Hey Guys,

Just bought a WiiU on impulse today. Feel a bit awkward since the last Nintendo Console (handhelds aside) that I owned was the SNES.

It came with a free copy of Super Mario Bros.U and Super Luigi.U

I also picked up Mario Kart 8, The Legend of Zelda: The wind Waker HD and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze with it.

Any advise for a new adopter such as myself before I buckle down and start gaming?

Also, which game do you guys recommend I should start with?

Thanks in advance.

The games you picked up are the definite must haves so that's good. If you're interested in some more obscure gems:

-Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge: great hack n' slash, fast, shiny new graphics. Great game

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut: Awesome FPS blended with RPG stats and abilities. It's the Director's Cut version so it fixes a lot of the issues from the first release and looks better than its PS3/Xbox 360 counterparts. Highly recommend if you're into the genre.

-Black Ops 2: If you are into COD or FPS for that matter, it turns out this COD isn't that generic and is quite fun. It also looks better than its PS3 Xbox 360 counterparts.

-Resident Evil: Revelations: If you're looking for a Resident Evil in HD, here's a good one. Some will say RE:R is more of a survival horror than some of the past iterations. Highly recommend.

I also recommend some Eshop games as well. Things like Shovel Knight, NES Remix are great games and are easy to pick up and play.

Also buy the Wii U Pro Controller. For certain genres it feels great.

Mario Kart is a blast and I really enjoyed Super Mario Bros. U. All the games you have purchased are great. You can't go wrong with any of them.

Start off with Mario, it was a launch title so you'll get the launch experience like I had. It's fun and you're familiar with it since you owned SNES. :)

My Wii U highlight reel would include: Games like Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario U, and Super Mario 3D.

You could also play old Wii games like Super Mario Galaxy 1/2, Zelda TP, and Metroid Prime 3 if you were so inclined. :)

Ninja Gaiden 3: razor's was terrible. I was very upset after playing it.

I know this user who created this thread. He's a good guy. Also, he owns a PS3-PC so playing old ports from other systems (that he probably played long ago or doesn't enjoy) wouldn't be the best use of the Wii U he just bought. With a new console you recommended games he could get anywhere (and probably already did) and the games you mentioned were below average to decent, but I think for the best results you should have mentioned some exclusive and high scoring Wii U games to start him off.

Games like Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3, Super Mario 3D, or Mario Kart 8 make sense and what I recommend (also critics would agree).

I own a Wii U since launch but I wouldn't recommend any of the titles that companies slap onto the system and don't take advantage of the Tablet. Otherwise, he could have just kept playing his games on his PS3/PC a long time ago (COD which has better online support elsewhere, Ninja Gaiden 3 although it's terrible, RE:Revelations, and Deus Ex).

Others have already mentioned good starting points for Wii U games. Since the last Nintendo console you owned was the SNES, you have a ton of great games to get into via backwards compatibility. A few I can recommend from the Wii:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  • Red Steel 2
  • Metroid Prime 3 or Metroid Prime Trilogy if you can get by the price tag
  • Xenoblade Chronicles, if you can find it for a reasonable price
  • The Last Story
  • Kirby: Return to Dreamland
  • Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles & Darkside Chronicles
  • Madworld
  • House of the Dead: Overkill

Mario 3D World should be on your list of games to buy even though you have NSM and NSL. Both of those games pale in comparison to 3D World. I bought it recently, sat down to play, and before I knew it 4 hours had gone by.

lego city undercover is worth a play if you can get it for a reasonable price.

monster hunter 3U is also a great game though it is also a marmite game. see if you can borrow it for a while first.

i would also recommend grabbing a wiimote and nunchuck. the wiiu is compatible with wii games so there are tons of games to get on the back catalogue. red steel 2, wii sports resort, mario galaxy 1 and 2, xenoblade, last story...i could go on.

@mariokart97: You're mistaken about Wii U ports looking better than the ps3/360 versions, 99% of the time they look worse. Hell, the COD games run at 15 - 20 fps less than the 360 versions.

@mariokart97 : Some of those are great games but like SolidTy mentioned, I've already played most of them. Its my bad though, should have probably mentioned that I already own a PS3/PC/PS4/Xbone. I'll definitely be picking up the pro controller seeing that the WiiU gamepad might take a bit of getting used to.

@KBFloYdand @osan0: Monster Hunter! How could I forget that..played the heck out of Monster Hunter on PSP. I loved it. I'll definitely be going out to look for it today along with the pro controller.

@SolidTyThanks as always Ty. I looked at some of those games. Wonderful 101 and Mario 3D look like games I'll want to play.

I think I'll knock these out of the way first then transition back into Wii territory like YearoftheSnake5 and others pointed out.

You know, with all these games, I'm not regretting this purchase at all. I'm actually glad I picked it up at a period where the wii u is starting to pick up some steam.

I mentioned those 3rd party titles because the person above me recommended many of the must have titles anyway, and the TC already picked out and currently owns many of the great ones as well.

I enjoy Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge. To me, it is a great hack n' slash game, you are 100% entitled to your opinion but nothing will change the fact that I have fun when playing it. Dismemberment is back, the Wii U version has superior textures(though suffers a bit from frame-rate drops due to slightly weaker CPU I know) when compared to the original Ninja Gaiden 3 release on 360 and PS3. I understand you have an opinion and I do not wish to change it, so please do not try to change mine.

And don't even try to say Wonderful 101 is good. Played it and returned it. Fed into the hype and was very unsatisfied.

Verbalfilth, it's spectacular to read you are going to enjoy your new system. :)

Fair enough. I'm not trying to change your mind, but I wanted to let you know he already had access to those titles in year's past and there were better, higher scoring Tablet extensive options for the Wii U, but I see your post was influenced by the poster above you.

Have a good one.

If you've enjoyed any of the previous Lego games, definitely get Lego City Undercover. It's like Lego meets GTA.

I'd say that Pikmin 3 and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze are THE two absolute must haves on the system thus far. I'd also highly recommend Super Mario 3D World and The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword (wii remote plus and nunchuk required)

@verbalfilth:

Good choices with the games, you will enjoy them!
