bring back the huge exploratory 3d worlds. i'm thinking they either go this route or something totally new and fresh, like a pikmin-influenced mario like that old 128 video.

the "mario in space" has succesfully run its course. best two video games of all time imo. only complaint is the lack of exploration/secrets due to the brilliant use of small planets and lack of back-tracking. it worked for mario in space, but i'd like to see a true Mario64 successor. No Mario on Isle Delphin, no Mario in Space, bring him back to the mushroom kingdom and fill it with hidden boxes, clouds, and pipes.

We have a like a dozen Mario games on the Wii. I can't believe I'm saying this but: No more...unless it's Paper Mario 4. I will take that.

Well, honestly, I couldn't see them making another Mario Galaxy, regardless of how great the two games are anyway. I'm sure they'll come out with something fresh next time.

And I totally agree with you. I'd love to see another Mario game with a huge exploratory world. I have no idea what the exact concept would be, but I think I'd settle for just about anything ;)

Super Mario Deminsion. Mario travels two Alternate Realities/Parallel Deminsions of the Mushroom Kingdom to defeat Bowser and Save Peach.

It keeps some gameplay elements from the Super Mario Galaxy series but adds it in the Mushroom Kingdom and you can have different art styles and change the physics.

It could also give the designers the freedom to go crazy with the designs because they are in parallel deminsions so they can think up whatever they want.

That's not really true, Mario has always been a game that lends itself to doing whatever it wants. These space themed levels could have been in the mushroom kingdom, there is no set topography or style for the mushroom kingdom. Like in Mario 64, you had the innards of clocks, levels full of water, ice mountains, volcanoes and so on. They can do whatever they want. The only thing the Galaxy theme did was allow them to use the themes of space in every level if they wanted. Whether the story says their in the mushroom kingdom or not, they could do the more "open" levels of Mario 64 or they could do the more traditional Mario levels. Location doesn't matter, its only matters what they want to do with level design.

Mario's been back to the Mushroom Kingdom many times (NSMBWii, for example). What you're asking for is basically a sequel to Mario 64. That's different.

Agreed. The Mushroom Kingdom is flexible enough to the point where the level designers can go wild with making creative levels. The entirety of Super Mario 64 was based on being inside of a castle full of paintings, for crying out loud, and the whole Mushroom Kingdom world has changed so much over the years, that not much is out of the realm of possibility. The advantages that the Galaxy theme brings to the table is the ability to make the gravity as a crucial gameplay element and the 'planet-hopping' aspect, which is pretty much going traveling long distances between separate parts of a single stage, more reasonable.

Still, with Nintendo's creavity, I think there are ways to incorporate a lot of what Galaxy does to a more traditional Mario setting. While that would probably mean that Nintendo's level designers will have to cut back on the space-related elements some, the mechanics doesn't have to be killed entirely, as the Mushroom Kingdom can support a variety of different worlds as well as any game-related setting.

As long as Nintendo doesn't confine the game within a sole area, such as a tropical island, again, I wouldn't worry about the level design creativity in a Mario game anytime soon. :P

Where the game is going to be set is probably just the result of how the gameplay is going to be.

My only wish is for them to not use a gimmick like they did in Sunshine, in that case just do SMG3.

i've been wondering. Mario was at the castle, an Island, and in space twice. Where are they gonna go from there? How can Nintendo top Super Mario Galaxy(2)?

well, they don't have to discard them either, just like they haven't discarded 2D gameplay on galaxy 2 :P

Mushroom Kingdom was fun and versatile but I don't see the shift to new realms to be damaging to the series. I love all the core Mario games and think they've created interesting environments to complement each one. It's one of the few series that stays fresh whilst maintaining the same core gameplay.

What I'd like to see is a new frustration meter in Mario games. After the first time you hear "Thank you Mario! Butour princess is in another castle" you get a small amount added to a rage meter. By the eigth castle it's full and unleashes beserker Mario mode. Same as Star Power but Mario flashes red, screams and destroys everything in his path, enemies, scenery, mushroom friends.... :D

They should open up with bowser kidnapping the princess- only to get interupted by wario on a grander scale stealing some invaluable item from mushroom kingdom. Have Bowser posted up manning an item shop or some other insignificant role.

I don't think they should go back to what they did with Super Mario 64 and Sunshine, neither do I think they should stay on the very same ground they touched with Super Mario Galaxy. I hope they surprise us with a brand new take on the Mario platforming series.

There was a 3D Wario on the Virtual Boy. Wasn't too bad actually. Side scroller platformer with depth as well.

There never was much limitation in the Mushroom kingdom. I'd like a more traditional world, Galaxy worlds feel too limiting as they often feel quite small.

bring back the huge exploratory 3d worlds. i'm thinking they either go this route or something totally new and fresh, like a pikmin-influenced mario like that old 128 video.

the "mario in space" has succesfully run its course. best two video games of all time imo. only complaint is the lack of exploration/secrets due to the brilliant use of small planets and lack of back-tracking. it worked for mario in space, but i'd like to see a true Mario64 successor. No Mario on Isle Delphin, no Mario in Space, bring him back to the mushroom kingdom and fill it with hidden boxes, clouds, and pipes.

maybe i am crazing, but arent there open world levels in SMG1,2? Atleast when i play them there are. Mario has always been about taking what is best about the series and mixing it up. Maybe instead of making more SMG or Bros games, they should make a mario RPG or Paprer Mario. But im happy with SMG2 esp...it is one of the hardest games ive played ever, but some of the most fun at the same time. That is all i want out of more mario games, more levels.

That's exactly what they should not do IMO, and that is what made the Galaxy games so great. Mario games and platformers in general are linear in nature. There is a set goal, (usually going from point A to point B). It is just up to your abilities and skills to accomplish that goal. There should be no ambiguity and there is no need for exploration. There are many other game genres for those elements.

One question comes to mind.

The levels in Super Mario 64, were they actually in the mushroom kingdom? Or were the paintings under a spell making thier contents become new worlds?

Nah, like the level design, they can do whatever they want with Bowser, give him any abilities they would give Wario. It would just be a change of paint, so I would rather stick to the iconic villain. Also no Bowser, automatically rules out his kids, I am still waiting for their 3D Mario debut.

Totally agree. I loved both galaxy's and they were so awesome. I didn't feel like they were gimmicky, so I don't understand th gimmicks part. However, I do want to return to the castle and explore it again with new paintings. I have been wanting this for years.

I think Sepewrath and Madmangamer together pretty much nailed it. They could have put the "galaxies" in paintings in a castle and no one would know the difference. The Mushroom Kingdom is far from gone.
