I just had a thought about Wii FPS controls.

I'd say the biggest complaint (if any) about the way FPS's control on the wii, is that the pointer uses a dead zone and isn't like a mouse. When turning with a mouse, when the cursor hits the edge of the pad, you just pick the mouse up, place it back on the other side of the pad, and move again. When turning with the wiimote, you have to deal with the dead zone. It is kind of a hassle despite it being much better than dual analog.

Still, the wii uses an on-screen cursor, and I think anyone would be lying if they didn't look at Red Steel's first preview back in early 06 and see 'better than mouse' like possibilities.

So, while I was playing SMG, it hit me. A move camera button!

You see, in SMG when you go to a dome and are looking at the galaxies, you can move your view by holding down A and drawing the cursor along the screen. Now what if this were applied to a FPS like Red Steel.

Imagine you were playing Red Steel and moving the cursor didn't turn you. But, if you were holding C (C for camera) then you could run the pointer across the screen to turn. Once you hit the edge of the screen, let go of C, move the cursor back to the other side, and hold C again and repeat until you have turned as much as you want. And of course, you can still shoot while turning.

It's like MPH on the DS. You only turn if your touching the touch screen. And if you want to turn further, you simply pick up the stylus and run across the screen again (even though one run across is like 380 degrees or something in MPH).

I don't know about you, but this seems like a much more manageable system to me. It would take some getting used to at first because were used to the dead zone now, but the dead zone took some getting used to at first as well.

I think the current FPS aren't bad, and your method might confuse a lot of people

Just go to the weather or news channel and move the globe around. That's sorta what I mean. Just think of the way you turn in MPH. Think of the cusor as your stylus, and C button as pressing the touch screen.

Involving the C button in this would make it more unintuitive I think.

Yup, fps controls have mostly been fixed to the point that its better than dual analog. Think MP3 and MoH 2

Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy with how FPS controls have evolved on the wii, but it's still not up to PC's par quite yet. You still, even in MP3 and MOH:H2, turn very slowly. With the PC, it's usually 1 and a half swipes across the mouse, maybe less, to do a 180.

Just dump the bounding box. If you move the curser, you move your camera. Let go of C, and moving the curser no longer moves the camera. In MPH one swipe across the touch screen turns you more than 180 degrees. The wiimote could do this. You would have the turning speed of the mouse/touch screen with the speed and accuracy of the wiimote. I honestly think it would be a simpiler system.

why not have it the other way around? since eveyone is seemingly pretty comfortable with the concept of the box, it would be actually better if they kept that, and that button would be for aiming without camera interaction.

Then why use the box at all? If the cursor is not moving, then the camera is not moving no matter how close to the edge of the screen you are. If you want to aim on the screen without turning, just let go of C.

because people are used to it, that way it would be more intuitive that way. Either i really like it, hope devs adapt your idea :)

I get the idea and think it's good. The only problem i'd have is you would have to hold down a button to explore. In a game like Metroid this could become cumbersome. Also, it would feel more intuitive on the Wii-mote. I've always thought they needed another "lower" face button next to the A button. Oh well, maybe for Wii 2.

On the other hand, I do think your idea could work beautifully as the camera in a third person game. Imagine controlling the invironment in a game Like Galaxy the way you do the Globe on the Wii weather channel. So smooth, if done correctly.

Good idea. I personally don't mind the WiiMote FPS controls and don't really notice it. Hopefully it will be even better on Nintendos next console but I personally don't mind it and I prefer the "motion" more than the clas.sic mouse or right analog way of aiming.

Aiming's not the issue. Turning is.

Yeah I agree with you. The aiming in that makes the game very immersive.

Not at all trying to put your post down or anything, but myself and others have came up with the same idea b4, so your not the first to think of this idea. However, this was b4 we saw Medal of Honor. A friend of mine had Medal of Honor, and I got my chance to play it. I could pretty much configure it the way I wanted, and turning speed wasn't a problem. Is there possibly a better method? When is there not? I think people were satisfied though for the most part.

Aiming's not the issue. Turning is.

Again that was not a problem in MoH: H2. It takes about 5 seconds to find your sensitivity in aiming in the game then your good to go.

The only thing they need to imrpove with the controls in MoH: H2 is the sniping zoom, meleeing, and throwing grenades. The reticule is too big but again the aiming was better than anything on a console and easily rivaled with PC games.
