to take the vehicle and go right after you only to drive off the cliff.

I dunno how Red Steel is or Far Cry (though most likely it's bad) but Call of Duty is actually a pretty solid game and you can't automatically judge Medal of Honor based on those games (especially with its positive previews). So i don't agree with you on that, and i don't think it's that hard to make a decent FPS, developers just haven't found the right formula... and Gamespot calls Metroid Prime 3 a sci-fi first person shooter... so there

I think the FPS games would do better if they allowed you to use the classic controller instead of the WII remote. Have a normal dual analog control scheme but use the remote for other gimmicks besides shooting.

I prefer it that way, I always hated the spinning platform thing. Its one big reason I have never been a fan of FPS, but in order to make everyone happy the could make a button for screen movement, instead of the crosshairs moving the screen. My question is how people are saying this will suck and that will suck with no evidence. Like Metroid Prime there hasnt even been any confirmation of multiplayer and people are saying that it will suck. I mean what are you people on that leads you to believe that you can see the future.

Nintendo is still working on it, especially with Metroid Prime: Corruption.  I'm sure that Nintendo is learning from the mistakes of Red Steel and Far Cry (and other Wii FPSs I didn't mention).

I do believe that Nintendo is going the right direction trying to improve the overall experience of FPSs with the Wii controls.  Soon, it will be flawless, and 3rd parties will follow along.  If there is a Red Steel 2, it should be as perfect as our expectations for the first one.

Like what everyone else said. They need time to learn the system. My guess is those 2 FPS's were rushed by Nintendo to be made as launch games.

[QUOTE="adgdragon"]The reason the FPS suck for wii right now is because they are making the cross hair move within the screen instead of staying in the center and having your area of vision move.....

I prefer the crosshairs floating around the screen far more than it being fixed in the center of the screen. However for the people who dont want to use the crosshairs to push th e screen I say use a button, or the nunchuk to control the screens movement.
