Hurray for Galaxy

These are some absolutely incredible figures. I can't believe how poorly Super Mario Sunshine did when it launched in North America. Super Mario Galaxy launched halfway through November, but we all saw that it did amazingly well in sales. In just over two weeks, the game managed to move 1.12 million units. Curious to see what Sunshine did?

August 2002: 350,768

How insane is that number!? Sunshine sold just about what Galaxy sold in Japan for its first week! We were complaining about Galaxy sales in Japan...we should have complained about Sunshine back in 2002! Let's look at some more monthly sales data. Once again, this is NA only.

September 2002: 266,592

October 2002: 66,436

November 2002: 131,498

December 2002: 177,409

Now factor in the sales of the Cube/Sunshine bundle, and that will put you at about 1.5 million units of Sunshine sold in 5 months. Once again, Galaxy has managed to move 1.12 units in less than a full month. I guess this goes to show that great software really will sell on Wii...in NA at least.

It does LOOK better, but you have to remember that Sunshine launched a while after the Cube, whereas Galaxy launched a year after. Also, the Wii has probably outsold the GC's lifetime sales figures (or it's getting close to it) in the US so there's a lot more Wii's about than there were GC's at the time of Sunshine's launch. Galaxy is selling pretty well, but I'm certain there is more people who own a Wii and don't have Galaxy than people who had a GC and didn't buy Sunshine.I live in the UK and Galaxy is nowhere to be found in the sales charts in our Game stores. Mario & Sonic at the olympics has been number 1 for weeks. It's kinda sad because it is such an awful, cheaply made game.

The GC came out in November 2001, then Sunshine came out in August the next year. It was less than a year later... the key difference is that the Wii has sold a lot more in a year's time.

Galaxy is selling well but I am still very disappointed that it isn't selling much better. The highest rated game this generation, a gorgeous platformer, and just an absolutely terrific game. Where are all the Mario/platforming fans support here? Nintendo even stated that the game's sales by November 30th were considered to be "borderline disappointing." Shame too.

The incredible number of Wii consoles that have been sold probably had a lot to do with this. The Gamecube obviously didn't sell too well, so I would not have expected too much from any of the games anyway.

I stand corrected :P

It is sad that Galaxy is not selling better than it is in comparison to how many wii owners there are. Theoutstanding gameplay, controls, graphics, and level design make it easily the best wii game imo. Do the oh so many casual gaming wii owners out there just not know about SMG or how good it is?

Mario Galaxy is far better than that disappointment known as Super Mario Sunshine. Compared to the greatness of Galaxy, Mario Sunshine should be called "Mario: Dim Light Bulb In a Basement."

i could care wat u guys say. but galaxy is better than sunshine in many ways but sunshine is so much funner. I find myself playing over the series again and again but once i beat galaxy i simply set it aside and forgot about it.. so to me sunshine is better in the long run =P
