If people think that the DSi will be the last DS model, we may be wrong if what Japanese newspaper Nikkei say turns out to be true.

According to NeoGAF, Nikkei had an article which states that the DSi model change will have larger screens (4"), but its price and functions will remain the same. It states that there is no word that this model will be released outside of Japan, but said that it is currently under discussion.

This new DSi model will be released in Japan latter this year according to Nikkei.

I agree with you but we still don't know as yet if it will be selling outside of Japan.

Nintendo have ZERO shame!!

The DSi has barely been out 6 months across the world, granted slightly longer in Japan, but ANOTHER DS update? Come on Nintendo!?

IMO, a bigger screen will just make the DS graphics go ugly due to their resolution.

I read that this is in response to some people wanting bigger screens because the current sizes are hard on the eyes for some adult gamers. Maybe it has nothing to do with the majority of people who already own a DSi.

I for one applaud something like this. I'm tired of having portability meaning that something has to fit into a matchbox. Portable dvd players are larger(and have bigger screens) and nobody complains about them not fitting in their pocket. I mean really, who carries a DS around in their front/back pocket anyways?

Yeah keyword handheld it should be able to fit in your pocket XD. I rather carry mine in a jacket pocket or case but sometimes I don't wanna carry a case so having it the small size that it is, is nice :)

Exactly, now I really don't if I should get a DSi in the future since they would make another one after that. :(

I guess they're trying to compete with Sony. Think of it, the PSP has 4 models so Nintendo most likely wants 4 models too.

I don't carry my DSi around... seriously, I don't feel like being one of those kids who sit in the corner at lunch playing their DS and Yu-Gi-Oh. So really, size isn't much of a problem for me.

One last thing: I WILL be applauding Nintendo, i'm sure. For all we know, GameSpot(EB Games) will have one of those deals like where you trade in your DS Lite, a game and $50 bucks and BOOM! Theres a new DSi. If they make it so you just pay like $20-$40, i'll be fine but no hell way am I gonna pay another $205 for the new thing. Seriously, I can't using anything but the new thing.

The DSI has slightly larger screens than the old DS but last time I checked DS games on the Dsi dont even fill up the screen completely!

Yeah I just checked again and DS games dont fill up the dsi's larger screen, what a jip!

Theres a black border around the screen where the games should expand to fit!

Say it ain't so Nintendo! It hasn't been that long since the launch of the original DSi, and I know they're not in it for the consumers, but to release a new DSi so close to the original DSi launch is just bad marketting and will leave a bad taste in many DSi consumers.

It's like I said before, the DSi was not a new handheld but simply a test unit that Nintendo sold to experiment

This too looks like an experiment to see if it's the size of the screen holding back Nintendo growth lately

In comparison to older PSP models its smaller but in comparison to a screen on the DSi its still larger.

The point is the DS has 2 screens! Individually they are smaller than the PSP but you can't really compare them because theres 2 on the DS!

If Ninty wants to experiment with larger screens for there next handheld (as jasonguy suggessted)and if they go with a large PSP like screen they might as well eliminate the dual screen as 2 giant screens like that is kinda to much!

I'm worried about the portability here! I like my handhelds small and compact!

Jaysonguy, how is it not a new handheld when it has new games, new features, a new input method for users (camera), new hardware that is used for said new user inputs, and new exclusive games that can not be played on the predecessor platform?

Has no one thought that with no Nintendo summit this year, and 65 days left in this year, that this isn't going to happen?

I mean, seriously release an update to the handheld with no press release, no announcement, etc with 60 days left in the shopping season?

Maybe it's supposed to be a smaller thing rathar than a whole new model. Sort of like how the PSP fixed up its D-Pad and some issues with its screen but never really sold the newer ones as a new PSP.

I was thinking its more of a Game Boy Light type of deal.

This new model isnt fixing problems as much as its just updating and improving on features.

In this case it sounds like the only thing its adding is the wide screen kinda like how the Game Boy Light only added a backlight.

That and the fact that the Game Boy Light never saw a release outside of Japan much as I expect this newer DS will never be released outside of Japan either!

I'm going to be a little disapponited if this gets released to the states. Nintendo just barely released the DSi, and now they might released a better version with bigger screens.

It is 3.25". The fact that the larger screen size will benefit older gamers shows how broad the demographics are for the DSi. Japan, like many developed countries have an aging populaton.

actually, it makes sense. i mean, it's not a new generation, it's an upgrade. nintendo's testing multimedia features on their handhelds to see if people approve. if we do, the "true" next handheld will have all that new crap from the DSi, but even better. if we dont, they just wont add it.

Depends on how things go. If nintendo treats the DSi like they did the Gameboy Color then it might as well be a new handheld. For now it could go either way.

well i consider the GBC the generation after the game boy. but i'm not sure the DSi has what it takes to stay a whole new generation. a better handheld with better hardware sounds more likely.

well DSiware already has plenty of A/AA games so its starting. And it is going to have exclusive games. I honestly see no reason why Nintendo would roll out DSi-only games in 2009/2010 if they're going to replace it soon. I'd say theres going to be a lot more DSi only games in 2010, and in 2012 we'll get a new handheld (as Nintendo will focus 2011 on Wii HD/2)

[QUOTE="forgot_it"]Depends on how things go. If nintendo treats the DSi like they did the Gameboy Color then it might as well be a new handheld. For now it could go either way.darth-pyschosis

well i consider the GBC the generation after the game boy. but i'm not sure the DSi has what it takes to stay a whole new generation. a better handheld with better hardware sounds more likely.

well DSiware already has plenty of A/AA games so its starting. And it is going to have exclusive games. I honestly see no reason why Nintendo would roll out DSi-only games in 2009/2010 if they're going to replace it soon. I'd say theres going to be a lot more DSi only games in 2010, and in 2012 we'll get a new handheld (as Nintendo will focus 2011 on Wii HD/2)

i'm not saying it's a bad thing, i'm just saying it's a test. if the DSiWare doesnt work, the next time they wont focus on it. they werent sure it would work, so a couple years before releasing the "new gen", they release the DSi. think of it as a different way of doing market research. and dont forget all the dates you just mentioned are pure speculation :P
