I just heard that Nintendo is coming out with the nIntendo 3DS on March 27 this year and im angry. Does this mean that they are going to completely abandon the DS??? Cause I actually hate the idea Of the Nintendo 3DS and DSi. It seems every system these days has to have internet and a camera!!!!! Also the Nintendo 3DS has less battery than the original huge Nintendo DS and the DSi has less than the DS lite + no GBA Cartridge!!!!!!!!! I just wish Nintendo didn't abandon their systems completely after they make a new one... Main Question: DO you think The Nintendo 3DS will be a killed system (aka the system will die out in popularity)- even though i know that answer i wanna here your opinion. =D

I think I remember it being said that Nintendo will still sell DS games for a while, even after the 3DS is released.

The DSi, DS Lite, DS, etc were all part of the same line of gaming systems. The original DS was basically minorly upgraded a bunch of times, with additional features added (and the gba slot removed), which naturally doesn't add that much in the big picture. I think the later the remake of a system is released, the less likely it is to gain popularity and the shorter lifespan it has amongst general audiences. The 3DS, on the other hand, is like the DS, because it's the first model of the next generation handheld for Nintendo. It should sell like crazy, like all new generation gaming systems do. I'm sure they'll have some eventual remakes, like the 3DS Lite, 3DSi, etc (they'll likely be called something else) as minor features and upgrades (like improved battery life) are added to the base 3DS design.

Just to note: Nintendo did say they would continue to support the DS. There's some great games coming up still for it, so I'm sure the DS generation as a whole has at least another year to year and a half left in its lifespan.

Nintendo typically supports their handhelds a few months after a new one comes out. I would wager that they'll continue this trend, but don't expect to see new DS games after a year from the release of the 3DS. Nintendo will be putting most of the support towards their new handheld.

I don't really understand your problem here. You hate the idea of a new DS with better graphics and new ways to play the games? It's been almost seven years since the original DS released, it's time for something new. The 3DS is far more than just a handheld with cameras and internet.

Nintendo won't stop making DS games right away, same way they didn't stop making Gameboy Advance games when they released the DS. That's not something you have to worry about for a while, but, really, it's run it's course. If all you're interested in is better battery life and a GBA slot, just hang on to your DS lite.

It's going to be a very popular handheld, I can't see it dying out anytime soon.

The support (as in new games) for DS will no doubt dwindle pretty fast as most developers developing for the DS have likely already moved most of their DS resources over towards development for the new console, the 3DS. An occasional DS game here and there is bound to be released after the release of 3DS, but probably no big name games.

As others have said the DS came out in 2004 its been around for plenty of time. There are already a ton of great games for it you can enjoy and probably a few more coming.

they said that with the gamecube but they never did ... anyway given how many ds' have been sold to date nintendo and other devs will continue to make games for it for a while but the bulk of the effort will go towards the new platform

What are you talking about? Abandon the DS? Nintendo has given it solid support for 7-years, and it's time to move on.

Its no one's fault but you're own for buying a 6 year old console and not knowing about a new generation product revealed 11 months ago.

The DS Lite even came out in 2006, so no they aren't "abandoning" anything. They gave us 6 great DS years, you just happen to be late to the party.

But just don't buy a 3DS, the DS has a great library that will take you years to complete, and after that likely the next next generation will be upon us

All of the above As for the 3DS losing popularity, I don't think so. I actually think it has a chance of out performing the DS, the average consumer will be wowed by the 3D, and most people have enjoyed the DS and will buy the 3DS. 6-7 years is a respectable amount of time, and with games like pokemon black coming out soon, and golden sun releasing a couple months back. The DS is going out on a high.

I don't think the 3DS will be as popular as the DS at the start due to it's high price point and that 3D is still newish but as 3D becomes more popular and cheaper resulting in a lower price I think it has the potential to out perform the DS
