wow, i have to admire ur guts about ur honesty...
mentioning ur curiosity about playing pirated games here, ready to be burned?Â
Ahem there is a thing called a free loader in which you just load a damn disc you know. Also most titles these days that are announced are ported over.
Btw people publishers are the ones who want region locking in consoles. xbox 360 publishers can put region locking on their games.
Sony PS3 may have lost considerable publisher support by making the PS3 region locked.
Nintendo was going to do the region free for the console but wanted strong publisher support so that had to go.
Game publishers who only publish a game in one region such as Europe who have to wait six months to a year for release due to localizing issues due to all the funky languages in Euro land want the region locking. This is because when people can import the game it can kill 50% of the future sales of the game since most of the importing occurs among English speaking gamers. So blame the other languages in Europe who **** about not having a game released over there with their peculiuar tongues on it. Looking at you France and Germany. Also the damn Dutch.

I know there's freeloader I have one for Gamecube which only works on Wii if I force it. For the price of a Wii compatible version you're better off getting a mod chip with the additional functions and true region free boot up. Everything should be released simultaneously for every region in this century anyway.

YeahÂ
I second that.

I'm not suprised. They don't want to lose money thats all. Its the same as it always was except now theres a law against it in Europe. Mod chips have always voided your warranty...whats new? So if you're planning on Modding your Wii if it breaks you have to buy a new one.Â
You have no idea how game releases occur do you?
There are ratings boards in each country. Some will refuse a game to be published there so sometimes a game has to be altered to be allowed to be sold. Command and Conquer games for instance in Germany have several alterations not found in other countries. To put in alterations or find out if they are needed can take months.
There are issues with the publishing aspect besides that namely who gets the job. Each country has different rules/regulations which is why one publisher doesn't publish in all regions. Nintendo for example will publish Square-Enix games in the states for the DS but Square-Enix handles it for the PS2 in the US.
Not every publisher has offices in each country that a game could be released. Legal staff alone to handle a release in all regions at once would be enourmous talking thousands of the apporiate legal staff. What company has that many lawyers decidated to one single issue at a time?
Once again the subject of alterations comes up. Since each language would have to be done along with the changes needed due to cultural differances each language the game is released requires a team of 20 or more people. Sometimes four can do it. You are talking dozens of languages meaning dozens of teams for one game that will take weeks or months. What company can devote that many people to one game release at a time?
If games were to be released in all regions with the apporaite languages/alterations due to secure release, accurate translation you would see game publishing slow down to one or two games a month worldwide at most.
Bother to learn how things work in the real world rather then the make believe fantasy you adhere to for some unfathomable reason.
Its not illegal where i live and i doubt nintendo will cripple machines that can boot blank media.
that said, there are so few games that i will buy for my wii (ie NIntendo games released once a generation) that
i would even consider it a worthwhile option.Â

I know how the system works I'm saying in the principle of the thing simultaneous releases should be the way forward. The games industry makes a lot of money I'm sure publishers should could manage those resources efficiently enough, except the small time guys. Then maybe people wouldn't import games which belittle's their delayed efforts to make their products available to a worldwide audience.
Personally, I think getting a mod chip is kinda stupid (no offense to anyone here who disagrees). With Nintendo's Wii update, it only take a firmware update from Nintendo to render such a chip useless. Worst case, it could render your Wii useless too. Just my 2 cents on this topic...pattrojan

So mod the Wii and forget about the online aspect of the console. I think it's worth it since Nintendo online will suck anyway.Â
http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2007/04/24/nintendo-warns-against-the-use-of-mod-chipscleary666Good for them. Why mod? it's cheap and cheating.

''mod chips are bad mmmkay''
O Rly Nintendo????
Still might get one anyway, you don't go about installing such things without already knowing exactly what your doing. I only want one for getting rid of the blasted region lock and finally playing some DVD's.

Â
I agree with you...but i think the mod chip is also good to battle the rediculous over pricing of VC games...because i can get them for like 2 megs a game...burn them to disc and play them on my Wii with an emulator....not only that but i can play ANY game.Â
Are there chips to make the wii play DVD's?''mod chips are bad mmmkay''

Sorry, but sony have already done that with the psp. My psp was a v1.5, i bought burnout legends, wouldn't run until i installed firmware v1.51. GTA:LCS Wouldn't run on a psp that was running a firmware version below 2.0.
They keep updating their firmware on the psp so users can't run games from the memory stick.
So forcing firmware updates to play certain games is very possible, as in if a game needed access to a external hard drive, the wii would need an update before that game could be run.

Umm, no. SPM has an update feature on the disc. No one said you needed to connect to the internet to update the software, you simply put it in your game disc. In order to use this game you need to update your software to what's also on the game disc.

There's so much misinformation in this thread it's unbelievable. Most of the points have fortunately been corrected. To the guy thinking of modding his Wii to play foreign games, that's not a good idea. From what I've heard, people who modded their PAL Wiis to play Super Paper Mario ended up having the update that comes with it brick their Wii.
With regards to firmware updates bricking or disabling modchip'd Wiis, that's unlikely due to the nature of the modchips (if we disregard the fact that most come with a stealth mode). I'm not going to go into details here because I have a feeling I'm already on the very edge of what the TOS allows.
To those talking about hoping that it won't allow burnt games online, there are people who use mod chips to actually play backups to avoid scratching their actual discs - or so they claim. ;)
Also, regarding the PSP homebrew scene, while initially Sony was winning with the constant firmware updates, it seems they've been completely outdone by the community at this point.
