So? Your point? It's still a franchise. And why would it be a Mario franchise? Just because Mario is in it? Or is it because his name is in it?

It is its own separate franchise. That is not to say, however, that it does not suck from the money making, gold plated teet of the mario franchise ... as it were.

It's not a Mario franchise any more than it's a Legend of Zelda/Donkey Kong/Pokemon/Starfox/Kid Icarus/Fire Emblem/Ice Climbers/Kirby/Metal Gear Solid/Yoshi/...

...I think you get the idea.

It is a seperate franchise because Mario does not play primary role in the video game anymore than any of the other characters. There are no main characters. It's like Soul Calibur. There is no main character. I always considered Super Smash Brothers to be Mario's video game, but then I noticed that Link, Zelda, Pikachu, Gannondorf, Ness, Ike, Solid Snake, Roy, Marth and many other characters have never appeared in a Mario vide game before.

It is it's own franchise because it turned real successful and they made 2 direct sequels to the original. The first smash bros was indeed just another mario spinoff.

Spin off series with Nintendo based characters. Yes it is now a franchise.
