In all honesty it would probably easier to create a list of nintendo games that are NOT overrated.

SM64 - SMG : Both are extrelemely overhyped pieces of mediocrity. SM64 help create the collection-marathon platforming genre that has plagued the genre for the last 10 years. Add in some empty and useless enviromment and you have the most boring game ever created.

All 3D zelda : Wow... Where did the spark of genius from the 2D zelda's go... Again, empty enviromment and tedius dungeon design... Ugh...

All N64 games : The worst era of nintendo gaming and they wonder why we all gave money to Sony for two gens...

sexy_chimp

You're one of the people that let nostalgia speak for them.

Go and play a 2D and a 3D zelda and compare the duengons. The 3D ones are so much more clever.

And I laugh at you calling Mario a collect-a-thon. You obviously have no idea what it means.

*virtual high five* Well said sexy_chimp. :)

You can't compare old games too new ones. But on topic, the only game for Wii I think is overrated is:

Super Paper Mario: I got kind of bored with it. I really loved PM:TTYD and when they changed the style to what it is now I was like WTF? It was just average IMO (hence the underline of my opinion) and I hope the next one goes back to turn-based action.

I agree the turn-based action was way better. I believe they will go back to the original PM formula in the next one though. :)

I disagree that Mario Galaxy beats Mario 64... Mario 64 is very open and free while Galaxy is very linear. I HATED Galaxy. I looked great and appealed to YOUNGER people because they weren't around to play Mario 64 and maybe Sunshine.

In short: Mario Galaxy failed to impress ME. I'd like there to be another game like Mario 64.

while i agree that the SMW is the best Mario game to date (or rather in terms of our arguement kicks SMB3's sorry butt), thats where our similarities end.

but i'm not here to bash. I think Metroid Prime 3 is the most overated. people here on the forums thought of it as the second coming (until smg or ssbb) when in my eyes, its nothing but a wannabe Halo. (not saying the Halo is better (its not) just saying that it fell victim to the current "just like Halo but" rule in the gaming industry right now)

Nostalgia? Nope... I've held the same opinion ever since I rented an N64 and tried Mario 64, Quest 64 & OOT. After playing a couple of hours with a friend (and realizing we spend most of that walking around), we were severely dissapointed and we all ended up getting PSones.

Mario is a collect-a-thon. The basic premise of the game is walk around, collect stuff (coins, stars, sunshines pieces) and return to your "interactive" stage select to go collect more stuff.

I have never been able to stomach playing a 3D zelda more than a couple of hours. I always end up bored out of my mind. The world seems so empty yet I am supposed to beleive this is the same world that was full of secrets in 2D?

The N64 introduced everything that was wrong with 3D gaming. The PSone did everything correctly with it. The epicness of the cinematics FF7 & Resident Evil, the free roaming 3D fighters (I still blay Bushido Blade to this day) & many more. The developpement teams for the PSone also understood that some games where better left in 2D (Castlevania 64 VS one of the greatest games of all time Symphony of the night).

The only great N64 games that were released where Pokemon Snap (I enjoy rail shooters & the concept was quite original), Goldeneye (the best multiplayer game of that generation), Paper Mario (a decent newbie RPG), Ogre Battle N64 & the VC would make me add Sin & Punishement.

Your unconditionnl love of the N64 3D crap fest suggest to me you where too young to actually play all the great SNES & NES games. You just don't get the perfection of LttP.

If you hate Nintendo games so much why are on this forum? :roll:TwilightSoilder

I bought a Wii for the VC. I am actually surprised that I enjoy so many games on it. If you look a my collection I tend to go more towards 3rd party games. I still dislike the Nintendo style of gaming. The only first party game I really enjoyed is Fire Emblem. The only reason I love it so much is because Shining Force is discontinued. I have not been able to motivate myself to play TP. I will be getting Brawl shortly as a party game.

dude you know a link to the past is the best when one of the lead producers of the game stated maybe a few months ago that he would love to remake a link to the past with modern grapchics THAT game would be the most epic game of all time!

