theres many arguments wether mario kart is based around skill or luck. I belive it is skill for automatic and manual

automatic u must pick the right kart (wild wing reccoomended) and u must time ur turns when it comes to tighht turns were u should drift

manual

takes a lot of skill cuz u must kno how to turn and stuff

and if this game was luck how come there a people that have 9999 vr points they cant get lucky that many times

I think it's luck, you can be first in a race all the way round and then be nailed by a blue shell or 2 right before the finish line and come last, which is really frustrating to say the least.

Clearly, it's a mixture of both skill and luck. But, if i had to choose one, i'd definitely say that there's more skill involved than luck. If you've been driving around rainbow road for a while, you'll notice that this particular track's main focus is avoiding falls rather than stacking up items, so for this particular course it's definitely skill. As for the other courses it's both skill and luck, but skill plays a more important role as always.

Both, but mostly skill. When you're playing a few online races with the same people, there's always those who consistently finish around a certain place, which obviously isn't luck.

Of course we all get the odd race when we're first the whole way and end up last thanks to a 3rd lap shell slaughter, but it doesn't happen all the time.

Luck, the items are way too unbalanced. Still a fun game though

Requires more of luck than skill. Items are way too unbalanced for its own good. Still, skill is required to a certain degree.

Both but mostly skill. Items can help or annoy you but in the end, the one with better skills can win easily

Both, but mainly skill. Luck only comes with the items you get. Sometimes u get lucky and get a blue shell on the last lap just before the line.

For example, rainbow road needs skill for you just to be able to stay on the track. Luck can't keep you on the track the whole time.

It's like 80% skill and 20% luck online. And 60-40 offline.

Id say 80% luck and 20% skill. It takes little skill to get to first place, especially with the "trailing boost" you get when you tail someone close by. Then once your in front, a storm of blue shells prevent you from getting a large lead over second place, which keeps all the players in a bunch so that its anyones game right up to the last second of the race.

Personally, I think it's the worst Mario Kart yet.

I agree with this. But, I also think the track plays a large roll in the luck vs. skill as well. Tracks that take more skill like Rainbow Road or even the Bowser's Castles tend to have much larger gaps between groups of players (i.e. skill levels) regardless of the luck of the items. Other levels, like the Yoshi Falls (or whatever) are entirely luck. The person who wins the track is usually the one who gets a golden mushroom at the begining of lap 3.

100% skill. At least for a MK vet.

This game is deceptively deep, you must learn how to counter, every weapon has a counter.

As for the blue shell, if you learn the tracks good enough you should be at least 1/4 lab ahead of anybody else.

Erebyssial

Exactly

People new to the franchise or people who are awful at the game are going to say it's all luck.

People who have been playing the franchise for a while or people good at just this recent edition know it's all about skill with some luck mixed in.

You make your own luck in the game for the most part. Creating courses and deciding when to use and get power ups play a big part of the game. You have to be doing three things at once every second you're driving.

It is both skill and luck, as skill can keep players ahead from the pack, but luck will be determined by the number of spiny shells and powerful items that appear in the race. Luck also factors in with the number of racers using items and the number of item boxes on a course (the more there are, the greater the chances of a powerful item like the spiny shell being used).

I have played Mario Kart games long enough that I have the skills to finish first in almost every track, but the instances that I do not will be based on luck.

I'd say that skill and luck both play an even role in determining the winner.

I agree. Even if you are lucky, you will still lose if you aren't an able racer.

You can say that any multiplayer game is all luck. For instance, in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you could be pounding on a smash ball for quite a while until your opponent arrives and breaks the ball with one hit. Sure, Mario Kart requires luck to have skill, but no more than any other game.

Obviously both because of items. Though, one can use skill to overcome most of the luck in this game.

As a known MK pro on Gamefaqs, I'd have to say both.

Normal Worldwide/Regional Matches- 70% Skill, 30% Luck

A room where all 12 players have over 9000 VR-90% luck, 10% Skill.

Hmm... well I'll say skill. I have never experienced a bombardment of items like everyone else on this board (maybe that's luck?). Anyway You can pretty much get around every item except for the thunderbolts.

I'd say both. At one point my VR score was over 9000. But, after quite a few unlucky matches it went down by quite a bit. :(

I'd say it's a mixture of both, but leaning more on luck. Obviously, grabbing a Blue Shell or Star can drastically change the outcome of a race in no time flat. If there were no items, more skill would be needed to win...though an item-less Mario Kart sounds awful boring.

Skill. The ability to block items, wheelie speed boosts, power slide boosts, ramp speed boosts, and different controls for different karts provide a hidden level of depth.

Mostly skill, but it also depends a little bit on the tracks. Luigi's track is incredibly short, therefore, luck does have a lot to do. The entire race, most players are a few feet from each other, so, a single mushroom can make a difference. The opposite case would be Rainbow Road. You can get 10 Bullet Bills there and it wouldn't make any difference... If you don't have the skills, you simply won't make it. Other tracks fall somewhere in between.

I think it's mostly skill. Luck can be a factor when the players are all pretty much equal in skill, and in some extreme or exceptional cases it can play a small role if not, but as someone said, if you play in an online server you mostly see the same 3 or 4 racers finishing in high places. If I end up in a server with people who have Versus Records of 5000-6000, and I become first 5 times in a row by a long stretch, you can't tell me luck is the dominant factor in this game.

I'd say both luck and skill come into play. Whats the highest rating you can get online and is there something special for obtaining it or anything special that happens when u get that high? Sorry to go off-topic for a sec but I'm just curious.
