So i finally got Other M yesterday...and i put a good 3 hours into yesterday and I am impressed. Ive played pretty much every metroid over the years, expcet the GBA one(s) idk. The prime series are some of my fav games this and last gen, and all i have to say, is this is the metroid ive been waiting for.

They did a good job at not going too far from the formula. There is a good amount of exploration, def not as much as prime series. but the action makes up for it. Controling Samus in a 3d enviroment with a D pad takes like 10 min to get used to. But once you start fighting more then just spinny guys, jumping in and out of 1st-3rd person works very well. You can dogpe while in 1st person view.

The enviroment looks better then any pic Ive seen. When you enter tight rooms and the camera goes over the shoulder, it really shows the detail to samus. this is one of the best lookin Wii games.

So i really hope that Nintendo takes Metroid in this direction for a couple more games. I enjoyed the prime series, but Super metroid and Metroid 2 are def my fav metroids, and this one is right up there. Great JOB team ninja and Nintendo.

Very nice, it's awesome you're enjoying Other M so much.
I've been on the fench about picking this one up, but I've been seeing alot of positive reviews from players, and I'm almost convinced to go get it.
What's mainly holding me back is I got to feed 2 other systems as well as the Wii, and it's a VERY busy fall this year for games.
The next three months are going to be severe. But there's most likely a slot on the shelf with Metroids name on it.

Yes, i thought so too. I became a little distraught when i started seeing all the hate posts show up when the game was released. I was wondering about my sanity and taste in games. Its good to know others appreciate the game.

Oh there are tons of people in love with this game. And I am one of them as well. And the hate posts aren't any more than any other greatgame still gets/ I even saw a hate post about Mass Effect recently. If you look around you'll notice the postive reviews and amount of people enjoying the game FAR outweigh the negative ones. Don't worry the game has been very well received just like every Metroid.

i was actualy extremly disapointed on almost every levle.

story was a total flop

with the exception of a few boss fights the game is way to easy

its extremly short

and i hate those sections where you go into first person just looking around in the envirment for something to advance the story not being able to continue the game till you find something hidden next to a bush. so annoying

it realy came off as mediocer to me. but glad to see peaple enjoying the game as much as you did. good games dont come around to often anymore

Other M is one of my top three Wii games.

The levels were great, the cutscenes were amazing, the fighting was fast paced and well played out, and the story kept me guessing up to about the last hour of the game.

I'm about 5 hours in and I love it. Sure, the story and dialogue are pretty weak, but the gameplay is terrific, and that's what really matters.

I will agree that it is amazing. Some of its final sections feel too linear, but other than that I don't have many complaints. I love the way they presented Samus and I hope to see her back like that for at least another two adventures.

I have to say that this is a pretty kick-ass game. I wasn't too sure about it at first, and kept comparing it to the Prime series, but once I got past that, I really started enjoying it. It kept me going, "Wow, this is so COOL!" throughout the entire thing.

Except- way too short, man D; I mean, really. It let me down in that aspect. The ending came as a total surprise. I was like, "What? That's IT?" Blah. I hope they at least make a sequel.
and bring back Adam. Hey- Anthony came back.. anything's possible, right? :'D
(Did I do that spoiler tag right?)

Glad to hear you liked it Videodogg, i loved the game myself. It had that feeling that i haven't got from a metroid game since super metroid, and i too hope they make a few more games in the same style and direction that this one had.

'' Oh come on now. I love the game, but lets be honest here, it is IMO one of the more flawed metroid games, not to say it isnt one of the best ones as well. I think it is amazing and overall very well done, but they need to iron out some wrinkles in the next one (assuming and hoping they make it similar to Other M). I don't like that you can recharge during many bosses and get away with it. I don't like that you can dodge ALL THE TIME, I wish they had more of that amazing metroid music, and a couple other small imperfections. Again, one of my favorites though, I am just saying that the next one will hopefully be the same but tweaked to be even better. I also expected the game to feel a bit more side scroller like, even though it is more or less a third person metroid game, rather then a side scroller.

Haha it just makes it too easy in parts and takes away the metroid feel, when doding beams and attacks took skill and precision. can you imagine fighting the mother brain and having all those beam things shoot the donut beams at you? it wouldnt be nearly as cool cause you just dodge rather then jump around them like an acrobat lol. I think the next one need to be even more side scrolleresque

I agree with this, although on the other hand I feel that the direction in which the game took the Metroid franchise was perfect. It and Fusion are exactly what I'd like a Metroid game to be. Games like Super Metroid did not provide, in my view, sufficient motivation behind Samus' - and consequently the player's - actions.

I agree, but in terms of EVERYTHING except for story Super Metroid trumps Fusion by a LONG shot. Other M had more of what made super metroid great, then fusion had, but it still wasnt quite enough. I mean super metroid had amazing envirnoments and music. And bosses to top it off.

I will have to play it again, but if I recall, the bosses were very similar (like hunters), the environments were almost always the same (spaceship), and there wasnt much amazing metroid music. I remember thinking it was much worse then Zero mission and definitely Super Metroid (my favorite Metroid game). Other M was a cross between the two (fusion and super), so it was very good to me.

I'm not sure I agree with that. I remember a lot of variety in the bosses, from a super-fast aquatic animal to the space jump spider. And yes, it was all in a spaceship, but like Other M, each sector was a different environment; it didn't all feel like a spaceship. And I thought its "mystery" songs, though short, were some of the best songs to set the mood in any Metroid.

Team Ninja pulled it off well, and Other M is a great title. A put a fist in the air. It symbolizes my exposion to the soul for them to go Metroid again. For Metroid is a leaf, from a branch of my soul. Other M yet helped the leaf grow and bigger and stronger, because we need Metroid games to cleanse, and other Metroid games to help grow.

