Most overrated Nintendo games

WARNING: This is all just my opinion. And although my opinion is always right, there's no need to flame me for my post. Also, I still think these are all great games, just overrated.

Post Nintendo games that you think are overrated and why.

Super Mario Bros 3: Super Mario World beats it in every way possible, but still everyone calls it the best 2D platformer of all time.

Donkey Kong 64: Comparing it to the older donkey kongs, it was not as good as the DKC series. Comparing it to other 3D platformers at the time, Banjo Kazooie was waaaaaaaaaay better. Plus, it was the definition of a collect-a-thon and I think it created that term now that I think about it.

Super Metroid: Just not as amazing as everyone says. Metroid Prime definately beats it.

Super Mario 64: It was good when it came out, but it has been outdone 500 times. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy. I could go on and on, tons of 3D platformers beat it, and it IS NOT the best 3D platformer of all time.

Zelda: Wind Waker: Lots of people say it kills Twilight Princess. (These are the people who follow Gamespot scores religiously) At the least I think they are equal. When it came out most people were dissapointed, but now its considered God. It's just part of the "Hate the latest Zelda until the next one comes out, then hate that one" fad. Twilight Princess will be praised when the next Zelda comes out, and that new Zelda will be bashed.

Zelda: A Link to the Past: Lots of people say it's the best Zelda ever made. No, sorry. Sure it has the most duengons, but all of them but the last one were all incredibly short compared to the newer Zeldas. Also, the items in them are usually not related to the duengon at all, which really cuts down on the puzzles in the duengons.

the problem is that you are looking at old titles and comparing them with the newversions, yeah it is better but thats because it HAS to be better, you dont want to make another game and make it worse..the reasons why these games are so great was because at the time it wasoriginaland revolutionary and it got stuck in their heads that "yeah that game was sooawesome".evil_clown63

Yeah, it's all nostalgia speaking for people. People still call old games "The best game of all time" or "The best platformer of all time" even though their have been games that are better.

I disagree with every single one except for DK64.

I think the Paper Mario series is overrated, but it's still good. Super Mario World is probably the most overrated Mario game out there, in my opinion... great game, but it didn't captivate me like SMB3.

1- I have never heard Super Mario Brothers 3 refered to as the greatest platformer of all time. It certainly was incredibly awesome especially for it's time. But to say Super Mario World beats it in every way possible is a strange statement. SMB3 was on the NES. SMW was on the SNES. Of course SMW was better!

2- I've never liked any of the Donkey Kong Country games.

3- To say Super Metroid is not as amazing as everyone says makes me wonder "how old are you"?

4- Super Mario 64 was revolutionary when it came out and is recognized as such. Why would you foolishly compare Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy? Obviously Galaxy is going to be better. It had better be with 11 years time to make improvements with.

5- Windwaker doesn't kill Twilight Princess. In fact, they are completely different not just graphically but feel as well. Windwaker was full of cartoony comic relief, whereas Twilight Princess has more of a "save the world from evil" feel. you can't compare the two. they're way too different.

6- Again, when you claim that A Link to the Past is not the best Zelda ever made, I wonder..."how old are you?"

But that's just my opinion.

What Nintendo game do I think is over-rated? Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Why the hell doesn't it have laser pointer controls? It's a brand new Wii game and it doesn't take advantage of the Wii's greatest draw-in.

SMB3 at the time it was released was the best platformer by miles. SMB3 was the game to have back in the days of the NES.

Zelda: ALttP falls into the same category. It's easily the best 2D Zelda. The game played great and introduced many Zelda trappings that are pretty much a standard to the series. Of the 3D Zeldas, WW and MM are my favorites. With WW I love the artistic design, the sailing (reminds me of the older Zeldas that were a bit more about exploration), and I think it had the best combat mechanics. With MM I think the 3 day gameplay was executed extremely well, the masks are very fun, and there were many side quests. Both games are amazing compared to TP, but I think Zelda: OoT is the only Zelda game that's overrated. It's a great game, but even when it was first released it didn't take the top spot from ALttP.

I think it's better to talk about current gen games. I find Brawl to be overrated.

Maybe I am just too use to playing MEL but I am not a pleased MEL fan.

