this is a rumor, but the whole "nintendo's summit will be better than their last two E3s glued together" (NGamer) and the rumors of a "new platform" at the summit or GDC are starting to get pretty big now

www.gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=114390

Has a link to a french site saying devs already have DS2 dev kits. Its in french, so you're gonna have to trust GoNintendo on this one unless you read french

Hmm, while the DSi is a new intriguing platform, as an owner and lover of DSiware, i wouldn't be against a DS2 this fall

People say, why make a new console when you're on top?

They have a whole lot of competition from Apple, Microsoft just unveiled Xbox Live games on WinMo7 for this fall, and Nintendo probably wants to get the new console out sooner to keep up

Nintendo came out with the "3rd pillar" DS when GBA was on top, it sold well. they came out with the "3rd pillar" DSi when DS was on top its sold very well, so releasing this console this fall wouldn't be a bad decision at all

People think Nintendo can't pull this off.

Thought? Want the new handheld this fall?

I for one, hope it has a slider layout with dual touch screens (ala the slide phones like SideKicks or Samsung Moments except with a second screen instead of a QWERTY pad) and Nvidia Tegra

If this turns out to be true I predict a late 2010/early 2011 release.

- Graphics: I'm going to set my expectations low and say that it will match the PSP in order to avoid being disappointed. But I'm fully aware that the Tegra 2 can roughly match the Wii's graphical performance so I wouldn't be surprised if it does that either. Based on the reports, Tegra 2 should be able to pump out well over 50 million triangles per second. In comparison, the PSP peaks at 30 million and the GC at 12 (its hardware was very well optimized though which is the reason games looked that good).

- Online: Better infrastructure and integration. Looking at the current set-up of the WFC, I'd say that there's no other way to go but up. Get rid of the friend codes. DSWare and Virtual Handheld would be great.

- "Innovation": Better camera and an accelerometer (think iPhone).

- Enough buttons for traditional gaming.

- Two bigger screens or one big screen that can be tilted sideways to play DS games (backwards compatibility is a must).

- Bigger internal storage. I predict something around 8GB

- Still uses carts.

Sounds awesome, but it seems too soon. I doubt it will roll out to shelves this year but I dont doubt it may be unveiled this year.

on the GC triangle figure....the reaosn its so low is because thats an actual in game figure..not a benchmark figure. neither the PS2 nor the xbox got anywhere near the 50-60 million quoted by sony or the 100-120 odd million MS quoted (at least i think they came up with...im hazy on exact figures). it was also conservative....i think factor 5 managed to squeez more than 12million out of the GC for their second star wars game. as for the DS2...its still rumours but nintendo do seem to be stirring. there are whispers...tales from the east. many speak of forces moving against the enemy and so on (all lord of the rings jabber :P). this is nintendo though.....they could just be sending out cardboard boxes labeled "DS2" just for kicks and giggels :P.

Heck , if it uses Tegra APX2600 now which is cheap it'll be near Wii level.

Well, if its got Tegra, it could easily handle a Super Smash Bros title

And Nintendo could make the controls work with no touch screen controls

Thats another thing, I dont think theyre abandoning touchscreen functionality, they probably want their handheld fanbase that started on the DS in tact.

I didn't say no touch screen on the device, i said no touch screen controls in a handheld Smash Bros title

Of course they'll have touch screens on the device

I don't think they'd force touch controls into a handheld Smash Bros, they barely put in motion controls in Brawl, they know it isn't ideal

I'm not doubting that they have dev kits already. But what I think is that they may release the idea or a very early prototype at E3. Though it won't come out in Japan until late 2011 and summer time in the U.S./Europe. That is my prediction. BUT as for specs and options here is what I think....

  • Graphics surpassing the PSP
  • still retain buttons but have a more responsive and human fingers are able to touch so more buttons are available
  • Retain a nice long battery life
  • More of a color palette available
  • Camera, mic, motion sensing, vibration?
  • Online play needs a complete an utter overhaul, no friend codes, and friendly interface
  • Use carts, no download only please
  • Nice internal hard drive
  • Easy PC interface

Well with the better hardware they can pull of better graphics, better battle physics, plus bigger screens to see the action, maybe 4.2

There was a fan mock-up I saw a few years ago that, instead of having two screen, there just one big one. The idea was that this would be the front of the console and it would normally cover the buttons. Until you twisted it 90 degrees. This would make the handheld completely unique I think.

Well whatever it looks like, I just hope the displays (and touchscreen) get an upgrade in resolution

I think it's probably going to be released later this year or in 2011. I would prefer that it keep the flip design, that way it protects the screen. It should have a better camera, motion sensor, High-Res graphics, Dual Touchscreens, and force feedback. I'm also hoping that they will include dual PSP-style analog nubs, but make it so that it's harder for your thumbs to slip off.

I would probably trade in my DSi for one, but ONLY if it had full backwards compatibility with the DS and DSiWare.

Nintendo wouldn't release a handheld that has the same or close to the same graphics as the Wii...

^ Bookmarked for when the next handheld is unveiled. GC graphics also count as being close to Wii.

As long as such hardware fit into their philosophy of being immediately profitable at a price reasonable to consumers, I don't see why they wouldn't really.

Proof?

Honestly with mobile tech that is as powerful as the Wii being so very cheap, they'd be silly not too.

I mean really do we want to graduate from N64 hardware in the DS to Dreamcast in the DS2?

darth-pyschosis

Dreamcast? Mmm, Shenmue mobile... oh sorry, my mind wanders.

I personally wouldn't mind Dreamcast quality to be honest. Though it is definitely silly when mobile hardware today is capable of so much more. And I seriously doubt Nintendo has a rule that their handhelds have to be significantly behind their consoles. As I recall at least some of the Game Boy's specs were actually better than the NES. The limiting factor was its primitive LCD.

the way i see it, this nex gen handheld will be at least as powerful as the original iPhone (400Mhz CPU, 200Mhz GPU, 128MB RAM) coz people simply ask more of their mobile devices now than when the DS came out in 2004, case in point the DSi improves its hardware to actually handle the web and DLC.

I figure theres probably nothing better than the dual-core Tegra 2 for a new DS, seems like a good match to me

Wasn't the gameboy essentially a handheld NES? That was released during the lifetime of the NES.

What's strange is that the DSi XL is already out in Japan, March 5th for the UK, but no date for the US...still, even I doubt that the big N would drop a Megaton on the US with a new system sooner than everyone expects...but how sweet would that be..??? :)
