It's the only Wii title among GS's overall GOTY:

http://www.gamespot.com/best-of/game-of-the-year/index.html

If makes no sense for the Wii GOTY to be different than the only Wii title on the overall GOTY.

Yes, SSBB had a higher score than No More Heroes for GS, but the rating alone doesn't matter.

I think the bigger travesty is that de Blob isn't even a nominee for best Wii game. WTF guys? :(

Ugh, how unfortunate. The Wii had much better games this year.

NMH was OK, but it was just way to repetitive to win GOTY on the system

Interesting conclusion

So the game that's not currently winning the best Wii game of the year will win?

So you know who is going to vote later?

What sense would that make if Brawl won Wii Game of the Year if No More Heroes is nominated as the only overall Wii GOTY? Brawl wasn't there. As a result, the winner has to be No More Heroes.

After reading through both the list of nominees for each category and looking at how the userbase voted in each category, I have to say I wished I hadn't, as it's made me a little depressed. :P

Or maybe Gamespot's just being bias? Seriously, Brawl has about four times as many votes.:P

I was also very desturbed that de Blob was not on the list for best platformer or wii game of the year. At least it'll win best Australian game, but that just doesn't do it justice.

When I read here that de Blob wasn't on my list, I decided to reserve my judgement and see which games made the list. I actually haven't played de Blob (yet), but recalled hearing it was good (except for the usual few naysayers all games have), so was curious as to what made it.

While I haven't played the nominees yet either, there was one game on there that, from what I recall received a very "meh" response, if it even got that positive, and I had at least played a demo of, so I feel forced to ask:

Mirror's Edge... really?

(It gives me the same feeling I got upon learning Brett Farve got picked over Chad Pennington for the Pro Bowl (American football reference).)

TheSmitto

There were only four games on that list as opposed to five, which leads me to believe it's on that list basically purely because there are no other Aussie games to pick from. :P

The fact that the only list it makes is one that it made by default is a little sad.

In all fairness, NHL '09 is one of the best hockey games, if not sports game, I have ever played. It's absolutely fantastic and a gigantic jump for the series. If Madden can receive nominations in previous years, why not NHL?

SSB:B can get nominated for all I care, but if it was to actually win in some terrible parallel universe, I swear I might just...do....... something.

Let's get something straight here. The voting is for Reader's Choice. Gamespot's actual Wii Game of the Year is chosen by the editors, regardless of how the voting turns out.

With that said, it looks like the official Wii Game of the Year will be between Brawl and No More Heroes, neither of which I enjoyed very much. I'm hoping for a surprise and one of the downloadable games will win. If that's the case, it's a close one in my book between Megaman and World of Goo. The former is an amazing revisiting of a classic, while the latter is entirely new and amazing. I won't be disappointed if either of them wins.

No More Heroes has WAY too many problems for it to win any positive awards, in my opinion. It could win the Most Wasted Potential Award, if that existed. I'm pretty sure it was rushed out the door before it could be really fine tuned, which is most likely the publisher's fault rather than the developer, so I'm not really knocking Suda or Grasshopper. The game has its moments, but they're overshadowed by the glaring faults.

Brawl just isn't my type of game. I had fun with it for several weeks, but it couldn't keep my interest. It's mostly a quality game, except for the iffy online, so I wouldn't care too much if it wins awards. The gameplay is solid and fun, and there's a ton of content. Of NMH and Brawl, I'd be less disappointed if Brawl won.

As for Mario Kart, as much as I love it, I don't think it's even a serious contender this time. It was easily the game that I personally had the most fun and spent the most time with this year, but I don't really feel like it's GotY material. I think Megaman and World of Goo were just too surprisingly awesome to be outdone by Mario Kart's expected, tried-and-true greatness.

Have you played de Blob yet? If not, you absolutely have to before making a decision about GOTY. I insist. :x

And yes, I am pimping it every chance I get. It is one of the best games I've played and deserves far more recognition.

IMO No More Heroes is a good pick. Sure, the game has it's fault but I really think that the good greatly outshines the bad. It is a shame that the game is not as polished as it could have been, but I'm still not sure whether Suda wanted it that way or not, and then I begin to wonder how full of yourself you have to be to release an unpolished game. Regardless it's just too stylish, bizarre, and just fun to let some of the problems really hinder your enjoyment. As much as I enjoy Brawl it's just an update to Melee, Nintendo didn't do anything revolutionary to the formula, they just added some new characters and levels. Big whoop. I love Brawl, but for GOTY I'd have to give it to a new game like NMH than Brawl.

It should've been Brawl for the best game of the year list. If I recall correctly, it was one of the highest ranked in the preliminaries with MGS4.