The only real improvement I found was the single player mode. Multyplayer hell naw.

You're not really telling why the games you listed are overrated as much as you are just comparing them to other titles. And all of this is just opinionated. You act as if "people" who say this or that are claiming facts, and by doing so you are countering your opinion as if it is a fact as well. And the reasons you are giving as to why the games stack up are just so awful. It's almost like me going back to listen to the Beatles "Revolver" and saying, "Nope, sorry, but this has been done so many times since 1966!" But if I go back and appreciate the evolutionary sound, great experimentation, and realize that it's an old album....then I can really enjoy it more and say that it was way ahead of its time. That album is awesome by the way. Still is more advanced than pretty much any mainstream music you can hear these days. And its still unique and loved by many people over other albums. Just as the games you have listed...

Anyways...MY OPINION:

Super Mario Bros. 3 - probably isn't the best platformer in the Nintendo series. But it is the best game on the NES. At the time it possibly was the greatest game ever. It took the original Mario formula and took it to a new level. Awesome game.

Wind Waker - Again, my opinion... Windwaker is the best Zelda available, and Gamespot has nothing to do with why I think that. This isn't even the highest rated game on Gamespot. Anyone who lets other people decide if they enjoy a game or not even if they dislike it have no brains or something. Windwaker was a great experience.

I guess the TC is too young to have played in the times of the NES and SNES. He has grown with 3D games and so I believe that SMB3 has to look horrible to him. But the thing is that in it's day SMB3 was the best game on any console, and really revolutionary. And even today it's still great fun and one of the best 2D platformers, but you have to make abstraction of the outdated graphs. The same with ALttP it's just the best 2D zelda game and one of the best games on SNES, and in terms of fun I enjoyed it more than OoT, but what's the point in comparing a 2D with a 3D game? The new one will always look better.

And I for one prefer WW and I don't care of the ratings GS gave.

Sorry but I don't have a biography of you, so I don't know when or what you started playing. You said that SMB3 wasn't a great game cause compared to nowadays games it isn't as good, so I guessed you started playing on N64 or gamecube like others on these forums, that only like 3D.Nothing to get mad about. If you had played since the start of the NES you would understand what a change SMB3 meant.Secondly I never said youe were a graphic whore or anything like that, read better. I'd consider rephrasing that. Wind Waker beats Twilight Princess for originality and creativity. As for it being a "fad" that when the next Zelda comes out, the previous installment is praised, this is fairly untrue and only applies to a small percentage of people. And those who think Wind Waker is better than Twilight Princess are going by their own opinion and not by some score that a website gives (for the most part).

In fact, I think you should rephrase your whole thread. Your opinion is neither right nor wrong. Just merely your opinion. Besides, comparing classics like Super Metroid to Metroid Prime is quite foolish. Both games are incredible in their own times and rights.

I have to say, this is a pretty unintelligable thread that uses too many false facts. As for the opinionated parts, that's fine about what you think but it's clouded by too many odd comparisons and made up facts.

SM64 - SMG : Both are extrelemely overhyped pieces of mediocrity. SM64 help create the collection-marathon platforming genre that has plagued the genre for the last 10 years. Add in some empty and useless enviromment and you have the most boring game ever created.

All 3D zelda : Wow... Where did the spark of genius from the 2D zelda's go... Again, empty enviromment and tedius dungeon design... Ugh...

All N64 games : The worst era of nintendo gaming and they wonder why we all gave money to Sony for two gens...

Games like Super Mario Bros. 3 made a bigger impact when they were launched than the games the TC is comparing them to.

Like take super Metroid. Super Metroid was just about the most awesome thing to hit a console at the time. When Metroid Prime hit, it wasn't so revolutionary as it was a good conversion of tried and true game mechanics into 3D. Yeah, it was good, but it wasn't as revolutionary for it's time as Super Metroid was for it's time.

Yeah, sequels are built bigger and "better", but not every one makes a super impact on the gaming world. Super Mario 3, Super Metroid, and Link to the Past did make those impacts. I can't say the same for any N64 game, to be honest. First gen 3d console games left a little to be desired when compared to their polished and non-clunky 2d predecessors.
