Motion controls are good and all, but not for every game

The Wii's motion-based controls are good and all for game like Twilight Princess, Warioware and etc, but they should have no place in a game like Metal Slug Anthology. I consider myself a purist and try to be as much of one as I can be, so the control schemes for that game just didn't work for me. I'm not alone in my opinion as IGN mentions it as well in their review of MSA for the PS2. Here are some quick quotes:

'During the debut of Wii last November, arcade enthusiasts were treated to the first release of SNK's Metal Slug Anthology; a 10 year anniversary package including seven true-to-arcade emulations of over a decade of Metal Slug goodness. The only problem: Control. Despite being an arcade shooter that makes use of only three buttons and a joystick, Metal Slug Anthology didn't adapt well to motion control, and couldn't make use of any previously-released arcade sticks, making the anthology anything but perfect for hardcore coin-op enthusiasts.'

'As a true collection of the Metal Slug series, the PS2 version stands tall above the rest... the ability to use the control set-up you want is priceless.'

I've voiced my concerns over this before and have been shot down by the more hardcore Wii fans of this board. If you like motion-based controls, then fine. I would at least like to have seen the option for some sort support for a more 'old school' control scheme - ie C l a s s i c Controller support. I hope the PS2 version sells the most. That should send a message to Nintendo that fans of the game will not stand for the exclusion of support for a more 'c l a s s i c' control scheme.

For what it's worth, I agree with you, 100 per cent. The controls can be overkill on some games. To me, they shouldn't force controls just because they are gesture based, or motion based. I worry that with sports titles, there are going to be a ton of these intances. Sure, making athrowing motion to throw to first base makes sense, but what if I have to put the remote over my head to catch a flyball. That seems like too gimmicky.

If you don't like the way the console is controlled don't buy the console.

You don't seem to understand what I'm trying to say. I won't bother explaining this issue to you anymore.

I dont think there is really any reason tobring a game to the Wii if it doesn't use the unique features of the WiiMote. In the case of rereleased old games... I don't really care. Yeah, the classic controller should be available for games that weren't designed for them in the first place, but thats hardly an argument as to why a developer couldn't design any style of game from the ground up to use motion.

When used tastfully motion control brings alot to the table.

I agree with you. Luckily, Nintendo isn't forcing it on every game, not even the ones they make. Fire Emblem for the Wii isn't even supposed to have any motion controls, you just play it with the C l a s s i c or Gamecube controller.

I agree absolutely 100%. If they force the controls onto every single game that comes out, it just won't work. SSBB for example. The controls are great and a lot of fun, but they need to be careful with it.

I agree for the most part to what you said. What irks me though is that they excluded any sort option for a c l a s s i c control scheme for those who may not want to use gesture-based motions. I'm all for motion-based controls, but I feel that certain games - namely the more traditional side-scrollers - should have classic support as well. Take, for example, the VC games. They all have classic controller support. I feel that MSA should've been given similar treatment.

I like the Wiimote but so far a lot of games have kind of overdone it with the motion control ( I'm looking at you SSX Blur ). I also agree that you should have the option to use the Classic Controller for some games( great example with Metal Slug ).

I, too, agree. Before the console launched, I thought the motion controls would be used in certain games, not all of them.

I thought MSA allowed for controll with the wiimote (using it sideways like a control pad) without the use of motion.

EDIT: Ok, just read this from the gamespot review "....Thankfully, Metal Slug Anthology can also be played with the GameCube controller, which proves to be closest to arcade controls, though surprisingly, there's no support for the classic controller."

Well, I guess GC control is not too bad. Pretty silly not supporting the clasic controller. Hopefully as the system matures and some of the "gimickyness" is gone, we'll get some solid games with appropriate controls, and full length, non-minigames games!

The closest control scheme that MSA has to a standard controller requires you to wiggle/shake/hit the wiimote to lob grenades. I think there was also GC controller support, but the ergonomics of that GC gamepad did not work well for that sort of game and I don't think the dpad was supported. Movement is done via the analog stick only.

Thanks to the rest of the people in this thread to agree with me on this issue. Let's try to keep this discussion logical and constructive. Maybe one of the GS editors may notice it and write up an article or something about it. :)

I guess it could be argued that without motion controls, the Wii is just a gamecube. The graphics are no better than the cube. I have already said that I agree with the original poster, but I can see both sides of the argument.

I completely agree. It's rediculous that they didn't have the Cla.ssic Controller as an option. Many older games are perfect in their natural gamepad forms. Forcing motion sensing on the older games is stupid. Wii games should be controlled by the Wiimote- not old cla.ssics that were designed from the ground up for buttons and joysticks.