Well if you like the Wii for the VC then talk about that on these forums. Don't bash the awesome Wii games!!!!! Also, I checked your collection and you don't even have SMG. So, what does that say about your character that you don't even have the game and you are calling it s***. Also, don't even bother getting SSBB. Judging from all you've said someone like you wouldn't care for Brawl. And, the last thing we need around here is another guy spouting off how much it sucks when in reality it rocks. So, do us all a favor and don't get it so we won't have to hear more Brawl hate. Thanks a bunch. :)

I disagree with every single one except for DK64.

TDLlama

Yeah, same for me.. :P I don't think any Nintendo game is overrated, actually. There were a lot of people saying Kid Icarus was an awesome game before it came to the VC, though. I don't agree about that. There are way better NES games than that.

When all else fails go to the "too young" argument, despite me saying multiple times in this thread that I have been around since the beginning of the SNES.

And having played LttP when it came out and just a few weeks ago, it's hard not to laugh at your perfect statement. The duengons were all short and to be honest, almost stupid compared to the 3D Zeldas. It's basically running around getting keys, pushing the occasional statue or stepping on a switch or whatever.

Stop being such an elitist.

sexy_chimp, when you claim that A Link to the Past contained "short" length and "stupid" dungeon design when compared to "all" the 3-D Zelda titles, you know full well you're going to have people come out and argue their opinion.

There's no need to call someone an "elitist" when honestly you're being quite elitist yourself.

In my opinion however, I would expect any 3-D incarnation of Zelda or Metroid made years later to be a vast improvement in every regard.

Personally, I enjoy Link to the Past on a completely different scale than I do Ocarina or Windwaker or Twilight Princess. Just as I enjoy Super Metroid on a completely different scale than I did with Metroid Prime. It's impossible not to since 2-D gameplay and 3-D gameplay are both so different.

I respect your opinion sexy_chimp, and I hope you can respect mine as well.

Donkey Kong 64: Comparing it to the older donkey kongs, it was not as good as the DKC series. Comparing it to other 3D platformers at the time, Banjo Kazooie was waaaaaaaaaay better. Plus, it was the definition of a collect-a-thon and I think it created that term now that I think about it.

sexy_chimp

I agree with you there. Albeit the multiplayer was still awesome.

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is really overrated. I liked the game, but I thought it was horribly tedious towards the end and actually brings a potentially great game to a total halt. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just overrated and by no means deserves the 9's it's been getting.

WARNING: This is all just my opinion. And although my opinion is alwayswrong, there's no need to flame me for my post. Also, I still think these are all great games, just overrated.

Super Mario Bros 3

Donkey Kong 64

Super Metroid

Super Mario 64

Zelda: Wind Waker

Zelda: A Link to the Past

sexy_chimp

1) Agreed

2) Agreed

3) No. MP and Super Metroid are equal. (besides they are completely different games... What were you thinking when you compared them?!?)

4) Eh... never really like the Banjo games so I can't comment on that... Sunshine was good and I feel it was under-rated... SMG is way over-rated and is in no way, shape, or form better than SM64...

5) Um... it does kill TP... by a long shot too... TP was garbage... I'm sorry, not it wasn't, cause I'm pretty sure garbage is better than TP...

6) Yeah it is short, is that really a problem though? Also, some of the best parts about the game was that you only had to deal with lengthy dialogue... that you could skip... No annoying long cutscenes or unskippable dialogue here (I'm looking at you OOT)

I simply like some games better than others. I agree that SMW is better than SMB3. And, yes, Donkey Kong 64 was far inferior to its DKC predecessors. However, I still consider Super Metroid far superior to Metroid Prime. Searching for Samus' upgrades to delve deeper into a well-designed world kept me glued to the screen; it also had some of the best boss battles of all time and a haunting soundtrack.

I consider The Wind Waker to be better than twilight Princess. Its bright and colorful world just seemed more befitting to the world of Zelda. It also has excellent animations and a battle system that fast-paced and fun. The non-playable characters also had a lot more personality, IMO.

Everybody's got their own opinion. Myself, I loved Twilight Princess just as much as Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker. I love SSBB just as much if not more so then SSBM. Mario Galaxy is just as fun and addicting as Super Mario Bros 3. And I think MP3 is just as enjoyable as Super Metroid (MP3 doesn't have the classic Metroid feel to it but its still damn fun). The only thing that makes the older games seem more appealing is nostalgia. In truth, the games we're playing today are just as good as their older counterparts.

In my opinion, these are the most overrated nintendo games on the wii.

