Okay, I might be selling my current DS Lite. It is onyx, and is in excellent condition. I've had it for 1 year. My friend wants to buy a DS. Should I sell it for $100 and then buy the Cobalt/Onyx DS Lite??

Let me tell you why this is a bad idea, purely from an economic standpoint.
First of all, you are going to be losing money. You are selling your DS to your friend for less than you would be buying the new DS. If you said that you were going to sell it for, say, the same exact price that you paid for it, then I would say 'sure, go for it'. But you aren't.
Also, you will be paying tax on the new DS, you friend will not be paying tax on your DS, which means that, again, you will end up paying more.
This is a bad idea, because in the end, you pay money for something you already own! If your DS is in perfect condition like you say, you will be paying for a different color... why would you want to do this? It is just a color. The machine is what matters, the games are what matters. Unless you are some genius whiz kid who made a whole bunch of money and is filthy rich beyond anyone's wildest imagination, and you want to help your friend out by selling him a DS for less, then taking the brunt of the cost yourself for the new machine... well, go for it.
BUT, if not:
Do not sell your DS to your friend. Make your friend buy the new DS himself. When your friend buys it, go out to the store and buy a new game, wait for Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword. Then, come home, and show off to your friend your new awesome game that you managed to afford because you didn't waste your money on a new DS when your old one was perfectly good.

while i do think this is a bad idea you cant expect him to sell a used ds for full price it just doesnt work like that
Oh my...
If its in perfect condition, then its a terrible idea. As someone stated earlier, its like trading a brand new sports car in on one with a racing stripe, AND losing money on it! Don't do it. Get a decal kit or something if you want to spice up your ds, though i think those make it look tacky. onyx is the best color anyways...
