First off, they're a billion dollar company who make a profit on EVERY single piece of hardware and software sold. There is really no excuse for us to have such a minimalistic online experience. No voice chat? Why? It's what makes online so fun. The discussion of tactics in team games, the banter that goes on during a fight...

I can't see any logic in Nintendo'sFriends Codes either. It seems asstupid to me as using a password-based save system when you havememory right in front of you waiting to be filled up. It makes NO sense. So, one of the reasons why they're in place is to protect children from playing with people they don't know, right? Well, what harm can playing with strangers possibly do whenyou can't actually comminicate in-game anyway?

As of now,the PSP has a better online experience than the Wii, and that's just plain embarrassing. If they can't do Voice chat for whatever reason, then they should at least release a USB keyboard. Because, as it is, you may as well be playing against an AI. For gods sake Nintendo, get your act together.

I agree they need to step up the online game, but I dont know about voice chat, me personally, im 23, and I used to play socom 2 online, and it gets real annoying listening to kids not even old enough to drive try and be internet tough guys. The mouth running and fake internet thugs get real annoying real quick, and was actually the reason I stopped playing socom online

I'm complaining because it's cheap and, with all the money Nintendo are making we should be getting more. Online on the PSP is free, and on some games you have lobby's and voice chat. The PSN is also free, and you can download demo's trailers, and film clips. THAT is why I'm complaining. Nintendo have the worst 'free' online service, yet they're the only ones who make a profit on every single time someone buys one of their products.

I agree. Sony has a great online service and it's free. Microsoft has an amazing online service and it's only $50 a year. There is no excuse except for their own laziness and cheapness.

Nintendo is the most stubborn and greediest gaming company by far. Not only are they overcharging for the their system (instead of selling at a loss like everyone else), they refuse to provide a decent online service, theyre-release their hardware and software tons times, and refuse to give gamers what they beg for like a hard drive for the Wii or DVD playback.

Although I love Nintendo for all the great games they develop/publish and all the amazing idea they bring to the industry, the company has me pulling out my hair do to their stubborness. This is in part why I refuse to buy only Nintendo products from now on. I've owned every Sony system thus far and plan to pick up the PS3 when the 80GB version releases. Nintendo's attempt to provide a comprehensive online service and experience for hardcore gamers is laughable.

And I bet all of you defending Nintendo's online have never played online with the 360, PS3, or even the PSP. If you had you'd realize how horrible of a job Nintendo is doing.

Id pay a fee if it used System Based Screen Names and a headset. Half the reason im going Wii60.

oh and to the poster above me

F***ing High Five that may be the most intelligent thing i have read on the Wii Boards in their existence thusfar. Thanks.

And to all of you haters, Sony Has a Better Online Experience and its

Oh? Completley free! oh and they have had it since DAY 1. Day 1, not this "6 months and Pokemon!" load of bollocks.

The games are good and all but nintendo just needs to start opening up their eyes a little. Yeah they've given the world a great controller, Miis, and some of the greatest and most memorable franchises ever, Short of that, their actual console is nothing to write home about.

GD i've been wanting to get that off my chest for awhile.

If you want to play online, play on PC. That's my philosophy. I'm not impressed at all on any online services like Xbox Live or PSN or even the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connectionsince I play online since in the late 90s on PC. Guess what nothing is free since you have to pay on the internet connection unless you're still with the 56K.

All I want online is Super Smash Bros Brawl. I might play on Battalion Wars 2 but SSBB is my top 1. Even if it's not online, I would still buy SSBB. I'm not a snobby gamer that everything should/must be online.

I don't really have a comment for the microphones as I wouldn't want one if they came out, but what if an 8 year old is playing and they know how to turn parental controls off, they have a mic and they meet a 20 year old who starts swearing and talking about inapropriate reasons. Nintendo has their reasons to release a microphone and not to release one.

About playing with random people, I'd love to do that, but also keep the Friend Code system so you can repeatedly play people you like to hang out with online.

Nothing else for me to say as I don't have my Wii hooked up to the 'net, but that's my two cents.

I think the whole friend code system is terrible too (completely unnecessary and not related to the fact that there's no subscription fee.)