Super mario galaxy- Everyone said it was awesome and it got great reviews, so i bought it, tried it, and i haven't touched it since.

Metroid prime 3: Corruption- Same thing with this one. It got great reviews, and it turned out to be a mediocore shooter that could have easily landed on the N64

I do agree that the TC is looking at these games from a modern perspective, which dulls the impact a bit. Super Mario Bros 3 was very advanced for its time and really expanded the formula... it was one of the best games of its time. Does Super Mario World better it? Absolutely, but there was a big technological jump between the two. Anyway...

Super Mario 64 isn't nearly as good as people make it out to be... I think maybe it came out at the right time, but I just didn't think it was that engaging. To this day, I have never gone out of my way to finish it. DK 64 was another disappointment, particularly after the amazing DKC game... the game was pretty much a mess IMO, and I'm not sure why it gets the press it does. I'll have to go back and play that one again sometime because I didn't give it 100 chances like I did SM64.

And I'll probably get modded for this or something, but I think the entire Metroid series is garbage. The only reason I have any Metroid games is that my gf likes them for some reason, but I just don't see the allure. I haven't given the 3D Metroids the chance I should have and I'll admit that, but after Metroid, Metroid 2 and Super Metroid and Zero Hour (or whatever the GBA one was called), I just can't bring myself to care about Samus.

you can't say that mario 64 isn't the best platformer of all time comparing it to newer platformers and obviously u can't compare it to mario galaxy when the basics are taken from mario 64

still i loved what u said about zelda still that doesn't happen to me the last zelda I loved was Ocarina the rest are OK but not as good as OoT, I liked Minish Cap and probably Phantom Hourglass (though I haven't played that one yet)

Mario 64 is lame comparing it to Ocarina of time that came out 2 years later, mario 64 seemed like an arcade one compared to oot, no story (not that mario should have but thats a point) and zelda was a better platformer without being a platformer

About what you said about Super Mario 64: I agree that it's not the best 3D platformer. But I think it's so highly thought of because you have to appreciate it for its time. One of the first (or possibly the first) 3D platformer game.

Mario 64: I liked it, i think its a great game but i dont love it, it was the first to do 3-D and it did it right and Galaxy just improved on that and i love galaxy for that

Zelda: i cant really say anythign its not my cup of tea ill play it until i get frustrated and thats it, my bro loves them though hes link and im mario thats our kinda gmaing

Metroid: ehhh we both feel the same on this we get to certain point and then give up , but the games are good none the less

DK64 i only played it a little bit but i like DKC better so yea

thing is with these games mention is they set the standard because they were the first to do something and everyone likes them and all the sequels are meant to be better but it all goes back to the original and i honestly believe SMB3 is the greatest 2d mario ever amde one of the greatest games, mario world was good i liked it cuz of yoshi but it wasnt fun as SMB3 for me thats maybe because im a type of gamer who loves them power ups and SMB3 had it

And anyone who say Brawl is overrated just doesnt like the series in general or doesnt like the pure craziness and fun it brings

as for my overrated nintendo games would be : pikmin i just dont get it i never been good with games that deal with micro management, Animal crossing its just sooo dumb, and Warioware, its good but honestly its not that good its just a random game but too random

That's pretty much what I meant about coming out at the right time. The world hadn't seen many games like this (it was not the first 3D platformer, but it was one of the first and one of the more successful ones) before and I think the possibilities were more exciting than the game. It was OK, but I don't think it was great.

Interesting read.

I disagree though.

Super Mario 3 is vastly better than Super Mario World no matter which you slice it. Mario World is great, don't get me wrong. Mario 3 though is just that good.

And Mario 64 was amazing. It laid the groundwork for games like Banjo-Kazooie to be good. But Mario 64 is definitely not overrated.

I gotta say sexy_chimp, I agree with your take on Wind Waker. It was obviously a very well reviewed game, but among gamers, there was serious disappointment and even hatred for it, that simmered down over the years and eventually disappeared once Twilight Princess came out.

I can only think of one doozy off the top of my head.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door- The majority of people who loved it and thought it was so fresh, didn't play the one for N64, which makes sense since it came out at the end of its lifespan. I did however, and playing the GC version felt like a big time rehash and turned me off for the most part. Good game, but the initial reception showed how many people missed out on the first game.

