In the 2D world it's a close tie but, in the 3D world, Mario for sure.

Character itself: Sonic >>> Mario.

Sonic defined not only a distinct way to play a platformer but also gave it an attitude.  And although there was no true "story" to the game, it was easy to see one.  Sonic 1 set the stage, but it was the stories of Sonic2-3-S&knuckles that really made the Sonic franchise.  That, its music and overall sense of speed with great maps.

Mario had great 2d platforming, no question about it, top knotch.  And is a different game in many respects than Sonic.  I thought Mario World (contrary to popular opinion) wasn't as good as Super Mario 3.  And I thought that the early Sonic games owned Super Mario World.

I've always been an avid fan of Sonic (hence my name) however, his journey into 3d is only saved by one or two levels per game that really show he shines.  What ruined Sonic? Playing as a million other characters.  Playing as Knuckles in Sonic3/S&K was part of the backstory to the game that gave altered paths (unlike Knuckles missions now that have him flying around looking for stuff) It was great and filled with speed.  I think every character except Shadow added to the game should not have been playable.  Shadow was an inevitability (a true rival for Sonic aside from Knuckles) that works for Eggman.

IMO I like Sonic. I admit the games have taken a bit of a dive. Sonic adventure 2 battle was great! a 10/10, it was also my first sonic game. sonic dx was lame due to the serious lack of running. Hero IMO though many dissagree was also great. Shadow the hedgehog, though wasn't as good as it could have been and tried TOO hard to make Shadow cool was also good. Riders was something diffrent and suprisingly fun. It was good for a 1 shot deal and a good way to end Soincs adventure on that GEN. Soinc the hedgehog for ps3 and 360 is the same problem as dx, lack of running. They just turned it into a rpg. But the sonic game for the wii looks like it gets back to the basic and what matters most. Anyway Mario is good but i choose sonic and i choose shadow over sonic cause chaoscontrol > ALLZymemaru
