This thread smells of bad karma... Maybe they're getting lazy, maybe they aren't. Does it really matter? Hardcore gamers complaining about lack of quality software is getting very old. All the options are available to you. Just because you can't decide what to do with your time and money, with respect to gaming, doesn't mean you need to clutter this forum with your negative energy.

Well, who could blame them?

Games that take tons of time, money, and effort to develop (Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3) sold squat.

But, glorified tech demos bundled with some gimicky hardware (Wii Play, Wii Fit, and pretty soon Wii Sports Resort) flies off the shelf.

So, what does that tell Nintendo? They can make more money by doing a lot less, so why bother making those longer "hardcore" games.

-----

One thing that's really making me worry, Wii Sports Resort is no longer a first half game (See Nintendo's official release schedule). They said last year that it is coming out early 2009, but that is no longer the case. What does this mean? If Nintendo is positioning Wii Sports Resort to be 2009's holiday game, just like what they did for Wii Music for 2008, I wouild be royally pissed.

Why bother making any games? Indeed, games they released two years ago even are still topping the charts every month. Makes a whole lotta sense to not spend the money you're raking in. The only reason most people work is to make money, so if you don't need to make any, then why work?

Of course their employees are still working... on creating non-game architecture, like the DSI, the DSI online store, Wii 2, and non-game software, like the sound and photo manipulation programs on the DSi.

There's no pressing need to release Wii Sports Resort soon, so it's okay to slack off on that and let the date get pushed back. Why compete with themselves for the top spot? They'd be cannibalizing their sales.

In some ways, I'm really liking this development. I always found Ninty fanboys incredibly annoying. You know, the ones who think that Nintendo is better than any other developer ever. Maybe now they'll be forced to play other games and find out that there are a number that are superior.

This is what Nintendo is trying to do, make the Wii to get a more gamers who never played games before, then port their old game to the wii so that these new gamers can buy it. yup. Makes new gamers happy, makes the rest mad at Nintendo for not bringing new games.

That's not going to happen. Nintendo's aiming to release motion+ alongside Wii Sports Resort, and it's confirmed that both Tiger Woods and EA Tennis are going to use motion+. Those titles ship mid-summer.

That makes two of us. With all the 1st party software nicely spread out, people can try something else. All the ones complaining about Ninty not releasing their flagship titles faster need to try other games before complaining. There are at least 20-30 good games on this system. If the people that are whining have not tried them all, then it's time they do. Myopic gamers are becoming annoying.

You say you want games, yet you refuse to buy them or try new ones!

You brought up a good point. I can already see Nintendo shifting its primary focus from games to hardware. Gone are the days of epic games from Nintendo. I can only see them iterating on Zelda and Mario every 2-3 years or so...that it. I don't see them making any other in-depth games to satisfy the hardcore.

Sadly, the real money is now in the hardware and peripherals. Change the color of the DS and people buy them again in droves. I'm pretty sure the DSi will be a massive hit in North America. Bundle a hardware peripheral with a barebone mini-game collection and....VOILA! An instant hit! Just imagine how much money Nintendo are making. The development cost of Wii Sports, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Wii Music, Link's Crossbow Training, and Wii Sports Resort COMBINED doesn't even come close to the budget and time needed to create a Zelda game. All these plastic peripherals (Wii Wheel, Wii Zapper, and Classic Controller) cost them less than a dollar to make and they are selling them for 10-20 bucks a pop.

I hate the direction they are going but I cannot blame them.

Why are you under the impression that two of the easiest games franchises ever created are for the "hardcore"?

Because they have the depth and length that "hardcore" gamers are craving for.

Yet they are accessible, simple, and immediately gratifying.

Its not laziness its good business, it may not be the most beneficial business to us coming from the GC era, but its good none the less. Instead of coming out with Pikmin 3 right away they release Plkmin 1 & 2 to introduce the series to newcomers. This in turn bolsters the available audience for Pikimin 3 which equates to more sales. The same could be said for the the first two Primes, MP3 didn't sell through the roof, but mabye sales for that would pick up if people had the entire series available on one format.