Pokemon (series) by far to me is the most overrated Nintendo game. I've played a couple of the games and honestly it's just a basic rpg collect-a-thon. A not to far second is Kid Icarus....don't get me wrong they should revive it maybe a prince of persia esque style would be cool....but that game just uses an insane difficulty to polish up a dull game.

Twilight Princess: It was good but it for sure doesnt deserve the perfect 10s it got. A Major disapointment for something being hyped as the best Zelda ever when it didnt even end up passing its predecesor

Super Metriod: For some reason I just dont like this game as much as some of the other Metriods. I would honestly take Zero Mission over it

RE4: Not exactly a Nintendo game but its on the Wii and the gamecube. Its good, definatly the best RE game, but it doesnt deserve some of the praise it gets, Best game of the last gen? Nowhere near.

WARNING: This is all just my opinion. And although my opinion is always right, there's no need to flame me for my post. Also, I still think these are all great games, just overrated.

Post Nintendo games that you think are overrated and why.

Super Mario Bros 3: Super Mario World beats it in every way possible, but still everyone calls it the best 2D platformer of all time.

Super Metroid: Just not as amazing as everyone says. Metroid Prime definately beats it.

Super Mario 64: It was good when it came out, but it has been outdone 500 times. Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy. I could go on and on, tons of 3D platformers beat it, and it IS NOT the best 3D platformer of all time.

Zelda: Wind Waker: Lots of people say it kills Twilight Princess. (These are the people who follow Gamespot scores religiously) At the least I think they are equal. When it came out most people were dissapointed, but now its considered God. It's just part of the "Hate the latest Zelda until the next one comes out, then hate that one" fad. Twilight Princess will be praised when the next Zelda comes out, and that new Zelda will be bashed.

Zelda: A Link to the Past: Lots of people say it's the best Zelda ever made. No, sorry. Sure it has the most duengons, but all of them but the last one were all incredibly short compared to the newer Zeldas. Also, the items in them are usually not related to the duengon at all, which really cuts down on the puzzles in the duengons.

NOt that it means much, but i shall give my opinion on your opinion, then provide an opinion of my own to your topic titles :D

SMB3: I completely agree. SMB3 is an amazing game, absolutly incredible. The game has so much charm, some awesome secrets, and some of the most catchy music and memorable platforming.. however, SMW is, imo, the greatest 2d mario game. It took everything SMB3 did and improved on it(adding a much needed save feature, tons more levels and secrets). It also was way more colourul, which really helps a game like mario.

DK 64: I also agree. I was never a huge fan of Dk64, while DKC was incredible(and still remains incredible to this day). Though, its been too long since i have played DK64 to do a proper comparison

SUper Metroid: This i completely disagree with. MP beats it in immersion, but other then that it's hard to compare them. 2D vs 3D can be rather difficult. Prime was brilliant, and so was SM. It's really hard to compare them imo.. but i certainly disagree that with your statement that it's not as good as most claim. It really is, imo, one of the greatest games to ever be created. Incredible atmosphere, music, boss fights, powerups, collectables and challenge. It's 2D gaming at its finest.

SM64: I disagree only partly. It has been outdone, but not by many titles. DK64 was not a superior game, nor were the Banjo games(though they were close).. SMS was definitly not as good.. it looked better, but it ddin't have the variety in levels, which really hurts a mario game(which gets alot of its charm from its diverse environments). SMG, though, is certainly superior. SM64 also does recieve alot of praise due to how revolutionary it was.. which should count for something.

Zelda WW: i couldn't agree more. It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that WW was universally hated.. Anyways, it's certainly nowhere near as good as TP. I understand how some can prefer it, but as a zelda game its inferior. TP is the ****c zelda formula refined to its finest.

Zelda LttP: Certainly the game is not as long as newer zeldas, but that's not how we shoudl define the best. The variety in LttP was there, and the puzzels that were there were quite challenging. Plus, there always felt like there was more to discover in hyrule then in some of the more recent games(or, at least comparable).. certainly, hyrule felt more populated. LttP is not the best zelda, but it is a masterpiece. An incredible 2D game, and i think it surpasses at least some of the 3D zelda's.

I'm not sure what i would call the most overrated wii game.. most wii games, imo, get too much hate. So it's hard to say.
