Nice, shame though, if it doesnt come out in japan until March/April 2011. That means a Sept-Nov, 2011 release for US most likely, cant wait for more details...

Not sure by what you mean is a new DS model, but is not the DS2.

From my understanding, this will be a new hand-held system that succeeds the DS. It will incorporate the graphics chip capable of producing graphics similar to the GameCube is what I heard. It is backward compatible and also has DS in its name, would you not call that the DS2?

3DS = DS2 in my opinion (as much the XBox360 = XBox 2)

i wouldnt take the GC level of graphics for granted..especially with this announcement. 3d demands alot from the hardware so devs will have to make sacrefices if the hardware is not significantly more powerful than a GC. i think, with this announcement, we can at least guess at the following: 1) it will be nvidia based. nvidia are the 3d specialists when it comes to consumer electronics. possibly ion based with extra 3d capabilities added on. 2) the 3DS will not work with GC games as some may have been hoping (completly different hardware obhiously) 3) it will be awsome :). as for DS BC...if its ion based then itll probably have the grunt to emulate the wii. whether ninty have it or not though is another matter.

Wow, now I wonder if it's still worth getting a DSi or if I should wait until this one comes out and just keep using my sister's Lite.

They have said that the "3DS" is likely to come anytime in Japan in the next 12 months, also with the possiblity of Motion Sensing like the iPhone...

They've also said that the 3DS is a temporary name, much like Revolution was the code name for the Wii.

If that's the case then this could really work. The current DS would struggle to render both a left and right image in most games, so unless they're using expensive headtracking, it wouldn't be very impressive performance and graphics wise. If it's going to be based on a brand new 'DS' with better hardware (which is supposed to be on the horizon anyway), then it could be fantastic. Glasses-free 3D tends to work quite well from what I've seen. But they shouldn't call it 'DS' anything. DS has basically become synonymous with 'another iteration of the original DS', and people don't see the Lite, DSi or DSXL as next gen consoles that they need to buy. The original DS is still the same technology effectively. It definitely needs a new name for the sake of sales.

If ya haven't learned tech gadgets, never buy the initial release---you are the guinea pigs. :) I'll wait another year 2012 for the 3DSi or whatever they'll end up calling it when it's slimmer and better handling. :)

If the 3D worked like it does in this vid, I dont think there would be that much of a dip in performance.

ya i usually like the slim version so im guessing april 2013 for that lol. well they just put a end to ds sales i guess. now with that announcement most people are gonna wait. i dunno i will see if i like the look and feel of this one i will pick it up. hopefully the price isnt too much i would like it around 150 :S. it will probably be able to pull off a little better graphics than the current psp with the 3D going on. which isnt a bad thing i welcome anything nintendo will bring us :D

Its funny how the rumour mill has been going on and on and no one anticipated this. Its just like Nintendo to totally come out of the blue and "WOW" us like this. Kudos to them for the amazing people that they are. Day One buy for me.

Hmm.. I mentioned head tracking but thought it wasn't as good as this yet on inexpensive hardware. In order to get a true impression of depth however they might need 2 cameras, perhaps infra red ones so light levels aren't an issue. So it's either going to use screens which output left eye images and right eye images using similar technology to those 3D posters or stickers you can find (I think Fuji's 3D digital camera has a screen like that), or more probably it's going to have 2 front cameras. My vote is for cameras; if it is, the 3D effect could be stunning.

It's also possible that, instead of using cameras and motion senstions, they could have special screens as well. Though considering that it might have motion sensors....

I understand that the graphics will improve. Rumour has it the next DS will use the Nvidia Tegra 2 chip: Tegra 2 confirmed for next gen DS say sourcesTegra 2 officially launched Here it is in action: Youtube And if this 3DS is the next gen DS, then it looks like it should cope just fine if using this chip.

If you read the actual Nintendo announcement, Iwata clearly says its the SUCCESOR to the DSi, aka the DS2.

Anyways, I think when they say "3D without glasses" they are meaning something like this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWAg1s7xfz0

But it is the DS2. It is the successor of the DS name, and it will be backwards compatible with all DS/DSi software. :/

I find it funny that this was a rumour back in 2004 and gamespot totally called it bunk claiming that the 3D mixed with the dual screen would be to confusing for gamers to play comfortably.

I wonder if games are required to use 3d and if not they could push the visuals even harder.

Also PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep the D-pad somewhere on the handheld. Preferably under the analog stick. Platformers and FPS will greatly benefit from the D-pad.

I really don't know what to make of this. I am not a fan of the whole 3D thing with movies and TV going down the route. Of course it would hit gaming eventually and well I am glad Nintendo are going there first. I am interested to see what it has to offer. It was a totally "wow" annoncement though. Look forward to seeing more.

True, the PSP control scheme has been its biggest drawback. But still a D-pad right under a clever analog would be amazing for so many games. FPS on DS struggle because either your right or left hand is completely dedicated to the stylus, so some more buttons on the left side of the controller would be a game changer. I expect a very awesome Metroid Prime game from this new DS.

the problem being that the DS would lose its "can be held either way", unless they added a second analog on the other side... which would be awesome (as long as both analogs are decent)

If they had a dual analog, D-pad, rumble, stylus, and improved touch screen that would be awesome. So ideal for the gamer as long as it does not become too complicated for mainstream audiences.

so many options to design a game only means it gets easier to learn and play :P only question is... wouldn't rumble get in the way of accurate touch controls?

Have a hard time reading there bud? I'm pretty sure the DS cant handle GC-like graphics, let alone 3D immersion. :|

And don't even get me started on the improved wireless capabilities, extended battery life, etc.

Nintendo must have been forced to make this announcement though, because honestly from a buisness prospective...announcing the DS' succesor before the new model (DSi XL) is even available in all territories is retarded.

Something must have been leaked and Nintendo must have tried to beat future rumours to the punch or something because there is going to be alot of people rethinking their preorders with the promise of a new system on the horizon.

I can't see DSi XL sales being all that fantastic after this announcement

Well said. I wonder what could have happened. This really would have blown people away at E3, but now the wow factor is going to be gone (Unless they have an awesome tech demo).

The first thought that I had when I read the intial article was "3D is awful This is going to flop." Then I saw this video and my mind was blown. Now I am excited. This could be real good.
