Or is it all just rumor and hearsay so far?

Well not much is confirmed but so many sources are saying reasonable things
854x480 screen by Sharp 3D/2D, 3.4 inch and at least one touch sensitive, presumably still stylus.
My verdict: Makes sense, initially you'll say they wouldn't give the 3DS higher resolution than the Wii, but the GPU won't be near Wii quality since its "GameCube" power as nintendo said it, and also 3D essentially halves the resolution of the 3D playback. Makes sense to me
Analog stick, Wireless N, Rumble, better battery life? I see no reason why not.
Price and release? I'd say this holiday November at latest, they won't miss the holiday season that'd be stupid. DS is losing momentum in NA/EU finally and this is the perfect time to introduce the nex gen handheld and act as if the DS brand never stopped being in high demand. Price? I doubt it goes over $199. People say with the XL that it'd be even higher but you gotta look at it this way
DSi XL is $189 because it adds costs to the original DSi design with bigger screens and the price point is already set on the DSi line at $169 starting.
3DS is a new design, the 3D screens will only cost around a total of $40, WiFi is cheap, a SD/MicroSD slot and 3DS/DS slot (coz i bet the 3DS card will be longer and bigger but still same width of DS cards so they fit in the same slot, ala GB,GBC,GBA.
Guys Nintendo said this will be "roughly as powerful as GameCube" that means it'll be cheap to make. 10 year old tech.
Believe me, if they can put 833Mhz CPU, 256MB RAM, 100Mhz GPU, 8GB flash memory, Wireless N into an iPod Touch and sell it for a $30 profit at $199.99, then nintendo can slap the GameCube's 485Mhz CPU, 32MB-40MB RAM, 140Mhz GPU, no flash memory (or like 1GB), Wireless B/G into a 3DS and sell it for even cheaper
Plus Apple/Sony have taught nintendo something, don't price your device more than $200. the $200 iTouch always sells much more than the $300/$400 ones, those are just for the big iNuts. Nintendo will probably pack this handheld up to around $130-$160 in total costs to manufacture per unit, and sell it for $179.99-$199.99
thats just my prediction, i guess we'll find out at e3 (hopefully)
Hmm...it's quite interesting but what is a 3DS withot 3D? A Ds? (actually just an S :P bear with me) So without 3D it probably will be the same thing as an XLIwata confirmed that 3D is optional.

No they're adding rumble, accelerometer and an analogue stick I think, there's no big thing like touch screen was to DS. There are some minor stuff though that will compensate for that. Also from what they say it's gonna have neat gamecubeish graphics.

thats good,i hate the ds graphics, you can see squares everywhere lolA lot of rumors are saying it won't have Tegra 2, some say it will. IGN is saying they're hearing no, but others still say yes
I'd hope it has T2. multi-core 1GHz with 256MB RAM? 1080p video output through HDMI? count me in