Yea, for a game that took place in a ship, it didnt feel like it. What about when your on a planet, wondering miled beneath the surface. Just as confined. There where plenty of holograph rooms that made u feel as if you on a planet in a field or inside a volcano. I thought they did a great job at making u feel as if this ship was a planet.

Been waiting for such a game since 6 years (when Zero Mission came out) and it delivered. Most people hating on this most probably started playing this series with Prime, or never had Fusion and are now comparing it to the Prime series, which makes no sense really.

Metroid Other M...Amazing? I have never owned or played a metroid game before, but after seeing the gameplay videos of metroid prime corruption, and Other M I think it's obvious which one is better. They certainly made a mistake by changing the overall perspective of the game from first-person to an adventure-like format. Metroid has officially turned into a lousy piece of casual shovelware!
Well I dunno, one of the things I kinda liked about Fusion was the way in which your own CO was more or less an antagonist, and how several things you did at the end were in direct violation of it. Might not be so interesting now that it's Adam. :P
One of the things I really liked about Fusion, which I kinda wished Other M did more of, was the way in which Samus' path diverged from the beaten path established by the map you get at the start of each sector. Kinda added to the mystery of the gameplay. In Other M, on the other hand, you more or less just went from point A to point B, the only question sometimes being how you get there.

Your use of the word "shovelware" in this context gives me the sense that you may not know what it means. :P

Lol its a saying man, nothing more. I am simply saying it is far from perfect and I don't see how anyone could say its close to perfect. Obviously nearly every reviewer agrees with me, even if they loved the game as did I. I just hope the next one builds/fixes upon what was laid down with Other M and becomes my favorite metroid to date, because Other M was a brilliant game that had one to many flaws to trump the brilliance of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime.

I agree with you Gabu, Fusioin has the best bosses out of all the Metroid games to me, though Prime 2 also has amazing bosses so maybe that too. Also I must say that I enjoyed Zero Mission and Fusion more that Super Metroid. I was actually rather dissapointed in it, however I didnt play SM until it came out on VC 3 years ago. Prime is still my favorite Metroid though.

What puts Zero Mission over Super Metroid for me is the cleverness of the hidden items. Getting 100% in Super Metroid is a cakewalk compared to Zero Mission. Zero Mission feels like it's one step beyond Super Metroid to me, like a true sequel to Super Metroid in terms of gameplay. Everything that makes Super Metroid fun to play is improved and nearly perfected in Zero Mission.

As far as bosses go I think I have togo with either Echoes as well or Super. Other M's bosses would be much lower on the list. Though the Goyagma and Phantoon were pretty awesome.
As for zero mission being better then Super, I definitely disagree :P. They are so similar, but Super is far better.JordanElek

hmm, I looked at it as a shorter version of super metroid that seemed to copy Super too much, but again its been awhile since I have played this one aswell and might change my thinking after playing it again :P. Almost done with Prime on the prime trilogy disc right now.

I also prefer Zero Mission to Super. In fact Zero Mission is my second favorite Metroid game behind Prime.

When you have a game with a story, direction is necessary, there is no way around that. That's the reason open world games struggle with story so much, to keep the story from being disjointed, you have to skip all the side missions which kind of defeats the purpose of an open world. Also leaving the path open to interpretation makes the game more subject to sequence breaking, something I would guess they really wanted to avoid in this game. Personally I loved it, a big fan of the approach. It was point A to point B, but it always is, you go to a section with a set goal in mind. The only complaint I would have is I wish they would have let us have that battle with Mother Brain from Super Metroid, that would have been great.

I don't think I explained myself properly. I'm not talking about side missions; I'm talking about the fact that Metroid Fusion's story took Samus far outside of the map given to you at the beginning of each sector, to unexplored and hidden territories, which sometimes were absolutely not where your CO wanted you to go, to boot.

No I got what you were saying, I was just using side missions as an example from open world games. You know when you write a story, there is a certain direction, mood and pacing you have in mind for people to experience. Its hard enough for video games to pull that off, but when they start letting you go off the beaten path, that only makes it infinitely more difficult. Like for example, most who play FO3 says the story is weak, you know its your standard issue story; but that really shouldn't matter. Take Uncharted, a series praised for its story, but its the most cliche action story you can come up with. I remember playing the game with a friend of mine watching and were just saying exactly what was going to happen in each chapter and it always happened. But its still great, because it had the optimal direction, mood and pacing that ND had in mind, because it restricted you to a set path.

Sakamoto likely wanted to retain the pacing as much as possible and you wandering off would have made the effect each part of the story had on you weaker. It brings me back to FO3, the story wasn't really bad, its just that you would go 10hrs of gameplay between each story segment, so whatever weight a particular segment of the story was suppose to have on you in the grand scheme of the entire story is gone by the time you get to next part. Whereas Uncharted kept you invested in the story the entire time by keeping you committed.

I'll preempt Gabu with this.

But that's not really what he was talking about here, and I agree with him. In Fusion, you get an initial map for each sector, kind of like how you get a map extension each time you're in a navigation room in Other M. In Fusion, however, that initial map is incomplete (unbeknownst to the player at first), and like Gabu said, you're often FORCED to go off of that map in order to reach your determined destination. The pacing is exactly as the developers intended, but you're not given a filled-in map to guide you there.

Other M shows you your destination AND the complete path to get there, and there really aren't any areas whatsoever that aren't on that initial map (aside from tiny in-room secret paths, like those short morph ball vents with an upgrade at the end). The game could've easily been made in the same fashion as Fusion, where you're given a destination and maybe even a map that LOOKS complete, but a dead-end or even a story event could cut your path short and force you to take a detour off the initial map (again, all completely planned and paced by the designers).
