Is it? I can't find a used version of Platinum at the game stores I go to, so I'm thinking I should just look for a used copy of Diamond.

Yes. Platinum has Everything In domond and Pearl combined plus other thing like the Battle Frontier and an Improved story line.

What is battle frontier? I asked the question because I plan to try out the competitive aspect, such as breeding and training for online matches. If I'm going to focus on those factors, is Platinum really better than Diamond or Pearl?

Yes. It's worth the extra search.

Why not just get it new? It's like $5 extra...

I can't say it's better for Battleing, but it's better for traing, since wild pokemon in Platinum are at Higher Lvls

But it's better to start with lower level pokemon, so you can get more done while ev traiing, right?

It is an improvement as far as replay value and multiplayer are concerned. But from a gameplay perspective, regretably the answer is no.

I want to try battling, training, and breeding. Is it worth it to get Platinum for those things, or is Diamond just as good?

I had Pearl and sold it on amazon after beating like the fourth gym.

I think for the most part, although I haven't played it, Platinum is yet another gimmick. If you're a diehard fan go ahead and get it.

Since Diamond, Pearl and Platinum are like the same price (still) it shouldn't matter that much.

I'm sure you'll be fine either way but most people are all about Platinum these days.

I don't think it'd make a difference, but long story short, you might as well get Platinum.
