Ok. I don't usually post here. I'm wondering how often this has happened to other DS Lite users.

Apparently it also happened here: http://www.gamecaption.com/2006/12/18/ds-crack-and-a-half/

Well anyway, the Nintendo warranty says it doesn't cover damages like this "THIS WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY IF THIS PRODUCT: ... IS DAMAGED BY NEGLIGENCE, ACCIDENT, UNREASONABLE USE, OR BY OTHER CAUSES UNRELATED TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS OR WORKMANSHIP; OR (e) HAS HAD THE SERIAL NUMBER ALTERED, DEFACED OR REMOVED. "

So, I'll be calling Nintendo tomorrow to see if I can get a replacement at a cheaper price than buying a new DS unless by some miracle they'll do it for free. Well anyway, the question again is "How often does this happen?" If you're wondering how it happened to me, I was playing but closed the DS to answer the door. When I opened it again to resume playing the hinge ripped off and the above image is the end result. Well anyway, in case you're interested, I bought my DS Lite day one (June 19) and it's made in China.

I've seen a couple other posts where this happened. I would call nintendo and tell them that you take very good care of it and that you have not dropped it (even if you have) and that you have no idea how this happened and that it must have been a defective product.

That sucks but I'm willing to bet that they will replace it for free if you tell them what happened.  Nintendo has fantastic customer service.

Wow, first time seeing that. The horror! But just like you said: call Nintendo and tell the story to them. And hopefully your DS will be repaired in no time and for free.

Ok. I just got back from the "Authorized Repair Center" that is officially sanctioned by Nintendo. They changed me $50 to replace my old DS Lite with a new one. BTW, all your settings from your DS Lite (and probably the Wii too) will NOT be transfered to the new replacement one. If you live near one of these repair centers, you don't have to mail your DS Lite, Wii, GBA, etc. to Nintendo where they will charge you $75 if you physically damage your Nintendo product regardless of how long it has been since you purchased it. You simply have to call Nintendo and tell them your story and they will give you an order number if a repair center is near where you live. Even though I had to pay $50, I'm just glad I don't have to pay $130 to get a new DS Lite. I hope that everyone here takes care of their DS a little better unless they want to pay $50 to replace it.

My white ds had a very fine crack a couple of months ago and got larger and eventually broke off on the same side as the picture. If you open the lite all the way a lot of times I think that you may eventually get a crack. I only play it a couple of hours a week and I am suprised about this. Anyway I had a $20 warranty from Best Buy and they replaced it on the spot and I got a black one. It seems to open and close smoother and hopefully they have addressed this problem.

I actually never opened it all the way.. After I got the replacement ds, I decided i'll just never close or open my DS ever again unless it needs to be put inside somewhere. Hopefully that will reduce the chances of the hinge breaking off like it did on my last ds. I hope Nintendo sees this before it gets out of hand.

Same thing happened with my seven year old step sister. But it was on purpose. She has majour anger issues and lost on a Super Mario Bro's level and just cracked the thing by hand. We have to pay $50 to fix it as well.

Indeed. They have amazing service.

Microsoft's service hotline: "Hello! You have reached the Microsoft Service Hotline! We would help you with your problem, but we are pretty lazy. You are better off just buying a new one. We wish you luck with your second console, and hoping that that does not break too. Enjoy!" ...(Phone hangs up).

Sadly, you're right. Microsoft made two wicked systems (Xbox, Xbox360), and I love the games for it, but when our 360 got RLOD, holy crap they weren't good when it came to talking to customers. I talked to 4 different people and they said the warranty doesn't cover it after talking for like an hour each.

The new DSi is coming out soon, so instead of getting a new lite or getting that one fixed, you could just buy the DSi.