If they do I'll be surprised

I voted for the third choice. There are plenty of MUCH more deserving titles than this game. Besides, I trust IGN more than Gamespot and they only gave it a 7.8, which is by no means game of the year material. IMO the best game of the year is clearly either Brawl for outstanding multiplayer or Goo for it's amazing innovation. Personally i think that a lot people dislike brawl because it just didn't live up to their standards. After all, weren't' we all expecting fifty characters in the game and such? As for World of Goo, is suppose it's questionable if a Wii Ware title can win because it's amazing for what it is, as it just doesn't have the depth of Brawl. I think it's perfectly acceptable. Anyways, No More Heroes just doesn't deserve to be GOTY.

I was just looking at NMH, and it looks pretty cool. If you ask me, the Wii actually had an ok year(SMBB, MK, NMH, De Blob, Wario)

I don't have a Wii, but I'm just making my point.

I'm having faith in SSBB, because it was the most highly-anticipated game of 2008. People were checking the Dojo site everyday, people were leaking into "Brawl Insiders" like Brawlcentral.com, and Youtube became so laggy when Brawl was realeased in Japan. It was awaited for so many months after many delays because the developes were making the best game it can be.

No More Heroes all the way. Sure, it was a little rough around the edges, but it's a great original IP in a sea of mediocrity this year (SSBB and tons of other shovelware) and it was downright fun. I've put over 40 hours into it, beat it on every difficulty, found every hidden item, and I STILL want to play it again.

Considering the fact that they gave De Blob an 8.0, it makes sense that it isn't a nominee for best wii game. I know its a brilliant game but in GS's opinion they only think its worth an 8.0 so they could probably think of 5 better games than De Blob. Its unfortunate yes. If De Blob got an 8.5 then it may have reached a nominee for best wii game.

You're horribly mistaken, even the most stubborn PS3/360 fanboys know that these two franchises are hardcore. Mario was one of the first games ever made and people still play it....thats hardcore. SSBB, people play crazy multiplayer matches for hours and years...thats hardcore as well. These are facts, and you failed to bring those facts to support your comment.

Well, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it. The older Mario games were definitely hardcore, or at least in a tier between casual and hardcore (back in the day; Contra and Gradius = most hardcore of its time) but Mario 64 and everything after it was made too easy for the hardcore gamers to enjoy. Meanwhile, Smash Bros can't even stand in the shadow of true hardcore fighters, such as the Street Fighter, KoF, or GGXX series. :) And... er... People wanting to punish themselves with Smash for hours and years is up to them, I'd rather play a true fighting game, then go to the arcade and beat people down in it. ;)

Ah, but other casual games like Halo also have competitions. I've even witnessed COOKING MAMA competitions at gaming conventions. Competing in a casual game does not make the game hardcore, oh padawan. ;) If Smash truly was a hardcore fighting game, it would have been released first in the arcades, seeing as the arcade scene always has been and still is a viable market in Japan.

Both games appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers (using your terms). I don't see the point in debating here, since you're both right to a certain extent. It's almost like debating whether a banana is yellow or a fruit.

Well, as a hardcore gamer myself, Smash and Galaxy don't appeal to me, so I don't quite see your point. I'd much rather be playing the original Super Mario Bros. games, because they were at least challenging, AND didn't have crappy camera angles. :)

Maybe I should've said "can appeal to both," then, because that's certainly true. I'd probably be considered a hardcore gamer, and I enjoyed both games. My point is that the games, especially Galaxy, were designed to appeal to all types of gamers, and all types of gamers have the ability to easily enjoy them if that's their thing.

I just don't like the debate over whether games are casual or hardcore because it seems like a bitter argument that doesn't even matter. If you think it's fun, play it. If you don't, let those who do play it. What's the point in labeling it? Hardcore gamers can enjoy some casual games, and casual gamers can enjoy some hardcore games. It's not like enjoying a so-called casual game makes a so-called hardcore gamer any less of a gamer, does it?

NMH was an awesome game with tons of replayability. SSBB has more replayability though but either way I'm happy if either win.

Ugh, how unfortunate. The Wii had much better games this year.

NMH was OK, but it was just way to repetitive to win GOTY on the system

Right with you on that one. Wayyy to repetitive.

Cool story bro

Btw, I don't know ANY casual gamers which enjoy the hardcore games I enjoy (Contra, Gradius, GGXX, Phantom Dust, Ninja Gaiden Black...) and I don't enjoy any of the casual games my casual friends enjoy (Mario Kart, Halo, Smash, 3D Zelda, 3D Mario, Mario Party...) So.... come again?

I might as well say "cool story" back to you. You're not indicative of every gamer out there. I'm not trying to convince you that you should like these games.... I'm just trying to point out that some people like you CAN enjoy them, and some people who aren't like you can enjoy the games that you do.

[QUOTE="wiifan001"]

No it will not be Super Smash Bros. Brawl will win.

I just wanted to point out that I love Jordan

You guys can keep on having this conversation now lol

Still wont change that every single Nintendo game is casual since it's start but this is fun to read lol