However, don't criticize Nintendo for selling the Wii to make a profit. Apparently, you forgot that Nintendo only makes games and consoles, unlike Microsoft and Sony.

They don't even need to release a mic. A USB keyboard and a lobby would suffice.Nintendo have experimented with online since the NES/SNES days (look up Nintendo channel)so there really is no excuse for it being this poor. Very few games are actually online, and even when they are its barebones. If this didn't annoy me so much I'd absolutely love Nintendo, but it's things like this that make me think they're just another greedy corporation.

Some of your points are correct, however this is Nintendo's REAL first shot at online. Sure NES/SNES had it but whatever, the Wii's online may not be flawless but it has very little lag, and for free that is pretty amazing. Also about the "very few" games that are online. Look at the line-up for the ones coming. I could go on but I don't really feel like typing it all.

Everyone else (Microsoft and Sony) has other industries to soak up their short--to-possibly-long-term losses. Nintendo is a gaming company. All they do is gaming.

It could well be that Nintendo are scared of being sued, which is why any kind of communication in Nintendo based games is near non-existant. Most companies throw the responsibility of online communication at the user. But at the end of the day, those companies have little to lose. Nintendo as a hardware developer would still be held accountable. Especially to those who are new to the experience. Some one has to take responsibility when it comes to allowing such communication in family based online games. It's about more than being concerned with keeping a family image. Gaming is for everyone. Everyone has to be considered when making these features available online. Anyway, there's no reason why a 3rd party developer cannot release a headset for their own online games. In fact it's more likely if the games being played have a higher age rating. But either way, I didn't think there was anything wrong with the online modes in Mario Kart DS or Mario Strikers Charged. I enjoy the competition. The idle chit-chat isn't required.

So why dont you and the topic creator start paying for the service, they can charge you a million bucks a month and then you can have all the features you need.

... That doesn't mean much when Xbox life is like $50 a year.. If you can't afford that, then you shouldn't be playing the Wii to begin with.:|

And no communciation what so ever can not be blamed on Nintendo with the little words on the rating system "rating of game may change for online play".. They can point to that every time some one is offended and said we warned you.. Even on top of that people, there is PARENTAL controls that can mute voices/chat for people too young or soft for it.

I feel that after paying $250 for the system and $50 per game, it should constitute at least an average online experience without a subscription fee, which Nintendo doesn't deliver in my opnion.

Rocky32189

Now, I can totally go with Nintendo being stubborn beyond belief. It took them this long to implement ANY online, and I agree that this online is lackluster to say the least. Sony's is the much better free service, and the 360's is awesome for only 50 bucks. I can go with Nintendo being lazy when it comes to it, even if it is thier first foray, in the home consoles market, into the "online world." But, maybe it was the way you phrased it, but I almost laughed when you said they are the greediest gaming company. First of all, games is all they have, while MS and Sony can rely on thier other divisions to pull them through if they take a gigantic loss. But, further more, it's like you think MS and Sony priced thier consoles to be nice to the consumer. Yea right, they priced it at the highest point they could possibly think, and see if the public thought it was worth it. Sony screwed up, and that's why they lowered the price...for a little while anyhow.

When it comes down to it, all three of them are out to make as much money as possible, and just because Nintendo isn't taking a loss on each console it's selling, doesn't mean they are greedy. It simple tells us all that they know how much we are willing to pay for the Wii, which happens to be more than what they cost. Most people in the buisness world would call that "good buisness."

I would take any bet to say the at heart, Sony and MS would LOVE to be selling a system they would be making profit on each one they sold.

But, back to topic, Nintendo has a long way to go to get thier online up to snuff, even for a free one. And by the way, for all the people who seem to think that people who don't like FC's, is because they are not smart enough to handle them...really needs to expirence something called "convenience."

Well, for one thing, if you are referring to the NES password save system, I don't think the cartridges did have memory in them... that was the problem. However, LoZ did have a save system, so I can't be entirely sure.

Anyway, I agree that Nintendo's online service sucks, but you get what you pay for, which in this case is nothing. The DS' Wi-Fi is better than the PSP's by the way. :P The DS does at least have the occassional game that supports voice chat.