Already debunked this long ago

First party games sell better on the Wii. Metroid 3 will surpass the numbers of 1 and 2 combined by the end of the year and it hasn't even been out for a year in all regions

What they're doing still isn't lazy though. It's smart. They are already extremely rich and their games are selling like crazy so there's no need for them to go into a mad rush to release a bunch of games right now. I for one rather like that Nintendo doesn't have anything huge announced because it encourages third-parties to make good games because they don't thin they'll have a Nintendo game to compete with for a while.

Right because we all know of your ageless wisdom, and excellent analytical abilities. I'll stick with my reasoning because MP3 was one of the big three but did not sell like the other two. And its not that hard to top the sells of games on the GC, Nintendo is simply breathing life into the series by making the whole trilogy available without having to worry about getting GC controllers or memory cards.

Well I found your problem

Metroid is not one of Nintendo's big titles. It's a third tier franchise that's only popular in 2 out of the three major regions. Japan has given up on it because it's the first person shooter. That's why over half a year passed before it came to Japan.

They need a GOOD Zelda, not a crappy gamecube port that should've stayed on the gamecube.

They tried too hard to make it like Ocarina and that only served to make it uninteresting.

I agree. That was made very clear at e3 2008. they didn't make 1 announcement of a major game. hen they skimped out las holiday, with just 2 games, neither one of which was a heavey hitter, And sojjme people will argue that wii music isn't really a game at all. And now ports of gamecube games, even though they are already prefectly playable on the wii?

They need to step up their game.

I heard somewhere that the wii-makes are only taking up a minimal amount of Nintendo's resources. So, it's not like nintendo is just working on the wii makes, I'm sure something else is in the works, Also, nintendo is delivering motion plus this year, which sounds really cool as well. Hopefully it will deliver as promised, which would be fantastic.

yeah i definently think nintendo is getting lazy. They say games like zelda and mario are in production but yet they wont show us anything. Instead of bringing over ports from the cube we should get some actual wii games. Nintendo should be making games likeStarfox, Luigi' MansionFzero, Zelda and a new Donkey Kong Platformer like the 64 had. I dont think we need a new mario until the next system. I figure though nintendo has alot of these game ready(or close to ready)and is just waiting for sales of the wii to go down then BAM release them and continue to get record sales.

Nintendo isn't getting lazy, the fans are just getting uninformed.

Let's take a look:

Brand New Wii Games In 09:

  • Punch-Out!!
  • Wii Sports Resort
  • Sin and Punishment 2
  • Excitebots
  • Kensax
  • Another Code
  • Endless Ocean 2(Forever Blue 2)
  • Line Attack Heroes
  • Cosmic Walker
  • Spawn Smasher
  • Dynamic Slash
  • Tact of Magic
  • Kirby(Nintendo insists that it exists, so I shall believe them)

That's 13, not including any Wiimakes or Fatal Frame, Disaster, Captain Rainbow and whatever else America hasn't gotten yet.
That doesn't include WiiWare(which Nintendo has been supporting with a nice sprinkling of games), DSIWare(Which has needed a lot of attention to get off the ground in the first place) or DS games(remember Nintendo does develop for 2 systems).

Then we have the 7 Wiimakes(which don't take squat to produce), the inevitable Zelda, Mario and Pikmin 3 games(they don't just appear overnight, Nintendo is working on them right now).
And also don't forget the hardware for the DSI(and DSIWare), new channels(well, Japan gets them), the planning for the next Wii/DS, Wii MotionPlus...and who knows what else(c*lassic controller is getting a slight redo in Japan, that takes effort).

See all that? That's a mighty good plate for a company like Nintendo to be carrying, and don't forget that they have MORE then this in the works at this very moment. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't their.

Yeah its not as big in Japan, but it was hyped here as one of the big three. I'm not referring to the Japanese market I am talking about what they are doing here in the states. They are trying to push the series as a whole, but I'm curious what is your reasoning?

Nintendo is coming so lazy, and watch out this http://wii.ign.com/articles/957/957284p1.html its about the "new control" metroid prime and metroid prime 2, as another person said, nintendo should make aaccessory which we can use the wiimote on this, that will be great, better that buy a console and use the same old games of the NGC
