Seriously, Time Trials. I got so freaken good at this game after doing all the time trials for a character or kart/bike or something that I wanted to unlock. You'll teach yourself after beating all the hard difficulty ghosts (the ones you unlock after the first ghost. You'll know it's the hard ghost because the lap time will make your jaw drop at first!)
I prefer bike with nunchuck setup and if i'm going straight i'm wheelie'n. If i'm making any sort of turn, i'm drifting. Then theres tips on how to avoid certain items...
-the blue shell, brake hard and get the people in 2nd, and hopefully 3rd to take it with you
- pow block, wheelie right before the 3rd smash to avoid
-look behind and pay attention to upcoming bullets, stars, and giants
- keep a banana or shell behind you to take projectiles being fired at you.
The main thing is to KEEP YOUR SPEED. You suffer lots when hitting obsicles, going into the grass, falling off course, and of course getting hit by items. Every second counts!
I'll assume you know the boost-start technique. I'm in the process of trying to get star rankings on the mirror cup. This means that you need good lap-times as well as 60 points at the end of the cup as well as a lot of luck and mercy from the cpu players. I never use the bikes (I don't like the shallow angle they take on drifts) and I usually use someone in the mid-weight range (Mario, Luigi, Peach etc.). You have to drift as often as possible and also gain the blue boost levels from these where possible. Dangle bananas behind you, let shells circle you, try to get drafting boosts. In other words, you gotta' work your ass off to stay competitive - but even that's no guarantee with MarioKart. I've moved on to Sonic racing because of MarioKart's over reliance on weapons.
I'm not on mirror yet but I'm stuck on 150cc Retro races. Like the leaf and lightning cup. I don't use drift but I used it on Mario Kart DS. Whenever I drift on Wii I go out of control.6connormattPractice. It's totally different from the drift in Mario Kart DS. Drifting in the Wii version doesn't allow you to snake effectively (thank goodness), except in a select few places. You'll need the almost constant boosts to increase your lead enough so that you have some leeway in case anything happens (namely blue shell).
Also, always play defense if you're in the lead. Don't let any item or item box go to waste. You should always have a banana or shell trailing behind you, and if you get another one while you're already trailing one, drop your current one in a strategic spot and use the new one.

I've read somewhere that the lap times have no influence on the star ranking. The only 3 factors seem to be:
- your total points
- amount of time spent in 1st place
- amount of time spent in sand/mud/grass/any surface that slows you down (the more the worse obviously)
That's what I've understood anyway.
Use the nunchuck instead of the wheel.

I have at least 1 star on each cup, using only the Wii Wheel setup. Don't listen to this guy!

Yeah, I also have stars in most of the cups, and I don't listen to much of the traditional advice. I use Yoshi with a standard kart and the Wii Wheel.... The most important thing is to know how to use weapons effectively.its more beneficial to use the classic controller than the steering wheel since oyu can drift and get a boost after you drift. hmm......can you do tricks with the classic controller like you can with the wheel?
meh, i cant really remember much myself. its been a while and i have excellent rankings in everything except i think the last 2 retro stages. why dont you try checking out this mario kart wii guide, courtesy of our cousins over at gamefaqs!
You can still drift with the Wii Wheel. There's nothing about using motion controls to handicap you except your ability to use the steering wheel.its more beneficial to use the classic controller than the steering wheel since oyu can drift and get a boost after you drift. hmm......can you do tricks with the classic controller like you can with the wheel?

I gotta start using the babys a bit more. That bullet bike is good too. And I always use the steering wheel. I don't have the classic controler either.

To tell you the truth I also found myself doing better with wiimote/nunchuck instead of wheel.

I don't realy like using the Nunchuck so much anymore. I just find it confusing.
I just don't have the hands.
Well I am gonna rank the steering wheel and the nunchunk and Wii-mote.
Nunchuck & Wii-Mote- 8/10
Wii Wheel-9/10
Wii- Mote- 7/10
You probably won't agree with these but their my rankings. 8)
I've been practising now. I'm still using Automatic, but I will start using Manual soon. In 150cc, I only got the lightning cup to go. Then the stupid Mirror mode... God do I hate that one.
I personally found the Gamecube controller to give me optimal control, but some people out there seem to perform perfectly fine with the Wii Wheel.
About the karts/bikes:
The Bowser Bike (Flame Runner in US) or Mach Bike (both on manual) are undoubtedly the best choices if you're going for the fastest times. When I last checked (and that was about a year ago), nearly all world records were in the hands of these 2 vehicles, save a few tracks with Bullet Bike and Torpedo records. In clans, there are but very few people who use vehicles outside the Bowser and Mach bikes. So if you really want to get things over with in GP mode, these are the obvious choices, although the Bowser Bike´s slow acceleration can hurt you when you´re hit by an item (in which case you should hold R + A to build up a speed boost that will get you going faster).

Were is the R button? I've never seen a R button. Or are you talking about a different controler?
DraugenCP
Yeah, on the GC controller. It's the button you use to drift on manual. I think it's B on the Wiimote.
I want one of those controllers.