I'm not much of a online player, but I can see that Nintendo's online is basic extremly basic. IMO, Theres nothing bad about having online for free even if it's the most basic thing. I think having a DVD player a simple TV capable to connect to the DVD player and a DVD to watch is more than enough to enjoy a movie. Sure we have all this fancy surround sound and High-def TV and such, but it's not really not necessary it just makes thing better, but is not a must. Whatt ppl need to understand that 90% of the things they seem to be asking nintendo are just fancy stuff not necessary. Also, IMO online is also included in that "fancy stuff" really, was it really bad back in the day of the NES/SNES/N64 era where there was pretty much no online at all? In a way this topic is pretty much just complaining on wanting fancy stuff for what they have. Of course it might be good, but there just add ons nothing more.

Anyways, I hope that made sense. I'm bad at making sense on stuff like this.

It's not quite that simple for Wii. The Wii Remote doesn't have a port to plug a mic into, the DS on the other hand has a built in mic and a port for a headset. Clearly, if Nintendo cared about voice chat, they'd have put a port on the Wii Remote for a headset.

Really, I think most Nintendo fans (like myself) would be satisfied as long as important multiplayer games such as SSBB and Mario Kart have online play.

I think the friend code system is not a bad idea, but it should be just console codes instead of per-game codes. Also, Nintendo uses it in strange ways. Like in Pokemon, you can only battle with your friends, but your Pokemon can be traded to anyone (you can't choose). Who thought that one up?

The Wii has bluetooth. And even with four controllers connected, the BT transceiver (assuming Nintendo followed the standard completely) will allow for three more wireless devices.

here you go. linkHere's a snippet

"The Wii only recognizes up to 4 Wiimotes, but the Bluetooth specification allows for up to 7 Bluetooth-capable devices. That leaves three slots for other Bluetooth devices such as headsets, cell phones, or printers (which may sound strange, but would not be Nintendo's first interaction with a printer). "

I'm positive there are more sites that confirm this.

I completely agree. Whoever is arguing about voice chat being good or bad is being stupid. Why not just not use the damn thing if the "little kids" annoy you?

XBL is worth 50 bucks a year.

PSN is cool enough for a free online service for a 500-600 dollar console.

PC games are almost all free to play online and with the use of some free programs, can be better.

Wii's online features have yet to prove they are good enough for a free service for even a 250 dollar console, IMO.

The original poster is 100 percent correct. I was thinking the same way as soon as the wii came out.

[QUOTE="Rocky32189"]

Not only are they overcharging for the their system (instead of selling at a loss like everyone else)

ThePlothole

Everyone else (Microsoft and Sony) has other industries to soak up their short--to-possibly-long-term losses. Nintendo is a gaming company. All they do is gaming.

Well, true as it may be, that won't make me forgive Nintendo for their failing online service...

Keep in mind that this is the Wii forum, not System Wars. :?

In all actuality as much as I dislike Nintendo's online service, if they offer a lag free online Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart I'm satisfied. Voice chat would certainly be nice, but not entirely necessary for me since I don't really talk much online anyway. Besides, we know that it is possible for Nintendo to create a headset for the Wii, so we can always hope that they have something in the works for voice chat.

Who cares? You want online go Buy a PS3 or 360. Nintendo is known for thier great single player games, and to me, thats all i need. I congradulate them for trying it, but if they keep getting people like you guys that only complain they should get rid of the whole thing, and go back to what they do best. And that is making great games with out online.

nintendo knows what there doing, they haven't had a good game to utilize online chat, metroid could have it, the ds version had a 'lobby chat'esque option, so why wouldn't they tack it on.

how can you guys get annoyed by this when there hasn't even been a game to use such features.

the wii isn't even made for fps hardxcore battle simulation historical event recreation/revisitation/altered abstract science fiction blended games which we've played about ten thousand times already. THEY are not actual videogames, and they ruin the word.

the 360 was made for those kinds of games.

I'm complaining because it's cheap and, with all the money Nintendo are making we should be getting more. Online on the PSP is free, and on some games you have lobby's and voice chat. The PSN is also free, and you can download demo's trailers, and film clips. THAT is why I'm complaining. Nintendo have the worst 'free' online service, yet they're the only ones who make a profit on every single time someone buys one of their products.manicfoot

Perhaps you forgot that your paying $600 for a ps3 and $180 for a psp.
