I think you guys may be looking at this the wrong way. From what I understand, they completely canned the handheld altogether, and are not planning on releasing it at all. It's all part of research and development. Just because something is created, doesn't mean it has to be released. Iwata commented that there has been a lot of hardware they've created over the years that they never released.

And certainly, Nintendo isn't lacking the funds to spend on R&D.

REVOLUTIONfreak

This. Nintendo had an idea for a handheld, decided to draw up plans for it, and then cancelled it due to the DS's success. Cancelling a handheld =/= a new handheld is coming out/being announced.

Yes, there will be many more handhelds to come from Nintendo in the coming years. But that is NOT what this announcement was stating, rather the opposite.

IMO They should of stopped manufacturing the ds lite and sell only the dsi along with the new handheld. Gameboy lovers should already buy the ds lite.

But like everyone we have to have our profit first. I mean think of all the time to make the dsi. They are going to wait till dsi sales go down.

This is my opinion on the Dsi and it seems you all care alot about my opinion. You are all looking at it from a business perspective to see which way Nintendo could earn the most money. I AM NOT. I never said that Nintendo cares what I think as a consumer. I'm saying from the perspective of a customer what i wish Nintendo would do. UNDERSTAND?

ALL i was saying in the first place is what i wish Nintendo would do, and from what i heard when i watched the video first the console was already finished so i thought they should have instead been working on their current console the Ds and DSi instead of making the next console, or if they were gng to finish the next console so early to not make the Dsi so sales could continue dropping and put a feature similar to the Dsi shop on the next console or to have only made one or no upgrades for the DS.

*Sigh*, Next gen, I'm skipping the first two iterations of the handheld and going for the third one.... Seems the most prudent thing to me.destroyerHHH
You'll be waiting like 4 years during that time, amiright? I dunno about you, but that's too long for me.

There's usually multiple branches of companies that work on different things rather than one branch that only works on one thing at a time. I doubt the development of the DSi, their new system, or their games had any effect on each other.

I'd get the first iteration, then wait for the last, maybe getting the second if the first becomes to cumbersome like what happened with the DS.

I never said there was only one branch that works on everything. And yes the 3 could have an effect on one another, a part of a company that produces Ds games would prbly have to be split off for work on Dsi download games, a part of Nintendo that works with the games could be split off to try producing early models of games for the next handheld to be made, etc.

Even if it were announced and still being developed, it's not like they'd release the thing tomorrow. They (Nintendo) would probably hype the gizmo over the next couple of years and provide me with unlimited ammo to fuel my pessimistic DSi views.

I just hope the new handheld is an updated VIrtual Boy :)

I'm excited to see the new handheld. Since the DS has 2 screens and one of them is a touchscreen I wonder what Ninty thought of for the new handheld. :D
The only problem is that I'm not ready to let go of my DS lite...2 years of wonderful memorizes... I can wait till 2 more years for the next handheld since I'm planning to buy a DSi. Not sure if I should buy one if Ninty can release it any time soon. I agree with most people here. Releasing the DSi right before planning to announce a new handheld was a bad idea. :(

[QUOTE="Apocalypse97"]

[QUOTE="hydralisk86"] Basically the xbox 360 will last until 2015, and it will have motion sensor technology, there was another battlefield game, and the next nintendo handheld was delayed from being released due to the success of the nintendo dsi.hydralisk86

So that means that we can expect to see the next nintendo handheld at E3 2010? Maybe even sooner...

Hopefully sooner. My ds lite got cracks in it and black spots, and i don't want to dish out more money for a dsi, or get it repaired.

But you'll dish out even more money for a new handheld?

They didn't announce a new handheld, they announced that the handheld they planned to release was canned because of the DSi's success.

Yes, I'd pay for the new handheld. I don't want to spend more money on a handheld which obviously had improvements, but was the same type of handheld I had before.

And what happens if this new handheld is some sort of DS-like device as well? Have they actually shown what it looks like?

If it is a new handheld, then I might not be able to play the games that it plays using the DS right now. So I might have no choice but to buy it.

True; however, you still didn't answer my question. (Hopefully if it is different, it'll have backwards compatibility)

I saw the video, it didn't show the design for the new handheld.

yeah, if they had released that new DS it would have majorly annoyed the people who had rushed out to buy a DSi, but having finished it i doubt they will delay it for too long, i reckon they will release it next spring, sometime around then cause they will most likely just wait for the DSi sales to fall a little bit and then launch the new one. glad i read this, i was thinking about buying a DSi, now ill just wait ;)

either she got it wrong or gamespot got it wrong...

according to gamespot, nintendo started a new handheld project but gave up in the beginning because of the current DSs "momentum".

article here

since GS's article has iwata quotes, i beliebe in them more than in IGN... for now

I wonder how long they had the new handheld finished for? I mean, it couldn't have taken THAT long to prototype the DSi as it was just a hardware and case varient instead of something completely new. It also raises questions aboutif they're going to keep what they currently have, or keep the ideas and create something new again.

I really think that could work out. Only thing is it would take a ton of memory for large consumers like me to store all that. I'm thinking they should make a game system where you can download games on the go and they're stored on an online network, like e-mails are stored in an inbox. Then get some wireless providers to endorse the system, give them a cut of the sales so that the console can use their wireless signal anywhere so they could access their games stored online and shop where they want, when they want.

If i were Nintendo, I wouldn't say anything about it until DS sales drop. That way people won't be saying "Well, I want a DSi, but now that i know they're coming out with a new handheld, i'll wait." Plus Nintendo could just surprise everybody out of the blue with it :P
